Self-drive Rwanda safari itineraries for ultimate holiday freedom

Driving yourself means the holiday runs on your clock, not a tour bus timetable. These self-drive Rwanda safari itineraries give you ready-made plans from three days to two weeks, each with realistic driving times and where to sleep. Pick the one that fits, then bend it to suit your own pace.

Self-drive Rwanda safari itineraries for ultimate holiday freedom

How to Use These Itineraries

Each plan starts and ends in Kigali, where you collect and return the car. Drive times are typical for daylight and dry weather: about 2 to 2.5 hours to Musanze, 2.5 hours to the Akagera gate, 3 to 3.5 hours to Rubavu and 5 to 6 hours to Nyungwe.

As a rule, we keep driving to under five hours a day. We also avoid night driving entirely. If a plan feels rushed for you, add a night rather than cutting a stop.

3 Days: The Gorilla Escape

Perfect if you are adding Rwanda to a wider Africa trip or have only a long weekend.

  • Day 1: Collect the car in Kigali and drive north to Musanze. In the afternoon, visit a community cultural village or the twin lakes viewpoint.
  • Day 2: Early briefing at Kinigi, then gorilla trek. Relax at your lodge afterwards.
  • Day 3: Golden monkey tracking in the morning, or a slow breakfast. Drive back to Kigali.

Gorilla permits cost US$1,500 and are issued by RDB, so book them before anything else.

5 Days: Savannah and Mountains

This plan gives you both sides of Rwanda: the Big Five plains and the gorilla volcanoes.

  1. Day 1: Kigali to Akagera. Afternoon game drive in the south and a boat trip on Lake Ihema.
  2. Day 2: Dawn game drive north across the plains. Exit by the northern gate and return to Kigali.
  3. Day 3: Drive to Musanze. Easy afternoon.
  4. Day 4: Gorilla trek.
  5. Day 5: Return to Kigali, with a stop for lunch at Nyirangarama on the way.

7 Days: The Classic Self-Drive Rwanda Safari Itinerary

A week lets you add Lake Kivu, which most travellers say is the most relaxing part of their trip.

  • Days 1–2: Akagera, as in the five-day plan.
  • Day 3: Kigali to Musanze.
  • Day 4: Gorilla trek.
  • Day 5: Choose a second activity: golden monkeys, the hike to Dian Fossey’s grave or a canoe on the twin lakes.
  • Day 6: Short drive to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Swim, eat fresh tilapia and watch the sunset over the water from a lakeside terrace.
  • Day 7: Return to Kigali, about 3 to 3.5 hours.

10 Days: The Grand Rwanda Loop

This route covers all three main parks and the length of Lake Kivu without backtracking.

  1. Days 1–2: Akagera game drives, then back to Kigali.
  2. Days 3–5: Volcanoes for gorillas plus one extra trek.
  3. Day 6: Musanze to Rubavu on Lake Kivu.
  4. Day 7: Drive south along the lake to Karongi. The road is winding, so take your time.
  5. Day 8: Continue to Nyungwe via Rusizi.
  6. Day 9: Chimp tracking or the canopy walk in Nyungwe.
  7. Day 10: Drive back to Kigali via Huye, stopping at the Ethnographic Museum.

See our Nyungwe National Park page for activity details.

14 Days: Rwanda Plus Uganda

With two weeks, cross into southwest Uganda for a second gorilla country and more wildlife. Follow the 10-day loop as far as Volcanoes. Then cross at Cyanika to Mgahinga or Bwindi, and continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Remember that Uganda drives on the left, while Rwanda drives on the right. The car also needs cross-border papers, which we prepare in advance. Read about it on our cross-border car hire page, or compare our 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari.

The Camping Variation

Any of these plans works with a rooftop tent. Camping saves on lodge costs and puts you closer to nature. Akagera has campsites inside the park, and there are camping options near Volcanoes, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe.

However, check site availability before you go, especially in the dry season. Our car rental with camping gear includes tent, bedding and cooking kit.

Pacing Tips for Self-Drive Rwanda Safari Itineraries

A good plan on paper can still feel rushed on the road. These small adjustments keep the freedom in your holiday.

  • Keep your last day light. End within easy reach of Kigali, and do not plan a long drive on the day you fly out.
  • Add one buffer day on longer trips. Rain, a slow border or a great sighting can all eat time.
  • Check for Umuganda. On the last Saturday of the month, traffic is restricted in the morning, so start after midday.
  • Fuel up in towns. Kayonza, Musanze, Rubavu, Huye and Rusizi are your reliable stops.
  • Book permits first, then build around them. Your gorilla date is fixed; everything else can move.

Itinerary FAQs

Can I change my itinerary once I have the car?

Yes, that is the beauty of self-drive. Just tell us if you plan to cross a border, since that needs paperwork.

Which itinerary is best for families with children?

The 7-day plan, because it mixes short drives with rest days at Lake Kivu. Note that gorilla trekking has a minimum age, currently 15.

Do I need to book lodges in advance?

For Akagera and Nyungwe, yes, because choices are limited. Musanze and Rubavu have more flexibility.

Is the lakeside road from Rubavu to Rusizi suitable for self-drive?

Yes, with care. It is scenic but slow and winding, so allow a full day and avoid driving it after dark.
