Popular Routes for an East Africa Safari From Kigali
Most overland trips from Rwanda follow one of three broad routes. Your choice depends on time, budget and which wildlife you most want to see.
Route 1: Rwanda and Uganda
This is the most popular combination. After Volcanoes or Akagera, cross into south-west Uganda for gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga. Then continue north to Queen Elizabeth National Park for tree-climbing lions and boat trips. Reaching Bwindi from Kigali takes about 5 to 7 hours via the Katuna or Cyanika border.
Route 2: Rwanda and Tanzania
Crossing at Rusumo, east of Akagera, leads into north-west Tanzania. The famous northern parks, such as the Serengeti, are a long drive from there. Allow several days for the journey, or combine driving with a regional flight.
Route 3: Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya
For a grand loop, drive through Uganda into western Kenya, then on towards the Masai Mara. This needs at least two to three weeks and careful planning.

Switching Sides of the Road
This catches many drivers out. Rwanda drives on the right. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania all drive on the left.
So, after crossing, take the first few kilometres slowly. Be especially careful at roundabouts, junctions and when pulling out after a stop. A passenger who reminds you which side to keep to is genuinely useful for the first day.
Choosing a Vehicle for a Multi-Country Safari
A long overland trip puts real demands on a vehicle. Roads range from smooth highways to deeply rutted park tracks.
