When you land in Kigali, you have three ways to leave the airport: a Kigali airport taxi from the rank, a pre-booked transfer, or a rental car handed over at arrivals. Each has a different cost, and the cheapest choice depends on what you do next. This guide compares them and shows how to keep the first leg of your trip low-cost.
Your three options at Kigali International Airport
Kigali International Airport sits in Kanombe, roughly 10 km east of the city centre. Most central hotels are a 20 to 30 minute drive away, depending on traffic. So the airport run itself is short; what you do afterwards decides the best value.

1. A taxi from the rank
Taxis wait outside the terminal. You agree a fare with the driver and go. This works if you travel light and only need a ride to a Kigali hotel. However, prices are negotiated on the spot, and late at night there may be fewer cars.
If you take a rank taxi, ask an airport information desk or your hotel what a fair fare is before you step outside. Agree the price and the currency clearly before loading bags. Rwandan francs or mobile money are easiest, and small notes help, since drivers may not carry change for large bills.
2. A pre-booked transfer
A driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and takes you to your hotel. The price is fixed in advance, so there is no bargaining after a long flight. It suits families, late arrivals and anyone with lots of luggage. See our Kigali airport transfers service.
3. A rental car delivered to arrivals
If you plan to drive for several days, collect your rental right at the airport. You skip the taxi completely and drive straight to your hotel or onward to a park.
Kigali airport taxi or rental car: which costs less?
For a single ride into town, a taxi or transfer is usually cheapest. Once you add more journeys, the maths changes quickly.
| Your plan | Usually the best value |
|---|---|
| One night in Kigali, then a tour with transport included | Taxi or pre-booked transfer |
| Several days in Kigali with meetings across town | Rental car or a car with driver by the day |
| Heading straight to Volcanoes, Akagera or Lake Kivu | Rental 4×4 collected at the airport |
| Family of four or more with big bags | Transfer in a larger vehicle, or an SUV rental |
The reason is simple. A taxi charges for every trip, while a rental has one daily rate. If you would take three or four taxis a day, a rental often costs the same or less, and gives you more freedom.
Driving north straight from the airport
Many visitors land and head directly to Musanze for gorilla trekking. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on good tarmac, climbing through hills toward the Virunga volcanoes. A taxi is not designed for this trip, but a rental 4×4 is.
Tips for the drive to Musanze
- If you land in the afternoon, consider a night in Kigali and leave in the morning. Driving rural roads in the dark is best avoided.
- Rwanda drives on the right. Take it slowly through Kigali’s roundabouts before you reach the open road.
- Fill up before leaving Kigali, then again in Musanze.
- Gorilla treks start early from Kinigi, so sleep near the park the night before. Permits cost US$1,500 and are booked through RDB.
A Land Cruiser Prado handles the hills and the rougher trailhead tracks with ease.
How to rent a car at low cost from the airport
A low price comes from matching the car to the trip, not from picking the smallest car. These steps keep the total down.
- Book ahead. Airport delivery is easier to arrange, and better cars are available, when you book weeks in advance.
- Pick the right size. A RAV4 is cheaper to run than a Land Cruiser and fine for tarmac trips. Choose a bigger 4×4 only if your route needs it.
- Ask what airport delivery costs. Some quotes include it; others add a fee for late-night handovers. Confirm in your quote.
- Consider longer rentals. Weekly rates often work out cheaper per day than short hires.
- Return at the airport. Dropping the car at departures saves a final taxi fare.

Late-night arrivals: Kigali airport taxi or pre-arranged pickup?
Many international flights reach Kigali late in the evening. A pre-arranged pickup is worth it here, because you will not want to bargain or search for a car at midnight. Send your flight number, and the driver adjusts if the flight is delayed.
If you travel with young children, ask for child seats when you book. Taxis rarely carry them. Also tell us how many bags you have, so we send a vehicle with enough space.
Chauffeur instead of self-drive
If you are tired after a long flight, a driver can take you to your hotel and collect you the next morning. Then you can either keep the driver or switch to self-drive. See car hire with driver for details.
Business visitors arriving in Kigali
For conferences and meetings, a smart car waiting at arrivals sets the right tone. A Land Cruiser TXL or V8 with a driver gets you to meetings on time while you check emails. Kigali traffic is calm, but parking near some venues is limited, so a driver who drops you at the door helps. Our VIP car hire page covers this service.
FAQ
How long is the ride from Kigali airport to the city centre?
Usually 20 to 30 minutes, longer at rush hour.
Can I collect a self-drive car at the airport at night?
Yes, with advance notice. Share your flight number so the handover is ready when you land.
Is a taxi cheaper than a rental for a three-day stay?
Only if you make few trips. With several journeys a day, a rental or a car with driver often costs about the same.
Can I drop the rental at the airport when I leave?
Yes. Agree the return time in advance and allow time for a joint inspection before check-in.
