Some of East Africa’s best primate tracking sits just across Rwanda’s borders. Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda hold mountain gorillas, while Kibale is famous for chimpanzees. A Rwanda border-crossing safari car rental lets you start in Kigali, track in two countries and return without changing vehicles.
Why Use a Rwanda Border-Crossing Safari Car Rental for Tracking
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is world famous for gorillas. However, many travellers combine it with Uganda for variety, availability or budget. For instance, permits in one country may be sold out on your dates while the other still has space.
Popular cross-border tracking combinations
- Volcanoes and Bwindi: two gorilla treks in different forests.
- Volcanoes and Mgahinga: gorillas and golden monkeys close to the border.
- Nyungwe and Kibale: chimpanzee tracking in two countries.
- Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth: gorillas plus a savanna game drive.
Permits are set by the Rwanda Development Board and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and both change from time to time. The Rwanda gorilla permit is US$1,500; check current Uganda rates directly with UWA before you book.

Choosing Your Border Crossing
Two crossings serve most tracking trips into southwest Uganda. Your choice depends on which park you are heading for.
| Crossing | From Kigali | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gatuna / Katuna | About 1.5 hours | Kabale, southern Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi |
| Cyanika | Via Musanze | Mgahinga, Kisoro and southern Bwindi sectors |
From Kigali, reaching Bwindi usually takes 5 to 7 hours in total, depending on the sector and crossing. Because the roads near Bwindi are steep and unpaved, plan to arrive before dark. Read more about the area on our Bwindi and Mgahinga page.
Paperwork for a Rwanda Border-Crossing Safari Car Rental
A rental car cannot cross a border on the driver’s passport alone. It needs its own documents, which we prepare before you collect the vehicle. So tell us at booking which countries you plan to enter.
Documents for the vehicle
- Vehicle registration papers
- A letter of authority from us allowing the car to leave Rwanda
- Regional third-party insurance (often called COMESA Yellow Card)
- Any temporary import permit required at the border
Documents for you
- A valid passport and the right visa for each country
- Your driving licence and, where needed, an international driving permit
- Printed or digital copies of your tracking permits
Visa rules change, so check them before travel. Some visitors use the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya together.
Our cross-border car hire page explains the full process in more detail.
What Changes Once You Cross
The biggest change is simple but important. Rwanda drives on the right, while Uganda drives on the left. So take the first few kilometres slowly, especially at junctions and roundabouts.
Other differences to expect
- Speed bumps and village trading centres are frequent in Uganda.
- Fuel is sold in Ugandan shillings; carry some local cash.
- Mobile networks differ, so buy a local SIM or check roaming.
- Roads to tracking trailheads are often rougher than in Rwanda.
Also, keep the vehicle documents together in the glovebox. Police checkpoints may ask to see them on either side of the border.
The Right Vehicle for Tracking Trips
Tracking trips mean early starts, wet forest roads and steep climbs to trailheads. Therefore, a proper 4×4 with low range is essential. The Land Cruiser Safari handles Bwindi’s roads well and has room for boots, rain gear and luggage.
For couples, a Land Cruiser Prado also works on most routes. However, choose the larger vehicle if you plan to camp or carry lots of gear.
Self-drive or with a driver-guide?
Self-drive gives you freedom and privacy. On the other hand, a driver-guide knows the border routine, the trailhead roads and the left-hand traffic. Many first-time visitors choose our car hire with driver for cross-border tracking trips.
Tips for a Smooth Day at the Border
Border posts on this route are generally calm and well run. Still, a little preparation saves time.
- Arrive in the morning, when queues are usually shorter.
- Keep passports, permits and vehicle papers in one folder.
- Clear Rwandan exit formalities first, then drive to the Ugandan side.
- Do not photograph border buildings or officials.
- Change a small amount of money at an official bureau, not on the street.
Allow roughly an hour for the whole crossing, though it is often quicker.
Timing Your Treks Around the Drive
Tracking briefings start early, often around 7:00 to 8:00. So never plan a long drive on the morning of a trek. Instead, sleep close to the park headquarters the night before.
Also, leave a buffer day if you can. Rain, a slow border or a flat tyre can all delay you. A spare day protects an expensive permit.
A Sample Six-Day Tracking Route
Here is one way to combine gorillas in both countries. Adjust it to match your permit dates.
- Day 1: Kigali to Musanze (2 to 2.5 hours). Rest and prepare.
- Day 2: Gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.
- Day 3: Cross at Cyanika and drive to Kisoro or a Bwindi southern sector lodge.
- Day 4: Gorilla trek in Bwindi.
- Day 5: Drive to Lake Bunyonyi for a rest day.
- Day 6: Return via Katuna to Kigali.
