Volcanoes safari car hire gives you a simple way to reach Rwanda’s gorillas on your own schedule. You collect a 4×4 in Kigali, drive north for two to two and a half hours, and arrive in Musanze ready for the trek. This guide covers the route, the vehicle, trekking-day logistics and what else to see in the Virunga foothills.
Why Drive Yourself to Volcanoes National Park?
Volcanoes National Park sits on Rwanda’s north-west border with Uganda and DR Congo. It is home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and the Dian Fossey research site. Because it is close to Kigali, many travellers visit without joining a group tour.
A self-drive trip lets you leave when you want, stop at viewpoints on the way, and pick your own lodge. You can also stay an extra day in Musanze if the weather or your energy calls for it. For a full overview of the park, see our Volcanoes National Park page.

The Kigali to Musanze Drive
The road from Kigali to Musanze is paved the whole way. It climbs through terraced hills, tea plots and small trading centres, so expect many bends and slow trucks. Allow two to two and a half hours, plus time for photo stops.
Tips for the road north
- Leave Kigali after the morning rush, around 9 am, for an easier exit from the city.
- Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common. Stick to posted limits.
- Watch for cyclists carrying heavy loads on downhill stretches.
- Fill up in Kigali or Musanze; fuel stations are scarce near the park lodges.
- Arrive before dark. Lodge access roads near Kinigi can be rough and unlit.
Choosing a Vehicle for Volcanoes Safari Car Hire
The main road is smooth, but the last stretch to trailheads is not. On trek mornings, you drive from the Kinigi park headquarters to a starting point that may be 30 minutes or more away. Those tracks are stony, steep and often muddy.
Land Cruiser Prado or TXL
A Land Cruiser Prado is a strong all-round choice for two to four people. It has proper four-wheel drive, good clearance and a comfortable cabin for the drive from Kigali.
Safari Land Cruiser
Choose the safari model if you will continue to Akagera or into Uganda. Its pop-up roof is ideal for game drives, and it carries more luggage.
Toyota RAV4
A RAV4 handles the tarmac well and costs less to run. However, in the wet months it can struggle on the trailhead tracks. If you pick one, consider a local driver for trekking morning.
Rooftop tent vehicle
Some travellers camp at community campsites around Musanze. A rooftop tent 4×4 saves on lodge costs, but nights at this altitude are cold, so pack warm layers.
Gorilla Trekking Day Logistics
Trekking day starts early. You must report to the park headquarters at Kinigi by about 7 am for briefing and group allocation. From most Musanze hotels, that drive takes 20 to 40 minutes.
Permits
A Rwanda gorilla permit costs US$1,500 per person. Permits are limited and sell out months ahead in June to September and December. Book the permit first, then build your car rental around that date.
Driving to the trailhead
After briefing, your group drives to its trailhead. Rangers ride with some groups, and the roads can be narrow and slippery. If you are not comfortable on such tracks, a car hire with driver for that day removes the stress.
What to bring in the car
- Waterproof jacket, gloves and long trousers.
- Sturdy boots and a spare pair of socks.
- Packed lunch and at least two litres of water.
- A dry bag for camera gear and a change of clothes for the drive back.
Treks last from one to several hours each way. You spend one hour with the gorillas once you find them.
More to Do Around the Virungas
With your own vehicle, it is easy to add activities before or after the gorilla trek. Each one is a short drive from Musanze.
- Golden monkey trekking: a shorter, gentler trek in the bamboo zone.
- Dian Fossey tomb hike: a steep climb to the researcher’s former camp at Karisoke.
- Mount Bisoke: a full-day hike to a crater lake on the volcano summit.
- Iby’iwacu Cultural Village: dance, crafts and community life near the park edge.
- Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo: a quiet scenic drive or boat outing east of Musanze.
If you visit in September, check the date of Kwita Izina, the annual gorilla naming ceremony held near the park. For help timing your visit, read this guide on the best time for gorilla trekking.
Extending the Trip Beyond Musanze
From Musanze, Lake Kivu at Rubavu is only about an hour and a half away. So many self-drivers continue west for a few days of rest by the water. From there, you can follow the lakeshore south towards Nyungwe for chimpanzees.
Alternatively, the Cyanika border is close to Musanze. With the right documents, you can cross into Uganda for Mgahinga or Bwindi. Remember that Uganda drives on the left. Our cross-border car hire page explains the paperwork.

Volcanoes Trip FAQ
Can I do Volcanoes as a day trip from Kigali?
Yes, but it means leaving Kigali around 4:30 am to reach Kinigi by 7 am. Most travellers find a night in Musanze far more relaxing.
Is the road to the gorilla trailheads paved?
No. The main highway is paved, but trailhead roads are dirt and stone. A 4×4 with good clearance is the safest choice, especially from March to May.
Where do I park while I trek?
You leave the car at the trailhead parking area. Local guards often watch vehicles, and a small tip is appreciated. Keep valuables out of sight.
Do I need a guide in the car?
Not for the drive itself. However, the park assigns a ranger-guide for the trek, so you only need your permit and passport.
