KGL airport car collection works best when you know exactly what happens between the aircraft door and the driver’s seat. Kigali International Airport is compact and well organised, so the whole handover can be quick. This guide walks you through each stage of collecting a rental vehicle at the terminal, from the week before you fly to your first kilometres on Rwandan roads.
Before You Fly: Setting Up Your KGL Airport Car Collection
Most handover delays start with missing information, not at the airport itself. So a few minutes of preparation at home pays off later.
Send your flight details
Share your flight number, not just the arrival time. That way, we can track delays and adjust the handover without you needing to call from the baggage hall.
Confirm the paperwork you need
Pack these in your hand luggage, not your checked bag:
- Your passport
- A valid driving licence for every person who will drive
- An International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English or French
- The card used for the booking, if a deposit applies
Agree the extras in advance
Child seats, a cool box, camping gear or a rooftop tent should be fitted before the car reaches the terminal. Adding them on the spot takes time and may not be possible late at night.
Landing at Kigali International Airport
KGL sits in Kanombe, east of central Kigali. After you land, you pass immigration, collect bags and clear customs. Rwanda issues visas on arrival to many nationalities, but check your own status before travel.
Rwanda also bans single-use plastic bags. Customs may remove them from your luggage, so pack with reusable bags instead.
Finding your handover agent
Once you walk into the public arrivals area, look for our agent holding a sign with your name. If you cannot see them, message us on WhatsApp rather than leaving the terminal. The arrivals hall is small, so meeting up rarely takes long.

The Handover in the Car Park
The agent walks you to the vehicle in the airport car park. The handover itself usually takes 15–20 minutes. Do not rush it, even if you are tired.
Paperwork
You will sign the rental agreement and receive copies of the insurance and vehicle documents. Keep these in the glovebox, because police checkpoints may ask for them. Also check that every driver’s name is on the contract.
Walk-around inspection
Go around the car with the agent and note existing marks on the checkout sheet. In addition, take your own photos or a short video. Pay attention to:
- Body panels and bumpers
- Windscreen chips
- Tyre condition, including the spare
- Fuel level and mileage on the dashboard
- Jack, wheel spanner and warning triangle
Vehicle briefing
Ask the agent to show you how to engage 4WD and low range. On a Land Cruiser or Prado, this matters on trailhead roads near Volcanoes. Also ask about the fuel type, since mixing up diesel and petrol is costly.
Your First Drive Out of Kanombe
Rwanda drives on the right. If you come from the UK, Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania, give yourself a few quiet minutes in the car park to adjust. Then follow the airport road toward the city.
Traffic around Kigali is orderly, but motorcycle taxis weave between cars. Keep a steady speed and check mirrors often. Speed cameras are common, and limits are strictly enforced.
Typical first legs from KGL
| Destination | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Central Kigali hotels | 20–30 minutes |
| Akagera main gate | About 2.5 hours |
| Musanze / Volcanoes | 2–2.5 hours |
| Rubavu on Lake Kivu | 3–3.5 hours |
If you land after mid-afternoon, stay in Kigali for the first night. Mountain roads are easier and safer in daylight. Our self drive Rwanda page has more road tips for first-timers.
Practical Errands Near the Airport
Before heading out of the city, tick off a few essentials. They make the rest of the trip easier.
- SIM card: buy a local data SIM in the arrivals hall or in town for maps and WhatsApp.
- Cash: withdraw Rwandan francs for park fees, fuel and small purchases upcountry.
- Fuel: fill up in Kigali before long drives, as stations thin out in some areas.
- Water and snacks: stock up for the road, especially for Nyungwe, which is 5–6 hours away.
Common KGL Airport Car Collection Mistakes
We see the same small slips again and again. Luckily, each one is easy to avoid.
- Packing the licence in checked luggage. If your bag is delayed, you cannot sign for the car.
- Skipping the spare tyre check. A flat spare is useless on a remote park road.
- Leaving the terminal to search for the agent. Stay inside arrivals and message us instead.
- Driving straight to Nyungwe after a night flight. Fatigue and winding hills are a poor mix.
Returning the Car at KGL
Dropping the car at the terminal on your last day is just as simple. Agree a return time about three hours before your international departure. The agent checks the car against the original sheet, confirms fuel, and you walk straight into departures.
If you would rather not drive on your final day, you can switch to one of our Kigali airport transfers instead. You can also see the full range of vehicles in our car rental fleet before you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my flight is delayed by several hours?
Because we track your flight number, the agent adjusts to the new time. There is no need to rebook.
Can someone else collect the car for me at KGL?
Only a person named on the contract with their licence can sign and drive. Add them before arrival.
Is there parking for the handover right outside the terminal?
Yes. Handovers take place in the airport car park, a short walk from arrivals.
Can I collect at KGL and return in Kigali city?
Yes. Let us know your preferred return point when booking, and we will arrange it.
