Driving from Kigali to the Serengeti is one of East Africa’s great overland trips. It crosses a border, switches you to the left side of the road and ends in one of the world’s most famous wildlife parks. A Kigali to Serengeti car hire needs more preparation than a Rwanda-only rental, both in paperwork and in how the vehicle is set up. This guide covers both.
The Route From Kigali to the Serengeti
Most travellers leave Rwanda at the Rusumo border in the south-east. The road runs past the edge of Akagera and reaches the border at the Rusumo Falls bridge. From there, you continue through north-western Tanzania toward Lake Victoria and the Serengeti’s western side.
How long does it take?
This is a long drive, not a day trip. Plan at least two full driving days each way between Kigali and the Serengeti’s western gate. Border formalities, slower roads and town traffic all add time. An overnight stop on the Tanzanian side breaks the journey well.
Left-hand traffic after the border
Rwanda drives on the right. Tanzania drives on the left. The switch happens at Rusumo, so slow down after the border and take extra care at the first junctions and roundabouts.

Paperwork for Kigali to Serengeti Car Hire
The vehicle needs its own documents to leave Rwanda. We prepare these for you, but only with notice. Ask at the time of booking, not the day before.
- COMESA Yellow Card: regional third-party insurance that covers you in Tanzania.
- Owner’s authorisation letter: proves you’re allowed to take the car across the border.
- Vehicle registration papers: a certified copy travels with the car.
- Temporary import permit: issued at the Tanzanian border for the vehicle.
Your personal documents
- Passport with a valid Tanzania visa or e-visa
- Driving licence plus International Driving Permit
- Yellow fever certificate, which border officials may ask to see

How the Vehicle Should Be Configured
The Serengeti is huge, and services inside it are spread thin. A car that’s fine for a week in Rwanda may not be ready for this trip. Here’s how a Serengeti-ready 4×4 should be set up.
The base vehicle
A Toyota Land Cruiser Safari or TXL is the right choice. They have the clearance, suspension and fuel range for long gravel stretches. Parts and mechanics for Land Cruisers are also easy to find across Tanzania.
Essential add-ons
- Pop-up roof for game viewing on the open plains.
- Two spare tyres. Serengeti tracks are hard on tyres.
- Extra fuel capacity, such as a long-range tank or approved jerrycans.
- Fridge or cool box for water and food on long days.
- Basic recovery kit: tow strap, shovel and tyre pump.
Camping or lodges?
Serengeti lodges can be expensive. A rooftop tent lets you use public campsites inside the park instead. Our car rental with camping gear package includes the tent, bedding and cooking kit.
Crossing at Rusumo: What to Expect
Rusumo is a one-stop border post, so Rwandan and Tanzanian officials work in the same area. Even so, allow time for immigration, customs and vehicle checks.
- Clear immigration for all passengers.
- Present the vehicle papers at customs and get the temporary import permit.
- Show the COMESA Yellow Card if asked.
- Change a little money into Tanzanian shillings for fuel and snacks.
Arrive in the morning if you can. Crossings are usually calmer then, and you’ll have daylight for the drive beyond.
A Sample Kigali to Serengeti Car Hire Itinerary
- Day 1: Kigali to Akagera for an afternoon game drive.
- Day 2: Cross at Rusumo and drive to an overnight stop in north-western Tanzania.
- Day 3: Continue to the Serengeti’s western gate.
- Days 4–6: Game drives in the western corridor and central Serengeti.
- Days 7–8: Drive back toward Rusumo and Kigali.
Add extra days if you can. More time in the park makes the long drive worthwhile.
Park Fees and Rules in the Serengeti
Tanzania National Parks sets entry, camping and vehicle fees. Foreign-registered vehicles are charged differently from local ones, so budget for that. Fees change, so check the current rates before you travel.
- Pay fees at the gate or in advance, as instructed by the park.
- Stay on designated tracks. Off-road driving is restricted.
- Follow gate opening and closing times strictly.
- Camp only at designated sites.
When to Go for the Best Wildlife
The Serengeti is good all year, but the wildebeest migration moves around. Around the middle of the year, herds often pass through the western corridor. That’s the area closest to the route from Rwanda, which makes timing especially rewarding for this trip.
In the long rains, gravel roads on the Tanzanian side can be very muddy. Allow more time, and keep the 4WD engaged on slippery stretches. Dry months are easier on the vehicle and on you.
Self-Drive or Driver for This Trip?
Self-drive suits experienced drivers who are comfortable with long distances, left-hand traffic and border paperwork. It gives you full freedom inside the park.
However, many travellers choose a driver for this route. A driver who knows the border crossings, Tanzanian roads and Serengeti tracks removes much of the stress. See our car hire with driver option.
Combine it with Akagera
The road to Rusumo passes close to Akagera National Park. Spending a night there on the way out is a great warm-up for the Serengeti.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much notice do you need for the cross-border papers?
Give us as much notice as possible, ideally at booking. Some documents take a few working days to prepare.
Can I return the car in Tanzania?
It’s sometimes possible, but there’s usually a significant repatriation fee. Most travellers do a return trip to Kigali.
Is a RAV4 suitable for the Serengeti?
We don’t recommend it. Long gravel distances and heavy loads need a Land Cruiser.
Where can I get fuel on the way?
Fill up in Kigali and in larger Tanzanian towns along the route. Fuel inside the Serengeti is limited and costly.
