Rwanda has four national parks, and you can reach all of them by car from Kigali. With a self-drive 4×4, you can link them into one big loop or visit just one or two. This guide maps out the best Rwanda national park routes, with drive times, stopovers and tips for each leg.
The Four Parks and Where They Sit
Each park has its own character, and each lies in a different corner of the country. Knowing where they are helps you plan an efficient route.
| Park | Location | Highlights | From Kigali |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volcanoes | North-west | Mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, volcano hikes | 2 to 2.5 hours |
| Akagera | East | Savannah game drives, lakes, boat trips | About 2.5 hours to the gate |
| Nyungwe | South-west | Chimpanzees, canopy walk, rainforest trails | 5 to 6 hours |
| Gishwati-Mukura | West | Chimps, forest walks, birds, quieter trails | Roughly 3 to 4 hours |
Kigali sits near the middle, so it works well as a hub. However, Akagera lies far from the western parks, so it is usually a separate out-and-back trip.

Route 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
This is the most popular drive in the country. The paved road heads north-west through terraced hills to Musanze, the base for gorilla trekking.
- Distance: about 2 to 2.5 hours on paved roads.
- Good stop: the viewpoints above the Base area before Musanze.
- Overnight base: Musanze town or lodges near Kinigi.
Arrive the day before your trek, since check-in at park headquarters is around 7 a.m. Gorilla permits cost US$1,500 from RDB, so do not cut timing close. Our Volcanoes National Park page has more on activities.
Route 2: Kigali to Akagera National Park
Akagera is an easy eastern escape. You drive through Rwamagana and Kayonza, then turn north to the southern gate.
- Distance: about 2.5 hours to the gate.
- Good stop: Kayonza, for fuel and supplies.
- Overnight base: lodges or campsites inside the park.
Plan a full day inside, entering in the south and exiting in the north. That way, you see the lakes and the open plains without backtracking. A Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof is ideal for game viewing. See our Akagera National Park guide.
Route 3: Kigali to Nyungwe via Huye
This is the longest single drive, heading south then west into the forest. Break it in Huye, a university town with cafés and the national Ethnographic Museum.
- Distance: 5 to 6 hours in total.
- Good stop: Huye, about halfway.
- Overnight base: lodges near Kitabi in the east or Gisakura in the west.
The forest road is paved but very winding. So drive in daylight and expect fog. Read more on our Nyungwe National Park page.
Route 4: The Western Loop Along Lake Kivu
This route links Volcanoes and Nyungwe via the lake, and it is one of the most scenic drives in East Africa. From Musanze, drive to Rubavu on the lake shore, then follow the winding road south.
- Musanze to Rubavu: about 1.5 hours.
- Rubavu to Karongi: a slow, scenic drive with many bends.
- Karongi to Rusizi, then east into Nyungwe.
Gishwati-Mukura sits just inland from this road. So it makes an easy half-day detour for a quieter forest walk. Spend at least one night at Lake Kivu to break the journey.
Linking the Rwanda National Park Routes Into One Loop
If you have about ten days, you can see all four parks in one trip. Here is a route that avoids long backtracking.
- Days 1–2: Kigali to Akagera, game drives, back to Kigali.
- Days 3–5: Kigali to Musanze, gorilla trek and a free day.
- Days 6–7: Rubavu and Lake Kivu, with a Gishwati detour.
- Days 8–9: Down the lake to Nyungwe, chimps and canopy walk.
- Day 10: Nyungwe back to Kigali via Huye.
With less time, drop Akagera or Nyungwe. A five-day trip covering Volcanoes and Lake Kivu is still very rewarding. For a planned version, see our road trips in Rwanda page.
Best Seasons for Each Route
Timing changes how each route feels. The dry months, roughly June to September and December to February, suit every park. Tracks are firmer, and wildlife in Akagera gathers near water.
During the rains from March to May, the Volcanoes and Nyungwe routes stay open, but trails are muddy and fog is common. Akagera’s northern tracks can also get heavy. So in the wet season, allow extra time for each leg and keep one spare day in your plan.
Which vehicle for which route
A Land Cruiser suits every route on this page, especially Akagera. A Prado is a comfortable choice for the Volcanoes and Lake Kivu legs. Meanwhile, a RAV4 is fine if you only follow paved roads between towns.
Self-Drive Tips for These Routes
- Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common.
- Fuel up in towns, because there are no pumps inside the parks.
- Download offline maps, as signal drops in forests and hills.
- Avoid driving after dark on rural roads.
- Book park activities ahead, especially in the June to September peak.
Our self-drive Rwanda service includes a route briefing at handover. We can also mark fuel stops and good lunch spots on your map.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which park route is best for a short trip?
Kigali to Volcanoes is the best short option. You can trek gorillas and be back in Kigali within two or three days.
Can I combine Akagera and Volcanoes without returning to Kigali?
Not easily. Most routes pass back through Kigali, since it sits between the two parks.
Do I need a 4×4 for every park?
A 4×4 is strongly advised for Akagera and Volcanoes trailheads. For Nyungwe’s main road, a smaller SUV can manage, but a 4×4 is more comfortable.
How many days do I need for all four parks?
About ten days allows a relaxed pace with time for each park and a night at Lake Kivu.
