One week is enough to see Rwanda’s savanna, volcanoes, lake and rainforest, as long as the route makes sense. This Rwanda 7 day safari itinerary is built for travellers with a rental 4×4, either self-drive or with a driver. It follows a loop that avoids backtracking and keeps every drive in daylight.
The Rwanda 7 Day Safari Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Route | Highlights | Approx. driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kigali | Arrival, city sights | Under 1 hour |
| 2 | Kigali → Akagera | Afternoon game drive, Lake Ihema | About 2.5 hours |
| 3 | Akagera → Musanze | Sunrise game drive | About 5 hours |
| 4 | Volcanoes National Park | Gorilla trekking | Short transfers |
| 5 | Musanze → Rubavu | Golden monkeys, Lake Kivu | About 1.5 hours |
| 6 | Rubavu → Nyungwe | Lake Kivu shoreline road | A full day with stops |
| 7 | Nyungwe → Kigali | Canopy walk, return | 5–6 hours |
The plan is full but realistic. If you’d prefer a gentler pace, add an extra night at Lake Kivu or Nyungwe.
Day 1: Arrive and Settle Into Kigali
Collect your vehicle at Kigali International Airport and check it carefully before driving off. Then head to your hotel, about 30 minutes away.
If you land early, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is essential for understanding modern Rwanda. In the evening, stock up at a supermarket on water, snacks and anything you’ll need for Akagera. Our airport pickup service can have the car waiting when you land.
Day 2: East to Akagera National Park
Leave Kigali after breakfast and drive east via Kayonza, about 2.5 hours to the park gate. Fill the tank in Kayonza, because fuel is limited near the park.
After paying park fees, spend the afternoon around the southern lakes. Look for hippos, buffalo and crocodiles, and consider a boat trip on Lake Ihema. Be at your lodge or campsite before dark.
Day 3: Sunrise Game Drive, Then West to Musanze
Head out at first light, when lions and other predators are most active. Spend two or three hours on the central plains, where giraffe and zebra gather.
Then exit the park and drive back through Kigali and north to Musanze. This is the longest driving day, about five hours in total, so leave the park by late morning. Sleep in Musanze or near Kinigi so you’re close to the park headquarters.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Report early to the Kinigi headquarters for the briefing and group allocation. Permits cost US$1,500 and must be booked well in advance, so secure yours before anything else in this plan.
After the briefing, follow your guide’s vehicle to the trailhead. Treks can take from one hour to most of the day, and you get one hour with the gorillas. Afterwards, rest at your lodge or visit a nearby community project. For more detail, see our Volcanoes National Park guide.
Day 5: Golden Monkeys and Lake Kivu
Spend the morning tracking golden monkeys in the bamboo zone of the volcanoes. It’s a shorter, easier trek than the gorillas, with plenty of action.
After lunch, drive west to Rubavu on Lake Kivu, roughly 1.5 hours. In the late afternoon, swim, take a boat out or simply watch the sunset from the shore. Rubavu also has fuel stations and supermarkets, so it’s a good place to restock before the long lakeside drive. For ideas, see our Lake Kivu guide.
Day 6: The Lake Kivu Road South to Nyungwe
Today you follow the winding road along Lake Kivu’s shore, through Karongi and on towards the Nyungwe area. Views of the lake, islands and terraced hills are superb. However, the road twists constantly, so the drive takes a full day with photo and lunch stops.
Start early, keep your speed down on bends and aim to arrive before dark. A 4×4 with good clearance is comfortable here, and essential if you stay at a lodge with an unpaved access road.
Day 7: Nyungwe Canopy Walk and Return to Kigali
Begin with the canopy walkway, suspended high above the rainforest. Go early, because you still have a 5–6 hour drive to Kigali via Huye.
If you’d rather track chimpanzees in Nyungwe, add an eighth day. Chimp treks start before dawn and can be long, so they don’t fit with a same-day drive to Kigali. Read more on our Nyungwe National Park page.
Which Vehicle Suits This Route?
This loop mixes good tarmac with park tracks and lodge access roads. A Land Cruiser Safari is ideal, especially in the rainy months. A Prado also works well for couples. A RAV4 is fine on paved roads, but it’s less comfortable on Akagera’s tracks.
Self-drive suits confident drivers. Rwanda drives on the right, roads are well signed and speed limits are enforced. Alternatively, book a driver-guide for the whole week, or just for the long Akagera-to-Musanze and Kivu days.
When to Drive This Loop
The long dry season from June to September is the most popular time. Tracks are firm, trekking trails are drier and wildlife gathers near water in Akagera. December to February is another good window.
In contrast, the rainy months bring lush scenery, fewer visitors and easier lodge availability. Expect afternoon downpours, slippery trails and slower driving, so build in extra time. A full-size 4×4 is strongly recommended then.
What to pack for the week
- Waterproof hiking boots and gaiters for gorillas, golden monkeys and Nyungwe.
- Warm layers for cold mornings in Musanze and Nyungwe.
- Binoculars and a long camera lens for Akagera.
- Swimwear for Lake Kivu.
- Cash in Rwandan francs for fuel and small purchases outside Kigali.
Keep trekking gear in a separate bag in the car, so it’s ready on the right mornings.
Rwanda 7 Day Safari Itinerary: FAQs
Can I reverse the loop?
Yes. Many travellers start with Nyungwe and finish in Akagera. Just make sure your gorilla permit date matches the day you reach Musanze.
Is seven days enough for chimps and gorillas?
It’s tight. To include chimpanzee trekking, add an extra night in Nyungwe or drop Akagera.
Can I camp instead of using lodges?
Yes, at designated campsites such as those in Akagera. Ask about a 4×4 with a rooftop tent and camping kit.
