Five days is enough to see Rwanda’s two big wildlife experiences: savannah game in Akagera and mountain gorillas in the volcanoes. With your own rental car, you can link them without joining a group tour. This 5 day Rwanda safari itinerary gives you a realistic day-by-day plan, honest drive times and the practical details that make it work.
The 5 day Rwanda safari itinerary at a glance
| Day | Route | Drive time | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kigali → Akagera | About 2.5 hours | Kigali Genocide Memorial, afternoon game drive |
| 2 | Akagera → Kigali | About 2.5 hours | Dawn game drive, Lake Ihema boat trip |
| 3 | Kigali → Musanze | 2–2.5 hours | Twin lakes or Musanze caves |
| 4 | Musanze | Short local drives | Gorilla trekking |
| 5 | Musanze → Kigali | 2–2.5 hours | Golden monkeys or a slow drive home |
The plan keeps every drive under three hours. That leaves time for wildlife, rest and the odd wrong turn.

Day-by-day plan
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera
Collect your car in the morning and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial first. It is a moving and important introduction to the country. Then drive east towards Rwamagana and Kayonza, fill the tank, and reach the Akagera gate in the early afternoon. A short game drive on the way to your lodge often brings first sightings of zebra, impala and buffalo.
Day 2: Akagera to Kigali
Start at dawn, when animals are most active and the light is soft. Spend the morning on the park’s tracks, then join a boat trip on Lake Ihema for hippos, crocodiles and water birds. After lunch, drive back to Kigali for a comfortable night in the city.
Day 3: Kigali to Musanze
Leave after the morning rush and head north-west into the hills. The road climbs through terraced farmland with views of the Virunga volcanoes. In the afternoon, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo or the Musanze caves. Then turn in early, because tomorrow starts before sunrise.
Before bed, pack your trekking bag with water, snacks, a rain jacket, gloves and your passport. Also check the route to Kinigi so the morning drive is simple.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking
Drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi for the early briefing. Rangers assign you to a gorilla family, and you follow your guide to the trailhead. After an hour with the gorillas, return to your lodge to rest. Permits cost US$1,500 per person and are issued by RDB.
Day 5: Musanze to Kigali
If you have energy and a permit, trek golden monkeys in the morning. Otherwise, enjoy a slow breakfast and drive back to Kigali. Return the car in the afternoon, or keep it for an evening drop-off at the airport.
Variations on the 5 day Rwanda safari itinerary
The classic route above suits most first-time visitors. However, you can swap parts to match your interests.
Lakes instead of savannah
Skip Akagera and add Lake Kivu. Drive from Musanze to Rubavu in about 1.5 hours and spend a day by the water. The drive back to Kigali takes 3–3.5 hours.
Primates instead of gorillas
If gorilla permits are sold out, consider Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk. Note that Nyungwe is 5–6 hours from Kigali, so it takes a whole day each way. Our Nyungwe National Park guide explains the options.
Driver-guided instead of self-drive
The same route works with a driver-guide, who handles timing and navigation. See our ready-made 5-day Rwanda gorilla safari for a guided version.
Which rental car suits this route?
The itinerary combines paved highways with park tracks and a steep trailhead road. So a proper 4×4 is the safest choice.
- Land Cruiser Safari: the best option, thanks to the pop-up roof for Akagera game drives.
- Land Cruiser Prado: comfortable for couples and small families, and capable on park tracks.
- Toyota RAV4: fine for the lakes variation, but less suited to Akagera or rough trailhead roads.

Practical tips for the five days
- Book permits first. Build the itinerary around your gorilla date.
- Fuel up before Akagera. There is no fuel station inside the park.
- Avoid night driving. Rural roads are busy with pedestrians after dark.
- Carry cash for porters, park extras and roadside snacks.
- Check the calendar. On the last Saturday of the month, Umuganda community work restricts traffic in the morning.
- Remember the road rules. Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common.
Budgeting the five days
A self-drive trip has more cost lines than a package tour, so list them early. That way, nothing surprises you on the road.
- Car hire: five days of rental, including insurance. Ask for a written quote for your exact dates.
- Fuel: the full loop covers several hundred kilometres, plus game drives inside Akagera.
- Park fees: Akagera entry, vehicle fees and the boat trip are set by the park and change over time.
- Permits: gorilla permits are the largest single cost at US$1,500 per person.
- Accommodation: one night in Akagera, one in Kigali and two near Musanze.
- Extras: porters, tips, meals and souvenirs.
To save money, travel in the shoulder months and share the car with friends. Also consider camping in Akagera instead of a lodge, using our camping gear option.
Itinerary FAQs
Is five days enough for gorillas and Akagera?
Yes. The drives are short, so you get a full day in each place without rushing.
Can I start the route straight from the airport?
Yes. The airport is on the east side of Kigali, so you can head to Akagera without crossing the city.
When is the best time to do this trip?
The dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, offer the easiest driving and trekking. Book early for those months.
Can I end the trip at the Uganda border instead?
Yes, with cross-border papers. The Gatuna/Katuna border is about 1.5 hours from Kigali, and Uganda drives on the left.
