Moving house in Kigali, shifting an office, or carrying equipment to a field site? Before you book a moving truck Rwanda movers would charge by the load, check whether a utility vehicle you drive yourself would do the job. This guide explains which of our vehicles suit local relocation, how to plan the move, and what to watch for on Rwanda’s hilly roads.

Do You Need a Moving Truck in Rwanda, or a Utility Vehicle?
Many local moves are smaller than people expect. A one-bedroom apartment, a student room or a small office often fits into two or three trips with a pickup or van. That costs less than a large truck and gives you full control over timing.
However, a full family house with heavy wardrobes, beds and appliances is different. In that case, a dedicated removal company with a large truck and loading crew may be the better choice. We are happy to tell you honestly which option fits your load.
When a utility vehicle makes sense
- You are moving within Kigali or to a nearby town.
- Your load is boxes, small furniture, electronics and bags.
- You have friends or staff to help with loading.
- You want to spread the move over a day or two.
- You also need the vehicle for errands, shopping or a weekend trip after the move.
When to call a removal company instead
- You are moving a whole furnished house in one go.
- You have pianos, large safes or industrial machines.
- You need packing, wrapping and insurance for each item.
Our Utility Vehicles for Local Relocation
We don’t run heavy lorries. Instead, we offer tough Toyota vehicles that handle most household and office moves well. Here is how they compare for moving jobs.
| Vehicle | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Hilux Double Cab | Furniture, appliances, building materials | Open load bed plus five seats; bring ropes and a tarpaulin |
| Toyota Hiace | Boxes, office equipment, electronics | Enclosed and dry; seats can carry the helpers too |
| Toyota Land Cruiser TXL | Field equipment to remote sites | Strong on rough tracks and steep hills |
| Toyota RAV4 | Small moves and city errands | Economical; good for bags and small boxes |
The Hilux: an open pickup for bulky items
The Hilux Double Cab is the closest thing to a small moving truck in our fleet. Its load bed takes a sofa, a mattress or a fridge standing upright. Also, the cab seats your helpers, so you don’t need a second car.
Because the bed is open, rain is the main risk. Kigali showers can arrive fast, especially in the wet seasons. So cover everything with a tarpaulin and tie it down firmly.
The Hiace: an enclosed van for fragile loads
The Hiace keeps boxes dry and out of sight. That makes it ideal for office moves with computers, files and printers. For example, an NGO moving to a new office can shift desks in the Hilux and IT equipment in the Hiace on the same day.
Planning Your Move Step by Step
A good plan saves you a second day of hire. Here is a simple order that works for most local moves.
- List your big items. Measure sofas, beds and wardrobes. This tells you whether a pickup or van fits.
- Choose your date. Weekdays mid-morning have lighter traffic than evenings. Avoid the monthly Umuganda Saturday morning, when most activity pauses.
- Book the vehicle early. Pickups and vans are popular with businesses, so reserve a few days ahead.
- Pack before the vehicle arrives. Every hour spent packing is an hour of hire time lost.
- Load heavy items first. Put them against the cab, then fill gaps with boxes and soft bags.
- Do a final walk-through. Check cupboards and balconies before you lock up.
Self-drive or with a driver?
You can drive yourself if you hold a valid licence and feel at ease on steep, busy streets. Many residents do. However, a loaded pickup feels very different on Kigali’s hills.
So if you are new to the city, consider our car hire with a driver. A local driver knows the narrow lanes, the steep estates and the best parking spots near apartment blocks. Meanwhile, you can focus on supervising the loading.
Driving a Loaded Vehicle in Kigali and Beyond
Rwanda drives on the right, and roads in Kigali are well paved and orderly. Even so, a heavy load changes how a vehicle brakes and corners. Keep these points in mind.
- Brake earlier. Downhill stretches are long in Kigali. Use a lower gear rather than riding the brakes.
- Respect speed limits. Speed cameras are common, and fines are sent to the vehicle owner.
- Watch for motorbikes. Moto taxis weave through traffic, so check mirrors often.
- Check the load at each stop. Straps loosen on bumpy roads.
- Don’t overload. An overloaded pickup is unsafe and can lead to police fines.
Moving outside Kigali
Some clients relocate to Musanze, Rubavu or Huye. Main highways are tarmac, but the final stretch to a house or project site may be dirt. Plan for realistic drive times: Kigali to Musanze takes about 2–2.5 hours, and Kigali to Rubavu about 3–3.5 hours. Add extra time when the vehicle is loaded.
For remote project sites, a Land Cruiser is often the safer choice. It copes with mud in the rainy season and steep gravel tracks in the hills.
Moving Truck Rwanda Options for NGOs and Businesses
Organisations often need transport for more than one day. For example, a research team may move equipment to a new district, then use the same vehicle for field visits for weeks. In that case, a longer rental is usually more practical than repeated one-day hires.
Our long and short term car hire covers this. Monthly rentals also include servicing, so the vehicle stays reliable. If you need several vehicles, we can mix pickups, vans and Land Cruisers in one agreement.
Event and project logistics
Utility vehicles are also handy for events. Caterers, conference teams and film crews use them to carry staging, cameras and supplies. Meanwhile, guests can travel in comfortable SUVs or Land Cruisers.
Lodges and camps in the parks sometimes need supplies moved too. For trips near Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe or Akagera, a 4×4 handles the access roads far better than a city van.
Combining Your Move With Other Travel
Many people relocating to Rwanda are new arrivals. So they often need an airport pickup, a few days of city driving and then a vehicle for the move itself. You can arrange all of this with one company.
- Start with a Kigali airport transfer when you land with your suitcases.
- Rent a compact SUV for house hunting and paperwork.
- Switch to a Hilux or Hiace for moving day.
- Later, take a weekend 4×4 trip to Lake Kivu or Akagera once you’re settled.
This approach means one contact person, one set of paperwork and fewer surprises.
What to bring on moving day
- Ropes or ratchet straps and a large tarpaulin.
- Old blankets to protect furniture and the vehicle.
- Tape, markers and a few spare boxes.
- Drinking water and snacks for your helpers.
- Your driving licence and the rental agreement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you rent large moving trucks or lorries?
No. We rent pickups, vans and 4x4s that suit small and medium moves. For a whole house in one trip, a removal company with a large truck may serve you better, and we can advise you.
Can I take the Hilux outside Kigali for a move?
Yes. You can drive anywhere in Rwanda. Just tell us your route so we can confirm the vehicle suits the roads and the load.
What documents do I need to rent a utility vehicle?
You need a valid driving licence and your passport or Rwandan ID. Foreign licences are generally accepted for visitors; residents should check current rules for converting a licence.
Can you provide a driver for moving day?
Yes. A driver knows Kigali’s streets and parking, which saves time when the vehicle is loaded. Loading crews are not included, so arrange your own helpers.
