Kigali Weekend Road Trip Guide with SUV Rental in Rwanda

Living in Kigali or passing through on business, you often have just two days free. The good news is that a Kigali weekend road trip can take you to a lake beach, volcano country or a savannah park and back by Sunday night. Here are five tried-and-tested weekend routes, plus tips on choosing an SUV and timing your drive.

Kigali Weekend Road Trip Guide with SUV Rental in Rwanda

How to Plan a Kigali Weekend Road Trip

Weekend trips work best when you keep driving time short. As a rule, aim for no more than 3–3.5 hours each way. That leaves time to actually enjoy where you are going.

Collect your SUV on Friday afternoon, so you can leave early on Saturday. Alternatively, drive out on Friday evening if your destination is close. Also, watch the calendar: on the last Saturday of the month, Umuganda community work stops most traffic in the morning.

Which SUV for a weekend away?

For tarmac routes to Lake Kivu or Musanze, a Toyota RAV4 is comfortable and easy on fuel. For Akagera or rough lake-shore tracks, choose a Prado or Land Cruiser. You can compare options on our SUV car rental Kigali page.

Route 1: Lake Kivu Beach Weekend in Rubavu

Drive time: about 3–3.5 hours each way.

Rubavu sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, with sandy beaches, lakeside cafés and warm evenings. Leave Kigali early on Saturday, and you can be on the beach by lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat out to the islands or walk along the shore promenade.

On Sunday morning, visit a local coffee washing station or the hot springs near Lake Kivu, then head home after lunch. See our Lake Kivu guide for more ideas.

Route 2: Twin Lakes and Volcano Views Near Musanze

Drive time: about 2–2.5 hours each way.

This is the easiest weekend escape from Kigali. The road climbs through terraced hills to Musanze, with the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon. Nearby, the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer quiet viewpoints and boat rides.

If you can get a permit, add golden monkey trekking or a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda’s gorilla permit costs US$1,500, so most weekenders choose a cave visit or a hike instead.

Route 3: Akagera Overnight Safari

Drive time: about 2.5 hours to the gate.

For a wildlife weekend, head east to Akagera. Leave Kigali on Saturday morning, do an afternoon game drive and sleep inside or near the park. On Sunday, start at dawn and drive north through the plains before exiting.

A high-clearance 4×4 is important here, especially after rain. Read more on our Akagera National Park page.

Route 4: Karongi and the Quiet Side of Lake Kivu

Drive time: about 3 hours each way.

Karongi, also known as Kibuye, is calmer than Rubavu. The road winds through hills before dropping to the lake, with bays and islands below. Spend Saturday kayaking or swimming, and catch the sunset from a lakeside terrace.

The views are dramatic, but the road has many curves. So drive steadily and avoid the return in the dark.

Route 5: Royal History in Nyanza and Huye

Drive time: about 2 hours to Nyanza, a little more to Huye.

For a culture-focused weekend, drive south to Nyanza and visit the restored King’s Palace. Continue to Huye, home of the national university and the Ethnographic Museum. Both towns have a relaxed pace and good local restaurants.

This route is all tarmac, so any SUV works. It also suits rainy-season weekends, when park tracks can be muddy.

A Sample Friday-to-Sunday Schedule

Whichever route you pick, a similar rhythm works well. Here is how a relaxed weekend might look.

  1. Friday, 5:00 pm: collect the SUV at home or the office, load bags and fill the tank.
  2. Saturday, 6:30 am: leave Kigali before traffic builds, with breakfast on the road.
  3. Saturday, late morning: arrive, check in and head out for the main activity.
  4. Saturday evening: dinner at the lodge, with the car parked in a secure compound.
  5. Sunday morning: a short walk, boat trip or game drive while it is cool.
  6. Sunday, 1:00 pm: lunch, then start the drive home to arrive before dark.

This timing keeps you off the roads at night and avoids a rushed Sunday. As a result, you get back to Kigali rested rather than exhausted.

Weekend Road-Trip Tips

  • Book lodges early for public holidays and long weekends.
  • Fill up before leaving Kigali; fuel is easy to find in district towns.
  • Carry cash and mobile money for parking, snacks and small entry fees.
  • Plan to be back on the main road before dark on Sunday.
  • Keep a light jacket in the car, since Musanze and the hills get cool.
  • Remember that Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common.

Self-drive or with a driver?

Most weekend routes are easy self-drives. However, if you would rather relax with a book on the winding Karongi road, a driver is worth considering. Our road trips in Rwanda page explains both options.

FAQ: Weekend Trips From Kigali

Can I rent an SUV for just Saturday and Sunday?

Yes. Many renters collect on Friday evening and return on Sunday night or Monday morning. Ask about pickup and return times when you book.

Is Nyungwe possible in a weekend?

Nyungwe is about 5–6 hours away, so it is tight. It works better as a three-day long weekend.

Which weekend route is best in the rainy season?

Nyanza and Huye, or Musanze, are mostly on tarmac. Akagera’s tracks can get muddy, so take a Land Cruiser if you go.
