Nyungwe Forest Travel Guide with Car Rental Options for Tourists

Nyungwe is one of Africa’s great mountain rainforests, home to chimpanzees, a dozen other primate species and hundreds of bird species. It sits in Rwanda’s far south-west, so good Nyungwe Forest travel planning starts with how you’ll get there and move around. This guide covers what to do in the forest, how long to stay, where to base yourself and which car rental option suits your style.

What Makes Nyungwe Forest Travel Special

Unlike Akagera’s open plains, Nyungwe is all about the forest. Mist hangs in deep valleys, giant tree ferns line the trails and monkeys crash through the canopy above the road. It feels wild, even though a paved road runs straight through it.

Most visitors come for primates, especially chimpanzees. However, the forest rewards anyone who likes walking, birding or simply cool mountain air after hot days elsewhere.

Top Things to Do in Nyungwe

Chimpanzee tracking

The highlight for most visitors. Treks start very early, and the meeting point depends on where the chimps are. Some groups are tracked in the main forest; others in the smaller Cyamudongo forest to the west. Book ahead, as numbers are limited.

The canopy walkway

A suspended walkway near the Uwinka visitor centre lets you walk among the treetops. Views across the forest are superb on a clear morning. It’s a guided activity, so book a time slot.

Forest trails and waterfalls

Marked trails range from short loops to full-day hikes. The Isumo waterfall trail, starting near Gisakura, is a popular half-day walk through tea and forest.

Birding and monkeys

Nyungwe is a top birding area, with many Albertine Rift species found in few other places. You’ll also see colobus and other monkeys, sometimes right beside the road.

Activity fees are set by RDB and change from time to time, so check current rates when booking. Our Nyungwe National Park page has more detail on each activity.

How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself

Two nights is the sensible minimum. The drive from Kigali takes 5–6 hours, so the first day is mostly travel. Three nights lets you do chimps, the canopy walk and a forest hike without rushing.

Choosing a base

  • Gisakura side (west): near tea estates and the Isumo trail. Convenient for Cyamudongo chimps and onward travel to Lake Kivu.
  • Uwinka area (centre): close to the canopy walkway and main trailheads.
  • Kitabi side (east): first area you reach from Kigali, handy for a late arrival.

Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to high-end lodges, plus some camping. Because the forest is large, staying close to your first morning activity saves an early drive in the dark.

A Sample Three-Night Nyungwe Plan

Here’s an easy rhythm that fits the main highlights without rushing. Adjust it to your chimp tracking date.

Day one: arrive

Leave Kigali in the morning and break the drive with lunch on the way. Arrive at your lodge by mid-afternoon, then enjoy a short walk or tea on the terrace.

Day two: chimps and canopy

Rise very early for chimp tracking. Back by late morning, rest over lunch, then drive to Uwinka for the canopy walkway in the afternoon.

Day three: trails and tea

Hike the Isumo waterfall trail or a longer forest route. In the afternoon, stroll through the tea estates near Gisakura and watch pickers at work.

Day four: move on

Head north to Lake Kivu, or begin the drive back to Kigali. Either way, set off early to avoid finishing in the dark.

Car Rental Options for Nyungwe Forest Travel

There’s no public transport that suits a forest itinerary, so a vehicle is essential. The question is what kind, and who drives.

OptionGood forThings to know
Self-drive 4×4Independent travellersFreedom to stop; long drive on winding roads
Car with driverRelaxed visitors, first-timersDriver knows the route and trailhead timings
Rooftop tent 4×4Campers on a budgetBook campsites in advance
Minivan with driverGroups and familiesComfortable on paved roads

Which vehicle?

The main road through the park is paved. However, the approach to some trailheads, campsites and Cyamudongo is rougher. A RAV4 manages the main road in dry weather. For rainy months or a longer loop, a Land Cruiser Prado or full Land Cruiser is the safer choice.

If you’d rather not drive mountain roads, choose car hire with a driver. Your driver handles the early starts and knows where each activity begins.

Combining Nyungwe With the Rest of Rwanda

Nyungwe works well as part of a longer loop. Many travellers link it with Lake Kivu, driving north along the shore to Karongi and Rubavu. Others pair it with Volcanoes National Park for a gorillas-and-chimps trip.

If you add gorillas, remember the permit costs US$1,500 and must be booked for a fixed date. Plan Nyungwe around that day. Our 5-day chimps and gorillas trip shows one way to combine them.

Best Time to Visit and What to Pack

Nyungwe is a rainforest, so expect rain in any month. The drier seasons, June to August and December to February, make trails less muddy. In the wetter months, the forest is lush and quiet, but hiking is slippery.

  • Waterproof jacket and quick-dry trousers.
  • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
  • Warm layers; mornings at altitude are chilly.
  • Gloves for chimp tracking through thick vegetation.
  • Binoculars for birds and monkeys.

Keep a dry change of clothes in the car. After a muddy morning on the trails, you’ll be glad of it before the next drive. Also bring a small daypack with water and snacks, as treks can run longer than planned.

FAQ: Visiting Nyungwe Forest

Can I visit Nyungwe as a day trip from Kigali?

Not realistically. The drive is 5–6 hours each way, so stay at least two nights.

Is chimp tracking guaranteed?

No. Sightings are common, but chimps move fast through the forest. The canopy walk and trails make the trip worthwhile regardless.

Do I need a 4×4 for Nyungwe?

Not for the main road in dry weather. A 4×4 is better for rain, rough trailhead roads and the Cyamudongo trip.

Can children do the canopy walk?

Age limits apply to some activities and can change. Check with the park when booking.
