Some of Rwanda’s best moments happen between destinations: terraced hills at sunrise, tea fields running to the horizon, Lake Kivu glinting below a hairpin bend. A Rwanda scenic road trip lets you stop for those views whenever you like. This guide covers the most beautiful routes, where to pull over, and how to plan driving days around the scenery.

Five Routes for a Rwanda Scenic Road Trip
Rwanda’s road network is compact, so you can link several of these drives in one week. Each has a different character.
1. Kigali to Musanze: the twin lakes road
The drive north takes about 2–2.5 hours. The road climbs through steep, farmed hillsides with sweeping valley views. As you near Musanze, the chain of Virunga volcanoes appears on the horizon. On clear mornings, the cones of Karisimbi, Bisoke and Muhabura stand out sharply.
For a detour, take the side road to the viewpoints above Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. The twin lakes, dotted with islands, are among the prettiest sights in the country.
2. Musanze to Rubavu: volcanoes to the lake
This short drive, around 1.5 hours, runs along the foot of the volcanoes before dropping down to Lake Kivu. The descent into Rubavu reveals the wide blue lake and the hills of DRC on the far shore.
3. Rubavu to Karongi and Rusizi: the Kivu shore road
This is the classic scenic drive. The road twists along the lakeshore through Karongi and Nyamasheke to Rusizi, past coffee farms, banana groves and fishing bays. Expect endless bends, so plan a full day and avoid rushing.
4. Through Nyungwe Forest
The highway through Nyungwe cuts straight across one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests. Mist hangs in the valleys, and you may see monkeys by the roadside. Just past the forest, the Gisakura tea estate spreads in neat green rows.
5. Kigali to Akagera: savanna and lakes
Heading east, about 2.5 hours to the main gate, the hills flatten into open savanna. Inside the park, the lake-side tracks around Ihema offer wide views and good wildlife.
A 7-Day Scenic Loop
This circuit covers the country’s most photogenic roads without long night drives.
| Day | Route | Scenic highlight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kigali – Musanze | First views of the Virunga volcanoes |
| 2 | Burera and Ruhondo lakes | Twin lakes viewpoints |
| 3 | Musanze – Rubavu | Descent to Lake Kivu |
| 4 | Rubavu – Karongi | Lakeshore bays and islands |
| 5 | Karongi – Nyungwe | Coffee hills and tea estates |
| 6 | Nyungwe – Huye | Rainforest highway |
| 7 | Huye – Kigali | Rolling southern farmland |
Add two nights in Akagera at the start or end if you want savanna as well. For more route ideas, see our road trips in Rwanda page and the Lake Kivu guide.
Choosing a Car for Scenic Drives
Main roads on this loop are paved. However, viewpoints, lakeside lodges and the Kivu shore villages often sit down short dirt tracks. A 4×4 with good clearance lets you follow those detours without worry.
- Couples: a Toyota RAV4 is nimble on the bends and easy to park in towns.
- Photographers and families: a Land Cruiser Prado gives a high seat for views and room for gear.
- Campers: a 4×4 with a rooftop tent lets you wake up at lakeside campsites.
Timing Your Drives for the Best Views
Light and weather make a huge difference. Mornings are usually clearer, especially for volcano views, while clouds often build after midday. So start early on the days you most want to see the mountains.
The drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, bring the clearest skies. In contrast, the wet seasons turn the hills intensely green, although rain can hide the peaks. Late-afternoon light over Lake Kivu is beautiful at any time of year.
Allow time for stopping
The posted drive times assume you keep moving. On a scenic trip, you won’t. Add at least an hour per day for photo stops, roadside fruit stands and coffee breaks.
Where to Break the Journey
Good overnight stops make a scenic trip far more relaxed. Rather than long transfer days, choose bases that put the views right outside your door.
- Musanze or Kinigi: wake up facing the volcanoes, ideal for early clear-sky views.
- Lakes Burera and Ruhondo: a few quiet lodges sit on the hills between the two lakes.
- Rubavu: sandy lake beaches and a lively waterfront for sunset.
- Karongi: the halfway point on the Kivu shore, with island boat trips.
- Gisakura: on the edge of Nyungwe, surrounded by tea fields.
In busy months, lodges in these spots fill fast. Therefore, book rooms before you confirm the car.
Driving and Photography Tips
- Rwanda drives on the right. Pull fully off the road before stopping for photos.
- Avoid stopping on blind bends, which are common on the Kivu and Nyungwe roads.
- Ask before photographing people, and respect a “no”.
- Drones need official permission, so leave yours at home unless you have a permit.
- Fuel up in Musanze, Rubavu, Karongi and Huye; stations are sparse in between.
- Finish driving before dark, as rural roads are unlit.
If you would rather enjoy the views than watch the road, a car hire with driver lets everyone look out of the window.
FAQ: Rwanda Scenic Road Trip
Which is the single most scenic drive in Rwanda?
Most travellers pick the Lake Kivu shore road between Rubavu and Rusizi. The mix of lake, islands and terraced hills is hard to beat.
Is the Kivu shore road paved?
The main road is paved, but it is winding and slow. Side roads to beaches and villages are often gravel.
How many days do I need for a scenic loop?
Seven days covers the main western and northern routes comfortably. Add two days if you want to include Akagera.
Can I end the trip somewhere other than Kigali?
Often yes, with notice. Ask about one-way returns when you book.
