Car Hire Rwanda gorilla trekking permit travel guide

Your gorilla trekking permit is the one booking that every other part of a Rwanda trip has to fit around. Once you hold a permit for a fixed date, your car hire, your night in Musanze and your drive from Kigali all need to line up with a 7 a.m. briefing at Kinigi. This guide walks you through securing the permit first and then building the transport plan around it.

How the Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit Works

Rwanda Development Board (RDB) issues all permits for Volcanoes National Park. A permit gives one person one hour with one habituated gorilla family on one specific date. The widely published price is US$1,500 per person. However, RDB sets and reviews fees, so always confirm the current rate before you pay.

Each habituated family can receive only eight visitors a day. As a result, permits sell out months ahead in the busy June–September and December–February periods. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old on the day of the trek.

Ways to book

  • Directly with RDB through its online booking system, paying by card.
  • Through a registered tour operator, who reserves the date and sends you the permit confirmation.
  • Bundled with transport, where your car hire company coordinates the permit and the vehicle together.

Whichever route you choose, you will need your passport details exactly as printed. A name mismatch can cause problems at check-in, so double-check spelling before payment.

Book the Permit First, the Car Second

Many travellers reserve a vehicle and then discover no permits remain for their dates. Instead, lock in the permit date first. After that, build the rest of the itinerary backwards from it.

For example, if your trek is on a Wednesday, you want to be sleeping in Musanze or Kinigi on Tuesday night. That means collecting your 4×4 in Kigali on Tuesday morning at the latest. If you land at Kigali International Airport the same day, ask for an airport pickup so you can head north without detours.

A simple permit-led timeline

DayWhat happens
Day before trekCollect car in Kigali, drive 2–2.5 hours to Musanze, check in near the park
Trek dayLeave by 6 a.m., report at Kinigi park HQ for the 7 a.m. briefing
AfternoonReturn from the trek, rest, or continue to Lake Kivu

Getting to Kinigi on Trek Day

The briefing at Kinigi headquarters is not flexible. Rangers assign groups to gorilla families there, and latecomers risk losing their slot. Your permit is not refundable if you miss it, so the drive on trek morning matters a lot.

Driving from Kigali on the morning itself is possible but risky. The road is good tarmac, yet fog, trucks and police checkpoints can slow you down. Staying in Musanze the night before turns a stressful dawn drive into a 20–30 minute hop.

Trailheads can be rough

After the briefing, you drive yourself or follow your guide to the trailhead for your assigned family. Some starting points sit at the end of steep, rocky village tracks. This is where a proper 4×4 earns its keep, especially in the rainy months of March–May and October–November.

Choosing the Right Vehicle for a Gorilla Trek

You do not need a huge vehicle for the trek itself. However, the trailhead roads reward ground clearance and four-wheel drive. Here is how our main options compare for this trip.

  • Toyota RAV4 – fine for couples on a short gorilla trip in the dry season.
  • Land Cruiser Prado – more clearance and comfort for families or wet-season travel.
  • Land Cruiser Safari – the best choice if you will combine gorillas with Akagera game drives.

If you would rather not drive the trailhead tracks, consider a car with a driver. Local drivers know which families start from which villages, and they wait for you at the bottom of the trail.

Self-Drive or Driver on Your Gorilla Trekking Permit Date?

Both options work well. The right choice depends on your confidence and your wider route.

Self-drive suits you if

  • You are comfortable on steep dirt roads and driving on the right.
  • You want freedom to continue to Rubavu or Nyungwe afterwards.
  • You enjoy navigating with an offline map.

A driver suits you if

  • You want to sleep in the car after a tiring trek.
  • You are nervous about missing the 7 a.m. check-in.
  • You have only one or two days in the country.

Our self-drive Rwanda option includes a route briefing, so first-time visitors still feel prepared.

What to Pack in the Car for Trek Day

The forest is cool, wet and muddy, even in the dry season. Because you will return to the vehicle dirty, keep a change of clothes and a bag for muddy boots in the boot.

  • Printed or digital copy of your gorilla trekking permit and passport
  • Waterproof jacket and gardening gloves for nettles
  • Sturdy boots and long trousers tucked into socks
  • Packed lunch and at least two litres of water
  • Small cash for a porter, who also helps the local community

Extending the Trip Beyond the Gorillas

Most visitors add a second activity once the permit date is fixed. Golden monkey tracking, the Dian Fossey tomb hike and the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo are all close to Musanze. Alternatively, drive 3 hours west to Lake Kivu, or loop south to Nyungwe for chimpanzees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the date on my gorilla permit?

RDB sometimes allows rescheduling under its current policy, often with conditions or fees. Check the terms at the time of booking, and plan your car hire dates with a little buffer.

Do I need a 4×4 just for the trek?

Not always, but it helps. Some trailhead tracks are steep and slippery, and a low saloon car may not reach the start point.

How early should I collect the car before my trek?

Collect it the day before. That lets you drive to Musanze in daylight and sleep close to Kinigi.

Can you help with the permit as well as the vehicle?

Yes. Tell us your preferred dates and we will check availability before you commit to the car.
