Car Rental in Rwanda Kigali airport arrival guide 2026

Your first hour in Rwanda sets the tone for the whole trip. This Kigali airport arrival guide walks you from the plane door to the driver’s seat of your rental car. It covers immigration, money, SIM cards, the vehicle handover and your first drive into the city.

Before You Land: A Kigali Airport Arrival Guide Checklist

A little preparation on the plane saves time in the arrivals hall. So have these ready in your hand luggage, not in your checked bag.

  • Your passport, with at least six months of validity.
  • Your visa approval, or cash or card for a visa on arrival if your nationality qualifies.
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are coming from a risk country.
  • Your driving licence and International Driving Permit, if you will self-drive.
  • The rental confirmation and the name and number of the person meeting you.

Visa rules change, so check the official Rwanda immigration website before you fly. Also note that Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags. Leave them at home, because officers may take them at the airport.

From the Plane to the Arrivals Hall

Kigali International Airport is small and well organised. Most travellers clear immigration, collect bags and pass customs in under an hour. However, it can take longer when several long-haul flights land together.

Immigration and baggage

Fill in any arrival form handed out on the plane. Then join the right queue for visa holders or visa on arrival. After that, collect your bags and walk through customs, where staff may scan luggage.

Money and SIM cards

You will find ATMs and mobile network desks near arrivals. A local SIM is worth buying straight away, because you will use maps and WhatsApp on the road. Bring your passport, since SIM registration needs it. Also withdraw some Rwandan francs for fuel, parking and snacks.

The Kigali Airport Arrival Guide to Meeting Your Car

When you walk out of arrivals, look for a sign with your name. Our team tracks your flight, so a delay will not leave you stranded. If you cannot spot anyone, message the number on your booking rather than accepting help from strangers.

The handover usually happens in the airport car park. Expect it to take 20 to 30 minutes if you are driving yourself. This is time well spent, so do not rush it after a long flight.

What to check during the handover

  1. Walk around the car and photograph every scratch or dent.
  2. Check the spare tyre, jack and wheel spanner are on board.
  3. Test lights, wipers, air conditioning and the 4×4 switch.
  4. Note the fuel level and confirm the return policy.
  5. Save the 24-hour support number in your phone.

Self-Drive Straight Away or Take a Transfer?

Many visitors land late in the evening, tired after a long journey. Driving an unfamiliar car in a new country at night is not ideal. So consider your arrival time before deciding.

Arrival timeOur suggestion
Morning or afternoonCollect the car at the airport and drive to your hotel
Evening or nightTake a transfer, then get the car delivered to your hotel next morning
Heading straight to a parkBook a driver for day one, or stay a night in Kigali first

Our Kigali airport transfers run at any hour. If you only need short city rides later, our Kigali city taxi service is another option.

Your First Drive Into Kigali

The airport sits in Kanombe, east of the city centre. The drive to most central hotels takes about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Roads are paved, well lit and clearly marked.

  • Rwanda drives on the right, so take extra care at the first roundabouts.
  • Speed limits are enforced with cameras, and fines are common.
  • Seat belts are required for all passengers.
  • Watch for moto-taxis, which change lanes quickly.

If this is your first time driving on the right, practise in the car park first. Our self-drive Rwanda page has more tips for new drivers.

Stock up on the way

Fuel stations are easy to find on the airport road and around the city. So you do not need to fill up the moment you leave. However, it is smart to buy water, snacks and a phone charger cable in Kigali. Supermarkets in town are well stocked, while shops near the parks are smaller and close earlier.

Planning Day One After You Arrive

Most people do not head straight for a national park. Instead, they spend a day in Kigali to rest and adjust. This is a good chance to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, browse craft shops and try a local restaurant.

From Kigali, you can then reach Musanze in 2 to 2.5 hours, Akagera’s gate in about 2.5 hours, or Lake Kivu in 3 to 3.5 hours. If you have a gorilla permit, which RDB sells at US$1,500, do not schedule your trek for the morning after a late arrival. For ideas, see our 3 days Kigali tour.

Returning the Car at Departure

Plan your departure day as carefully as your arrival. Cars pass a security check before entering the airport grounds, so allow extra time. Aim to arrive about three hours before an international flight.

Refuel near the airport if your policy requires a full tank. Then meet our team at the agreed point, hand over the keys and walk through the car together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the car be ready if my flight lands at 2 a.m.?

Yes, but we suggest a transfer instead. Driving at night after a long flight is tiring. We can deliver the car to your hotel later that morning.

Is there parking at the airport for drop-off?

Yes. Our team will meet you in the car park or at departures, whichever we agree in advance.

Do I pay anything when I collect the car?

That depends on your booking. Any balance and the deposit are confirmed beforehand, so there are no surprises on arrival.
