Before You Book a Rwanda Border Crossing Rental Car

Not every rental car may leave the country. So the first step is simple: tell the rental company which countries you plan to enter, and when. That lets them prepare the right paperwork and choose a suitable vehicle.

Give at least a week’s notice, and more in peak season. Late changes to your route can be hard to cover, because some documents take time to issue. Our cross-border car hire page explains which destinations we cover.

Which countries are realistic?

  • Uganda: the most common choice, for Bwindi, Mgahinga and Lake Bunyonyi.
  • Tanzania: possible via Rusumo, best for longer trips.
  • Kenya: usually reached through Uganda, so plan for two crossings.
  • DR Congo: requires extra checks and arrangements. Always ask first and check current travel advice.

Documents Checklist

Keep everything in one waterproof folder on the passenger seat. Officers may ask for any of these.

For the vehicle

  • Original registration document (logbook) or a certified copy, as agreed with the company
  • A cross-border authorisation letter, signed and stamped by the rental company
  • COMESA Yellow Card, the regional third-party insurance, valid for each country you enter
  • The rental agreement showing your name as the driver

For you

  • Passport with at least six months’ validity and blank pages
  • Visa for the next country, or the East Africa Tourist Visa for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • National driving licence plus an International Driving Permit

Rwanda’s Main Border Posts

Border postIntoApprox. drive from Kigali
Gatuna / KatunaUganda (Kabale)About 1.5 hours
CyanikaUganda (Kisoro)About 3 hours via Musanze
KagitumbaUganda (Mirama Hills)Around 3 hours
RusumoTanzaniaAround 3 hours
Rubavu (Gisenyi)DR Congo (Goma)3–3.5 hours

Gatuna and Rusumo are one-stop border posts, where both countries’ officers work in the same building. As a result, they are usually the fastest crossings.

What Happens at the Border, Step by Step

The order can vary slightly, but most crossings follow this pattern.

  1. Park in the marked area and lock the car. Don’t leave valuables on the seats.
  2. Exit immigration: get your passport stamped out of Rwanda.
  3. Vehicle exit at customs: show the authorisation letter and vehicle documents.
  4. Entry immigration: present your passport, visa and yellow fever card for the next country.
  5. Vehicle entry at customs: the officer records the car and may issue a temporary permit.
  6. Pay any fees: road-use or permit fees vary, so carry cash in US dollars and local currency.
  7. Insurance check: show your COMESA Yellow Card if asked.
  8. Drive on, switching sides if you are entering Uganda, Tanzania or Kenya, which drive on the left.

A smooth crossing can take under an hour. On busy days, it may take two or three. Keep every receipt and stamped form, because you will need them on the way back. Officers may also check that the same car and driver are leaving as arrived.

Tips to Avoid Delays

  • Arrive in daylight, ideally in the morning. Queues are often shorter, and you reach your lodge before dark.
  • Use official offices only. Ignore touts offering to speed things up.
  • Change money at banks or official bureaus, not with street dealers.
  • Check opening hours for smaller posts before you set off.
  • Keep copies of all documents, plus photos on your phone.
  • Stay patient and polite. A friendly greeting goes a long way.

Returning to Rwanda

The process repeats in reverse. Remember that plastic bags are banned in Rwanda, so remove any before you reach customs. Also, switch back to driving on the right once you cross.

Timing the Crossing Around Your Itinerary

A border day is never just a driving day. So build it into your plan rather than squeezing it between activities.

  • Don’t cross on a trekking day. Gorilla briefings start early, and a slow queue could cost you a permit.
  • Allow a buffer of two hours on top of normal drive time.
  • Book your first night close to the border, such as Lake Bunyonyi after Gatuna or Kisoro after Cyanika.
  • Avoid public holidays where possible, as posts can be busier and some offices short-staffed.

For example, a sensible plan is to leave Kigali after breakfast, cross at Gatuna mid-morning and reach Lake Bunyonyi for lunch. You then trek in Bwindi a day or two later, fully rested.

Picking the Right Car for Cross-Border Trips

Long drives and mixed roads call for a tough, comfortable vehicle. A Land Cruiser Safari or Land Cruiser Prado handles Bwindi’s steep murram roads with ease. They are also easy to service anywhere in the region. A RAV4 suits good tarmac routes, but not rough park access roads.

FAQ: Rwanda Border Crossing Rental Car Trips

Can I add a country after I have collected the car?

Sometimes, but it is harder. Documents may need to be reissued, so tell us as early as possible.

Does the COMESA Yellow Card cover damage to the rental car?

No. It covers third-party liability. Damage to the vehicle depends on the cover in your rental agreement, so check it before you go.

How much cash should I carry for the border?

Carry enough for vehicle permits and visa fees, plus a buffer. Fees change, so ask us for current guidance.

Can a driver-guide handle the crossing for me?

Yes. With car hire with driver, the driver deals with vehicle formalities while you handle your own passport.
