Kigali international airport car rental hubs positioned near gates

The easiest start to a Rwanda trip is a car waiting for you the moment you clear arrivals. A Kigali International Airport car rental lets you skip taxis and transfers and drive straight to your hotel or the first park. Here is exactly how pickup works at the terminal, what to have ready and how to plan your return for the flight home.

How Kigali International Airport Car Rental Pickup Works

Kigali International Airport sits in Kanombe, east of the city centre, roughly 30 minutes’ drive in normal traffic. It is a compact airport, so you’ll be out of the terminal quickly once your bags arrive.

With us, a team member meets you in the arrivals area with a name board. Then you walk together to the car park, where the vehicle is waiting. The handover happens there: paperwork, a walk-around check and a short briefing on the car.

Step by step

  1. Share your flight number when you book, so we can track delays.
  2. Clear immigration and collect your luggage.
  3. Look for your name board as you exit into arrivals.
  4. Walk to the car park for the vehicle handover.
  5. Sign the rental agreement and check the car together.
  6. Drive off, or ride with your driver if you booked one.

Documents to Have Ready at Arrivals

Keep these in your hand luggage, not in a checked bag. That way the handover takes minutes rather than half an hour.

  • Your passport.
  • A valid driving licence for self-drive hires.
  • An International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English or French.
  • Your booking confirmation, on paper or on your phone.
  • The card or payment method agreed for any balance or deposit.

If several people will drive, bring each driver’s licence so they can be added to the agreement.

Sorting Phone, Cash and Maps Before You Drive

A few minutes in the terminal makes your first day much easier. First, buy a local SIM card with data, so you can use maps and call us if needed. Mobile operators usually have counters or agents at the airport.

Next, withdraw some Rwandan francs. Cards work in many Kigali hotels and supermarkets, but fuel stations and small shops upcountry often prefer cash or mobile money. Finally, download offline maps of Rwanda while you are still on airport Wi-Fi. That way you have navigation even where signal drops in the hills.

Checking the Car Before You Leave the Airport

After a long flight, it is tempting to grab the keys and go. Still, a careful check now protects you later.

What to look at

  • Photograph all four sides, the windscreen and the wheels.
  • Check the spare tyre, jack and warning triangle are in the car.
  • Note the fuel level and the mileage.
  • Test lights, wipers, air conditioning and the horn.
  • If you booked extras, such as camping gear or child seats, confirm they are all there.

Ask the right questions

Ask who to call in a breakdown and save the number in your phone. Confirm the fuel policy, too. Finally, ask the handover person to show you how to engage 4WD if your car has it.

Your First Drive Out of the Airport

Rwanda drives on the right. Roads near the airport are good and well marked, so the first drive is a gentle introduction. Watch for motorbike taxis, which weave between cars, and keep to the speed limits; cameras and police checks are common.

Where you can go from the airport

DestinationApproximate drive
Kigali city centreAbout 30 minutes
Akagera gateAbout 2.5 hours
Musanze / Volcanoes2–2.5 hours (plus city traffic)
Rubavu (Lake Kivu)3–3.5 hours

Since the airport sits east of Kigali, heading straight to Akagera works well on arrival day. On the other hand, if you land in the afternoon, stay in Kigali first. Driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads is best avoided.

Self-Drive or a Driver for the Airport Run?

Some travellers prefer not to drive straight after a long-haul flight. In that case, a driver can collect you, take you to your hotel and hand over the car the next morning.

Alternatively, book a driver for the whole trip. A car hire with driver means someone else handles the airport, the city and the long park drives. If you’d simply like a ride into town, our Kigali airport transfers are a simpler option.

Returning the Car for Your Departure

Plan your return carefully, because a missed flight costs far more than an extra hour of hire.

  • Arrive at the airport at least three hours before an international flight.
  • Expect a security check as you drive into the airport grounds; allow time for it.
  • Refuel in Kigali before you head out, if your agreement is full-to-full.
  • Remove rubbish and check under seats for chargers and passports.
  • Do a final walk-around with our team member and get a signed return note.

If you’d rather not drive on your last day, we can collect the car from your hotel and drive you to the terminal instead. This option suits travellers with early morning flights or a lot of luggage, and it lets you enjoy a relaxed last evening in Kigali.

Choosing a Vehicle for an Airport Start

The right car depends on where you go after landing. For Kigali and paved roads, a Toyota RAV4 is light and economical. For parks, camping and rough tracks, a Land Cruiser is the better fit. Browse our fleet to compare models before you book.

Kigali International Airport Car Rental FAQs

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track your flight number, so the team adjusts to the new arrival time. Just make sure the number in your booking is correct.

Can I collect the car for a late-night arrival?

Yes, airport handovers can be arranged for late flights. Confirm this when booking, as out-of-hours delivery may carry a fee.

Can I return the car at the airport after a cross-border trip?

Usually yes. Tell us your full route so we can prepare the border documents and plan the return.

Is there a rental desk inside the terminal?

We meet you personally in arrivals with a name board rather than at a desk, then hand over the car in the car park.
