5 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari
Five days is the sweet spot for a Rwanda-only gorilla safari: enough time for the trek itself, a genuine buffer day in case weather or trail conditions shift the schedule, and room left over for golden monkeys and a stretch of downtime on Lake Kivu, without the commitment of crossing into Uganda or covering a longer multi-country circuit. This itinerary keeps the whole trip inside Rwanda, reachable in a single self-drive 4×4 from Kigali, and built around one gorilla trek rather than the two-country, two-permit version of this trip. It suits travelers who want the full Volcanoes National Park experience without extending the trip into a longer safari.
Full Itinerary
Land at Kigali International Airport, where your 4x4 is ready along with a full handover briefing covering the route, vehicle features, and what to expect on Rwanda's roads. Spend the afternoon in Kigali itself the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Kimironko Market are both worth the time before an early night ahead of tomorrow's drive north.
A scenic two-hour drive on the RN4 brings you to Musanze, gateway to Volcanoes National Park and the Virunga volcanoes. In the afternoon, visit the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village for traditional dance and a look at pre-colonial Rwandan homestead life, or head instead to Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo for quieter scenery. Overnight in Musanze, ready for an early start tomorrow.
An early briefing at Kinigi park headquarters is followed by a trek through bamboo and rainforest slopes to spend an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family — the centerpiece of this trip and, for most travelers, one of the more extraordinary wildlife encounters available anywhere. Afternoon and evening are free to rest at your lodge.
A shorter, lower-cost trek into the park's bamboo zone brings you face to face with Volcanoes National Park's habituated golden monkeys, considerably more energetic and faster-moving than their gorilla neighbors. By midday, drive roughly ninety minutes to Lake Kivu, where the rest of the day is yours a boat ride, a lakeside walk, or simply watching the water from Rubavu's shoreline.
A relaxed morning by the lake before the two-and-a-half to three-hour drive back to Kigali. Return your vehicle and transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, closing out a five-day trip that pairs Rwanda's signature wildlife experience with genuine time to unwind.
