Most international visitors fly into Kigali with one goal: an hour with the mountain gorillas near Musanze. Getting your Musanze gorilla safari transport right means reaching the Kinigi briefing on time, in a vehicle that copes with the last stretch to the trailhead. This guide explains your options, the route and a realistic timeline for trek day.

From the Airport to Musanze: The Route
Musanze is the gateway town for Volcanoes National Park. The drive from Kigali takes about 2–2.5 hours on a paved, winding road through the hills. You climb north, pass terraced farms and get your first view of the Virunga volcanoes near the end.
From Musanze town, the park headquarters at Kinigi is a short drive further. All trekkers meet there in the early morning for the briefing and group allocation. As a result, most visitors spend the night before in Musanze or Kinigi rather than driving from Kigali on trek day.
Arriving on a late flight
Many long-haul flights land in the evening. In that case, sleep in Kigali first and drive north the next day. Mountain roads are best driven in daylight, especially on your first visit.
Musanze town or Kinigi?
Where you sleep changes your morning drive. Musanze town has more budget hotels, restaurants, banks and fuel stations. Kinigi sits right beside the park headquarters, so your trek-day drive is very short. However, lodges there tend to be more expensive.
If you self-drive, staying in Musanze is easy because the road to Kinigi is simple. On the other hand, travellers who want the shortest possible morning drive often prefer Kinigi.
Your Musanze Gorilla Safari Transport Options
International travellers usually choose between three options. Each suits a different style of trip.
| Option | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive 4×4 | Collect a car in Kigali and drive yourself | Confident drivers on a multi-stop trip |
| Private car with driver | A local driver takes you and waits during the trek | First-time visitors and families |
| Packaged trip | Transport, lodging and permit arranged as one booking | Short trips with little planning time |
Self-drive
A self-drive rental gives you the most freedom. You can continue to Lake Kivu or Uganda afterwards without extra transfers. Remember that Rwanda drives on the right, and bring your licence plus an International Driving Permit if your licence requires one.
Car with a driver
With car hire with a driver, you can rest on the way and avoid navigating dark early-morning roads. Drivers know the Kinigi routine, the trailhead tracks and where to wait. Many also share local stories along the way.
Packaged trips
If your time is short, a package handles everything in one go. Our full day gorilla trekking safari covers the drive, the trek and the return. For a slower pace, the 5 days Rwanda gorilla safari adds more time in the region.
Which Vehicle Handles the Trailhead Roads?
The main road to Musanze is tarmac. However, after the Kinigi briefing you drive to the start point of your gorilla group. Some of these tracks are rough, rocky and muddy after rain.
For that reason, a high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended. A Land Cruiser handles every trailhead comfortably. A Prado or RAV4 can manage in dry weather, but you may need to park lower and walk a little further.
Trek Day: A Realistic Timeline
Gorilla trekking starts early, and the park runs to a strict schedule. Here is how a typical day looks.
- 5:30–6:00 am: leave your lodge in Musanze or Kinigi.
- Around 6:30–7:00 am: arrive at Kinigi headquarters for check-in and the briefing.
- About 8:00 am: drive to your group’s trailhead with your guide’s instructions.
- Morning: trek through farmland and forest, then spend one hour with the gorillas.
- Midday or early afternoon: return to the car, depending on your group’s distance.
Treks can take from a couple of hours to most of the day. So keep the afternoon flexible, and avoid booking a long onward drive straight afterwards.
Parking and porters
Cars park at the trailhead while you trek. Local porters wait there and can carry your bag for a fee. Hiring one supports the community and makes steep sections easier.
Practical Tips for International Visitors
- Book the permit first: Rwanda’s gorilla permit costs US$1,500, and busy dates sell out. Then book your vehicle and lodge around the confirmed date.
- Get a local SIM: mobile data helps with maps and keeping in touch with your rental agent.
- Carry some cash: useful for porters, tips and small purchases in rural areas.
- Pack for the trek: waterproof jacket, gloves for nettles, sturdy boots and a packed lunch.
- Fill the tank in Musanze: fuel stations are fewer once you head into the hills.
Continuing Your Trip After the Gorillas
With your own transport, it is easy to add more stops. Rubavu on Lake Kivu is about 1.5 hours from Musanze. Alternatively, the Cyanika border leads to Uganda, where you can visit Mgahinga or Bwindi. Check the Volcanoes National Park page for other activities like golden monkey trekking and the Dian Fossey hike.
FAQ: Getting to the Gorillas From Kigali
Can I drive from Kigali on the morning of the trek?
It is possible with a very early start, but it is risky. Delays could make you miss the briefing, so stay near the park the night before.
Does my driver come on the trek?
No. Your driver waits at the trailhead or nearby with the vehicle. Only permit holders join the trekking group.
Is a RAV4 enough for the trailhead roads?
In dry weather it often is. In the rainy season, a Land Cruiser or Prado is the safer choice.
Can I collect my car at the airport?
Yes. We hand over cars at Kigali International Airport, so you can start your trip as soon as you land.
