Crime

The levels of crime in Rwanda are low but we can not rule out the fact that you shall not fall victim of Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching that are frequent in vehicles, hotel rooms and crowded places such as markets.

Endeavour to secure your personal belongings and travel documents at all times, avoid carrying large sums of money, keep the windows and doors of your cars closed at all times and avoid wearing expensive jewellery and accessories.  

Although rare, violent crime like burglary, armed robberies and assault may occur although Tourists are not usually targeted so you need to beware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas and do not travel alone especially during the night.

Road safety 

The road system is generally good and well maintained in Kigali and on main roads throughout the country. Outside of these areas, most roads are not paved, and driving may be dangerous.

Also, Rwanda has very strict road safety rules; probably the most strict in East Africa for example the presence of speed cameras,  heavy penalties on DUI and the strict use of seat belts.

Health safety

Apart from the recent outbreak of Marburg Fever Virus and Mpox, Rwanda has always maintained high health standards and is praised to have managed the Covid-19  outbreak better than any other country in East Africa.

 The World  Health Organisation has stepped in and put in place efforts to  help reinforce measures curb the Mpox. When driving in Rwanda, go through the necessary screening and avoid close contact with people that show any sign of sickness.

Malaria is also common in the camping sites especially during the rainy season. On your self drive trip, carry insect repellent and insist on sleeping under a mosquito net.

Sexually transmitted diseases like HIV are also common so you need to reduce on the number of Sexual partners or practice safe sex. Also check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for the Mpox vaccine.  

As much as it is safe to drive in Rwanda, abide by the traffic laws, avoid military quarters and do not be rude to the locals. This will guarantee you a very safe self drive trip.
