The canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest is one of Rwanda’s great experiences, but the park is a long way from Kigali. Getting your Nyungwe canopy walk transport right makes the difference between a rushed, tiring trip and a relaxed one. This guide covers routes, drive times, vehicles and timing, so you arrive at the trailhead fresh and on time.
Where the Canopy Walk Is and How Far It Is
Nyungwe National Park covers a huge area of mountain rainforest in south-west Rwanda. The canopy walkway starts from the Uwinka area, close to the main road that crosses the park. It is a suspended bridge high above a forested ravine, reached by a short hike.
From Kigali, the drive takes 5 to 6 hours. So most travellers spend at least two nights in or near the park. Lodges sit on both the eastern side near Kitabi and the western side near the Gisakura tea estate.

Nyungwe Canopy Walk Transport Routes From Kigali
There are two main ways to reach the forest by road. Both are paved, but they feel very different.
The southern route via Huye
This is the most direct option. You drive south from Kigali through Muhanga to Huye, then west into the forest. Huye is a good place to break the journey, with cafés, fuel and the Ethnographic Museum. After Huye, the road climbs into tea country and then into dense forest.
The Lake Kivu route
Many travellers come from the north instead, after gorilla trekking. They drive from Musanze to Rubavu, then south along Lake Kivu to Karongi and Rusizi, before turning east into Nyungwe. This road is very scenic but slow and winding. Therefore, split it into two days with a night by the lake.
| Starting point | Rough drive to Nyungwe |
|---|---|
| Kigali (via Huye) | 5 to 6 hours |
| Huye | About 2 hours |
| Rubavu (via Lake Kivu) | A full day, best split with a stop at Karongi |
Choosing a Vehicle for Nyungwe Canopy Walk Transport
The main road through Nyungwe is tarmac, so you do not need heavy off-road ability to reach the canopy walk. However, the road is narrow, steep and full of tight bends. Rain and fog are also common, because this is a rainforest.
- A Toyota RAV4 handles the main road well for couples on a budget.
- A Land Cruiser Prado gives more comfort and clearance for lodge access roads.
- A Land Cruiser is best if you also plan chimp tracking on rougher side tracks.
For most guests, the Land Cruiser Prado is the sweet spot. It is comfortable on long drives and copes with gravel spurs to lodges.
Self-Drive or Driver for the Nyungwe Trip?
Self-driving to Nyungwe is very doable. Still, it is the longest drive in Rwanda, and the forest road demands focus. As a result, many guests choose a driver for this leg.
A driver also helps with early starts. Chimpanzee tracking begins before dawn, and you may need to reach a trailhead in the dark. Our car hire with driver option lets you rest while someone local handles the bends.
Driving tips for the forest road
- Use headlights in fog, even in daytime.
- Watch for baboons and other monkeys on the road, and never feed them.
- Fill up in Huye or Rusizi, because there is no fuel inside the park.
- Plan to arrive before dark.
Timing Your Canopy Walk
The canopy walk runs at set times with park guides. Book your slot before you travel, since numbers on the bridge are limited. Park activity fees are set by the park and change, so check current rates.
Morning walks often have clearer views, while afternoons can bring rain. Ideally, stay the night before so you are not racing from Kigali. Then, after the walk, you can add a forest hike or a tea plantation visit.
Where to stay for easy access
Your lodge location shapes your driving each day. Lodges near Kitabi on the eastern edge are closest if you arrive from Huye. Meanwhile, stays around Gisakura on the western side suit travellers coming from Lake Kivu. From either side, Uwinka is usually under an hour’s drive. Ask your lodge for the latest road and weather news before you set off.
Combining with chimpanzee tracking
Many visitors pair the canopy walk with chimp tracking on the same trip. Do the chimps one morning and the canopy walk the next. That way, you are not rushing between trailheads. Our 5 days budget chimps and gorillas trip follows this pattern.
What to Bring in the Car
Nyungwe is cooler and wetter than Kigali. So pack for changing weather and keep these items handy in the vehicle.
- A rain jacket and a warm layer.
- Walking shoes with good grip for the trail to the walkway.
- Water, snacks and motion-sickness tablets for the winding road.
- Binoculars for birds and monkeys.
- Your booking confirmation and passport.
If you have a fear of heights, try the walk anyway. The bridge is sturdy, guides go at a calm pace, and the views make it worth it.
Also keep a small bag for the hike itself. The trail down to the walkway has steps and can be slippery, so leave heavy items in the locked vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit the canopy walk as a day trip from Kigali?
It is technically possible but very tiring, with 10 to 12 hours of driving. We strongly suggest at least one night near the park.
Do I need a 4×4 to reach the canopy walk?
Not strictly, since the main road is paved. However, a 4×4 is more comfortable and handles lodge roads and rain better.
Is there public transport to Nyungwe?
Buses pass through the park, but they do not wait at trailheads. Private transport is far more practical.
When is the best season?
The drier months, roughly June to September, bring fewer showers. Still, rain can fall any time in Nyungwe.
