Kigali cash car rental options welcoming major currency notes

Many visitors prefer to pay for their rental in cash, especially in US dollars. That’s possible in Kigali, but the rules around banknotes catch travellers out every week. This guide to Kigali cash car rental explains which currencies work, what condition your notes must be in and how to handle deposits, fuel and change safely.

Which Currencies You Can Use

The Rwandan franc (RWF) is the local currency, and everyday purchases are priced in it. However, many tourism businesses, including car hire firms, also quote and accept US dollars. Euros and British pounds are widely exchanged at banks and forex bureaus in Kigali.

A simple rule of thumb

  • US dollars: the easiest foreign currency for rental payments.
  • Euros and pounds: usually best exchanged into dollars or francs first.
  • Rwandan francs: essential for fuel, parking, snacks and small fees.

Always confirm in writing which currency your quote is in. Then you won’t face a surprise exchange rate at handover.

Banknote Condition Matters More Than You Think

This is the biggest cash trap in Rwanda. Banks, forex bureaus and businesses are strict about foreign notes. A torn, marked or very old bill may simply be refused.

Bring notes that are

  • Clean, crisp and unfolded where possible
  • Free of writing, stamps or tears
  • From recent print series, since older designs are often rejected
  • In larger denominations, such as US$50 and US$100, which often get better rates

Order fresh notes from your bank at home before you fly. Also, carry them flat in an envelope rather than folded in a wallet.

How Kigali Cash Car Rental Payments Usually Work

Cash is perfectly normal for car hire in Rwanda, but it should still come with paperwork. Here’s the usual sequence.

  1. Quote: you receive a written, itemised price in a stated currency.
  2. Booking payment: often sent ahead by bank transfer or another agreed method to secure the car.
  3. Balance: paid in cash at handover, at the airport or your hotel.
  4. Receipt: you get a signed receipt showing the amount and currency.
  5. Deposit: a refundable security deposit may be taken, and its return terms are written in the agreement.

Never hand over cash without a receipt. And count notes together at handover, so there’s no confusion later.

Security deposits in cash

If you pay a deposit in cash, ask how and when it will be returned. Usually, it’s refunded when the car comes back in the same condition. Keep your copy of the inspection photos, because they protect both sides.

Exchanging Money in Kigali

You’ll need francs for daily driving costs. Fortunately, exchanging money in Kigali is easy.

  • Forex bureaus: found in the city centre and shopping areas, often with good rates.
  • Banks: reliable but slower, with fixed opening hours.
  • ATMs: widely available in Kigali and larger towns, giving francs directly.
  • Airport: convenient for a small first amount, though rates may be lower.

Outside Kigali, exchange options thin out. So change enough for your trip before you head to Akagera, Nyungwe or the volcanoes.

Cash on the Road: Fuel and Daily Costs

Once you’re driving, most costs are in Rwandan francs. Fuel stations in towns usually accept cash, and many accept cards or mobile money. However, rural stations may be cash-only.

Typical cash expenses

  • Fuel top-ups between towns
  • City street parking, often paid by mobile money
  • Roadside fruit, snacks and drinks
  • Tips for guides, porters and lodge staff
  • Small community entrance or activity fees

Park entry and activity fees are set by RDB and often paid in advance or by card. The gorilla permit is US$1,500 per person, so arrange that long before you travel.

Keeping Cash Safe While You Travel

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa. Still, carrying rental money needs care.

  • Split cash between two or three places, such as a money belt and a locked bag.
  • Use the hotel safe for large amounts.
  • Don’t count big sums in public.
  • Never leave cash visible in a parked car.
  • Keep receipts together in one envelope.

Also, think about a mix of payment methods. For example, pay the rental balance in cash, but use a card for lodges and park fees. That way, you carry less money at any one time.

Cash, Card or Transfer: Which Should You Choose?

Many travellers combine methods: a transfer to book, then cash for the balance. Ask us which options apply to your rental. For budget tips, see our cheap car rental page.

Choosing a Car With Your Budget in Mind

Knowing your total cash budget helps you pick the right vehicle. A Toyota RAV4 costs less to hire and fuel for tarmac trips. A Land Cruiser Safari costs more but suits game drives and rougher tracks. For longer stays, long-term car hire spreads the cost.

Cash Rental FAQ

Can I pay the whole rental in cash on arrival?

Often, yes, though a booking payment is usually needed in advance to hold the car. Confirm the split when you book.

Will you accept euros or pounds?

Ask first. In many cases, it’s simpler to exchange them into dollars or francs at a Kigali forex bureau.

What happens if a note is rejected?

You’ll need to replace it with another note or pay the difference another way. Bringing a few spare clean notes avoids this.

Will I get change in dollars?

Change is often given in francs. Bring a mix of denominations to pay as close to the exact amount as possible.

Do I pay a driver-guide in cash?

The driver’s daily fee is normally included in your rental quote. Tips are separate and usually given in cash at the end of the trip, in francs or dollars. If the quote leaves the driver’s meals or lodging to you, ask how they should be paid.
