Uganda’s gorilla forests and crater lakes are only a few hours away, while Tanzania’s great parks are a longer, bigger adventure. This guide helps you plan a Rwanda to Uganda road trip, or a longer loop into Tanzania, with realistic routes, drive times and vehicle advice.
Planning a Rwanda to Uganda Road Trip
Uganda is the most popular add-on for travellers renting a car in Kigali. Three main crossings lead into the south-west, and each suits a different route.

Most self-drivers use Gatuna for its good road and short distance. However, if you are trekking gorillas in Volcanoes first, Cyanika is the natural exit from Musanze.
Drive on the left in Uganda
Rwanda drives on the right, but Uganda drives on the left. The switch happens at the border. Take the first few kilometres slowly, especially at roundabouts and when overtaking.
Uganda Highlights Within Easy Reach
Lake Bunyonyi
Just beyond Kabale, this island-dotted lake is a relaxing first stop. The road from the border takes around an hour. Lodges overlook the water, and canoe trips are popular. It is also a good place to rest after the border and get used to driving on the left.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is famous for mountain gorillas. Depending on the sector, expect 5–7 hours from Kigali. The final stretches are steep murram roads, so a proper 4×4 is essential. Read more on our Bwindi and Mgahinga page.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Further north, Queen Elizabeth offers savannah game drives, boat trips on the Kazinga Channel and tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. It works well as part of a week-long loop.
Lake Mburo National Park
This compact park has zebras, impalas and walking safaris. It suits travellers entering via Kagitumba or heading towards Kampala.
Road Conditions in South-West Uganda
Uganda’s main highways are tarmac, but they feel different from Rwanda’s. Expect more potholes, more trucks and more speed bumps through trading centres.
On the main roads
The Kabale to Mbarara highway is busy with heavy lorries. Overtake only with a long, clear view. Also, watch for boda-boda motorbikes, which often pull out without warning.
On the way to Bwindi
The roads to Rushaga, Ruhija and Buhoma climb through steep hills on murram. After rain, they can be slippery and rutted. Engage 4WD early, keep speeds low and allow extra time. Your lodge can advise on the current state of the road.
Fuel and money
Fill up in Kabale or Kisoro before heading to the parks. Also carry Ugandan shillings, because card payments are less common in rural areas.
Taking the Car Into Tanzania
Tanzania is a bigger undertaking. The main crossing is at Rusumo, roughly 3 hours south-east of Kigali. From there, distances grow fast.
- The Serengeti’s western edge is a long two-day drive from the border.
- Roads vary from good tarmac to rough gravel and slow sections through towns.
- Fuel stations can be far apart, so fill up whenever you can.
- Like Uganda, Tanzania drives on the left.
For most visitors, Tanzania suits trips of two weeks or more. If your time is shorter, Uganda gives you far more for the hours spent driving.
Choosing the Right Vehicle
Cross-border trips cover long distances and mixed roads, so comfort and toughness both matter.
- Land Cruiser Safari: the top choice for Bwindi tracks and game drives in Queen Elizabeth.
- Land Cruiser Prado: comfortable on long tarmac days, still strong off-road.
- Land Cruiser with rooftop tent: ideal for campers on a budget-friendly loop.
- Toyota RAV4: fine for Lake Bunyonyi via good roads, but not for Bwindi’s steep tracks.
Not every vehicle is cleared for every country, so confirm cross-border permission when you book.
Paperwork You Will Need
Crossing with a rental car needs a little admin. We prepare the vehicle documents for you, but you should know what to expect.

- COMESA Yellow Card insurance for the countries you will enter
- The vehicle’s registration documents
- Your passport, visa and yellow fever certificate
- Your driving licence, ideally with an International Driving Permit

Budget and Timing Tips
A cross-border road trip has costs a Rwanda-only trip doesn’t. Plan for border insurance, vehicle permits, park fees and more fuel. Gorilla permits are set separately by RDB in Rwanda (US$1,500) and by UWA in Uganda, and prices change, so check current rates.
