Rent a Car for Golden Monkey Tracking Safari

A golden monkey tracking safari is one of the most joyful wildlife trips in Rwanda. These bright orange-and-gold primates live in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, and you can reach them easily by car from Kigali. With a 4×4 from 4×4 Car Rental Rwanda, you can follow this four-day plan, which adds caves, chimpanzees and a canopy walk.

Golden Monkey Tracking Safari: The 4-Day Plan

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kigali and transfer to your lodge.
  • Day 2: Golden monkey tracking and the Musanze Caves.
  • Day 3: Drive to Nyungwe and enjoy the canopy walk.
  • Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking, then return to Kigali.

The plan works as a self-drive or with one of our experienced driver-guides. Either way, you control the pace and can add extra nights where you like.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Your Lodge

Our driver-guide or rental agent welcomes you in the arrivals hall at Kigali International Airport. If you are self-driving, we hand over the car and check your documents there. Our Kigali airport transfers make this first step quick and easy.

Next, drive to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. If you land early, you can head straight to Musanze, which is about 2–2.5 hours away. That way, you are close to the park for the next morning.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Tracking and the Musanze Caves

Tracking the Golden Monkeys

Start with an early breakfast. Then drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi for your briefing. Golden monkeys are endangered and found only in the Virunga region. They usually stay in the bamboo forest at the base of the volcanoes.

Because they live on the lower slopes, the hike is usually shorter and easier than a gorilla trek. Once you find the troop, you spend one hour watching them. They leap between bamboo stems, feed and play, so keep your camera ready.

Golden Monkey Permits

Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). RDB sets the fee and it changes from time to time. So check the current price and book ahead, especially in the busy June to September season.

Afternoon at the Musanze Caves

After lunch at your lodge, visit the Musanze Caves. These lava tubes once sheltered local kings and their people during wartime. Today, the caves have tall ceilings and bat-covered roofs that feel almost like a cathedral. A guided visit takes about an hour or two, and then you return to your lodge for dinner.

Day 3: Drive to Nyungwe and the Canopy Walk

Leave Musanze early, because Nyungwe Forest National Park is a long drive away. The route via Kigali takes most of the day. Alternatively, follow the scenic Kivu Belt road along Lake Kivu if you have extra time.

The Canopy Walk

If you arrive by mid-afternoon, head straight to the canopy walk. This suspension bridge hangs high above the treetops, about 50 metres above a valley. It gives you a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest and its birds and monkeys. Otherwise, save it for the next afternoon if you add a night.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking and Return to Kigali

Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe

Set off before dawn to meet the rangers for chimpanzee tracking. Chimps are lively and noisy, so you often hear them before you see them. Compared to golden monkeys, they move faster and the hike can be steeper. After an hour with them, return to your lodge for brunch.

Driving Back and the Kigali Genocide Memorial

Next, drive back to Kigali, which takes about 5–6 hours. If time allows, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It is a place of reflection, and it helps you understand Rwanda’s history and the 1994 genocide. Alternatively, pick up souvenirs at a craft market. Finally, drop off the car at the airport or ask your guide to take you there.

Golden Monkeys or Gorillas: Which Should You Choose?

Many travellers do both, and that is a great plan if your budget allows. However, the two treks feel quite different. Golden monkeys are small, fast and playful. Gorillas, by contrast, are calm, huge and deeply moving to watch.

  • Hike: golden monkey treks are usually shorter and flatter.
  • Cost: golden monkey permits cost far less than the widely published US$1,500 gorilla permit.
  • Availability: golden monkey permits are easier to get at short notice.
  • Photography: monkeys move quickly, so use a fast shutter speed.

If you add gorillas, simply stay an extra night in Musanze. Our 5 days Rwanda gorilla safari shows how to fit both into one trip.

Best Time for Golden Monkey Tracking

You can track golden monkeys all year. Still, the drier months of June to September and December to February bring firmer trails and easier driving. In the wet seasons, the bamboo is lush and the monkeys are often busy feeding on fresh shoots. So the wet months can be rewarding too, as long as you pack good rain gear.

What Your Car Hire Includes

Every rental comes with comprehensive insurance and 24/7 roadside support. We also offer unlimited mileage on most bookings. If you book with a driver, their fuel, meals and accommodation are agreed in your quote, so there are no surprises later.

Best Car for a Golden Monkey Tracking Safari

The main roads in Rwanda are tarmac. However, the tracks to trailheads in Volcanoes and some lodge roads are rough and can be muddy. A high-clearance 4×4 is the safest choice.

  • Couples: a Toyota RAV4 is affordable and easy to drive.
  • Families: a Land Cruiser Prado gives more room and comfort.
  • Photographers: a Land Cruiser Safari with a pop-up roof is ideal.
  • Groups: a Toyota Hiace van carries everyone together.

Car Hire Options From Kigali

We offer several ways to rent, so you can match the service to your trip. For example, choose self drive Rwanda rentals for full freedom. If you prefer to sit back, book car hire with a driver instead.

Cross-Border Trips

Want to add Uganda? Our cross-border car hire lets you continue to Mgahinga, Bwindi or Lake Bunyonyi. We prepare the paperwork before you leave Kigali.

Families, Groups and VIP Travel

We also arrange family and group vehicles, plus VIP car hire for guests who want extra comfort. Corporate clients, weddings and events are welcome too. Budget travellers can ask about economy options and current offers.

Travel Tips for Your Primate Safari

  • Wear waterproof hiking boots and long trousers tucked into socks.
  • Bring a light rain jacket, because showers are common in the forest.
  • Carry gardening gloves to grip plants on steep paths.
  • Keep at least seven metres from the primates and follow your ranger.
  • Do not trek if you have a cold or flu, since primates catch human illnesses.
  • Avoid driving rural roads after dark.
