Most problems with rental cars in Rwanda are avoidable. They usually come from a rushed booking, a skipped inspection or a wrong assumption about the roads. Below are the most common car rental Rwanda mistakes we see travellers make, and the simple fixes that keep your trip on track.
Booking Stage: Car Rental Rwanda Mistakes to Avoid
1. Choosing the car on price alone
A small sedan looks like a bargain until you reach the muddy track to a lodge. Then you’re stuck, late or forced to turn back. Instead, match the vehicle to the roughest road on your route, not the smoothest. For park trips, that usually means a Prado or Land Cruiser.
2. Booking too late
Land Cruisers, rooftop-tent cars and vans are limited. In the busy months of June–September and December–February, they go weeks ahead. So book as soon as your dates and permits are confirmed.
3. Paying unverified sellers
Scams do happen, usually through social media ads or unsolicited messages. Only pay a company you can verify, with a real office, a working phone line and a written contract. Never send money to a personal account because someone “has a car available”.
4. Not reading the terms

Paperwork and Permit Mistakes
5. Forgetting the International Driving Permit
If your licence isn’t in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit. Even if it is, an IDP makes police checks smoother.
6. Driving across a border without clearance

7. Leaving gorilla permits to the last minute
Permits cost US$1,500 and sell out in peak months. Book them first, then build your car hire around the trek date.
Pickup Day Errors
8. Skipping the inspection
This is the classic mistake. Walk around the car with the agent and photograph every scratch and dent. Also check tyres, the spare, the jack and the warning triangles. Five minutes now prevents disputes at return.
9. Not learning the 4WD controls
Many visitors have never used low range. Ask for a demo at handover, and try engaging 4WD before you need it on a muddy hill.
10. Collecting the car after a night flight
Driving out of the airport exhausted, in the dark, on unfamiliar roads is risky. Instead, take an airport transfer to your hotel and collect the car the next morning.
On-the-Road Car Rental Rwanda Mistakes
11. Underestimating drive times
Distances look short, but hills slow everything down. Realistic times from Kigali are 2–2.5 hours to Musanze, about 2.5 hours to Akagera’s gate, 3–3.5 hours to Rubavu and 5–6 hours to Nyungwe. Don’t plan a gorilla trek the morning after a late Nyungwe departure.
12. Driving after dark
Rural roads are unlit, and pedestrians, cyclists and livestock use them at night. Plan to arrive before sunset, around 18:00 year-round.
13. Ignoring speed cameras
Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common, including in small towns. Fines add up quickly, so watch the limits.
14. Letting the tank run low
Fuel stations are plentiful in towns but scarce near the parks. Fill up whenever you’re below half a tank on long legs.
15. Forgetting Umuganda
On the last Saturday morning of each month, many roads close for community work until about midday. Plan a relaxed morning instead of a long drive.
Season and Vehicle Mismatches
A trip that works in July can fail in April. During the rains (March–May and October–December), murram roads turn slick and deep ruts form. Travellers who booked a RAV4 for a rainy-season Akagera trip often regret it.

Packing and Planning Gaps
16. No offline maps
Mobile signal is good on main roads but patchy in Nyungwe and parts of Akagera. Download offline maps before you leave Kigali, and keep a printed copy of key bookings.
17. Overpacking the itinerary

18. Not carrying cash
Cards work in Kigali, but rural shops and some fuel stations prefer cash. Keep some Rwandan francs for small purchases and emergencies.
Return Day Slip-Ups
19. Returning with less fuel
Most rentals are full-to-full. Refuelling charges at return usually cost more than filling up yourself.
20. Running late for your flight
Allow time for the return inspection and traffic to the airport. Kigali’s evening rush can add 20 minutes or more.
21. Not getting a signed return note
Ask the agent to confirm the car’s condition and fuel in writing. Then keep your photos until the deposit is back.

How do I know a rental company is genuine?
Check for a real address, a consistent phone number and email, a written contract and payment through official channels.
Is a RAV4 ever enough for national parks?
In the dry season on main park roads, sometimes. In the rains, or for Volcanoes trailheads, choose a Land Cruiser or Prado.
What should I do if I get a speeding fine?
