Rwanda is small, but it sits at the heart of East Africa’s best wildlife country. A Rwanda multi country safari lets you start in Kigali and add Uganda’s gorillas and chimps, or Tanzania’s plains, in one road trip. This guide shows which combinations work, how long each route really takes, and how to set up one 4×4 for the whole journey.
Why Start a Rwanda Multi Country Safari in Kigali
Kigali is one of the easiest arrival points in the region. The airport is close to the city, roads are in good shape, and the main parks are a short drive away. As a result, you can settle in, collect your vehicle and be on safari the next morning.
Rwanda also borders Uganda, Tanzania and the DRC. So, from Kigali, the Katuna border with Uganda is only about 1.5 hours away. That short hop opens up Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi and Queen Elizabeth National Park without a flight.
Finally, one vehicle for the whole trip means no repacking and no changing drivers at each border. You keep the same car, the same kit and, if you want one, the same driver-guide throughout.

Three Country Combinations That Work
Not every combination makes sense by road. Here are the routes that fit real holiday lengths, from shortest to longest.
Rwanda and Uganda (10–15 days)
This is the classic pairing and the easiest to drive. You can trek gorillas in Volcanoes or Bwindi, track chimps in Nyungwe or Kibale, and add a savannah park on either side. Most travellers cross at Katuna or Cyanika, near Musanze.
A typical loop runs Kigali, Akagera, Musanze, then into Uganda for Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth, and back via Lake Bunyonyi. For a ready-made version, see our 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari.
Rwanda and Tanzania (12–18 days)
The Rusumo border in the east leads into north-western Tanzania. From there, the drive towards the Serengeti is long, so plan at least one overnight stop each way. This route suits travellers who want gorillas in Rwanda and big herds in Tanzania.
Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya (3 weeks or more)
Kenya is reachable by road through Uganda, but it adds several long driving days. It works best for overland travellers with time to spare. Otherwise, many people drive Rwanda and Uganda, then fly on to Kenya.
Realistic Driving Times on a Rwanda Multi Country Safari
Distances look short on a map, but hills, villages and border queues slow you down. Plan around these rough times:
| Leg | Typical driving time |
|---|---|
| Kigali → Musanze (Volcanoes) | 2–2.5 hours |
| Kigali → Akagera gate | About 2.5 hours |
| Kigali → Nyungwe | 5–6 hours |
| Kigali → Katuna border | About 1.5 hours |
| Kigali → Bwindi (via Katuna or Cyanika) | 5–7 hours |
Add one to two hours for each border crossing. A good rule is to drive no more than six hours a day. That leaves time for game drives, lunch and arriving before dark. Also, build in a rest day after every three or four travel days.
One 4×4 for Every Country
A multi-country route mixes smooth highways, rough park tracks and steep gorilla-country roads. So, the vehicle needs to handle all three, and carry your luggage comfortably for two weeks or more.
- Land Cruiser Safari: the best all-rounder, with a pop-up roof for game viewing and space for four to six people.
- Land Cruiser Prado: comfortable on long drives and capable off-road, ideal for couples and small families.
- Toyota RAV4: fine for a budget Rwanda–Uganda loop in the dry season, with lighter luggage.
- Rooftop tent 4×4: lets you camp in parks and cut lodge costs on longer routes.
Whatever you choose, confirm in your quote that the vehicle is cleared to cross the specific borders on your route.
Border Paperwork in Brief
Each crossing needs paperwork for both you and the car. We prepare the vehicle documents in advance, and you handle your own visas. For a full step-by-step checklist, see our cross-border car hire page.
For the vehicle
- Written authorisation from the rental company to take the car abroad
- A copy of the registration document
- COMESA Yellow Card insurance covering each country on your route
- Any temporary import permit issued at the border
For you
- A passport valid for at least six months
- Visas for each country, or the East Africa Tourist Visa for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya
- Your driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if requested
- A yellow fever certificate
One more thing to remember: Rwanda drives on the right, while Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania drive on the left. Take the first few kilometres after each border slowly.
Budgeting and Booking Tips
Gorilla permits are usually the biggest single cost. In Rwanda, a permit is US$1,500. Uganda’s permits are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and change, so check current rates when you plan.
Next, factor in cross-border fees, insurance, fuel and park entry for every country. Fuel prices differ across borders, so fill up where it is cheaper. Also, book permits and the vehicle early for June to September and December to February, the busiest months.
Finally, decide early between self-drive and a driver-guide. A driver who knows the border posts saves real time on longer routes. Their accommodation and meals are usually part of the quote, so ask how those are handled.
If you have extra days at the end, keep them in Rwanda. A slow finish at Lake Kivu or in Kigali gives you a buffer before your flight home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drop the car in Uganda or Tanzania instead of Kigali?
One-way drop-offs may be possible but usually cost extra to bring the vehicle back. Ask for this when you request a quote, so it can be priced into your plan.
Which border is fastest for Bwindi?
Cyanika, near Musanze, is closest to southern Bwindi and Mgahinga. Katuna is better if you are heading to Lake Bunyonyi, the northern sectors or Queen Elizabeth.
Is a multi-country self-drive safe for first-timers?
Yes, on the main routes, if you avoid driving after dark and allow extra time at borders. If you are nervous about left-hand traffic, consider a driver for the Uganda section.
How many days do I need for Rwanda and Uganda together?
Ten days is the realistic minimum for gorillas, chimps and one savannah park. Fifteen days gives you a relaxed pace with rest stops.
