How to pack a Hilux for Toyota Hilux camping Rwanda trips
An open load bed needs a little planning. Dust and rain are the two main enemies, so pack with both in mind.
Packing tips
- Use sturdy plastic crates with lids for food and cooking gear.
- Put clothes and sleeping bags in waterproof bags.
- Strap everything down so it does not shift on rough roads.
- Keep heavy items low and close to the cab.
- Pack a tarp to cover the load during sudden rain.
- Keep valuables, documents and cameras inside the cabin.
Ask whether your Hilux comes with a canopy or bed cover. A covered bed keeps gear dry and out of sight, which also helps with security at campsites.
Best camping routes for a Hilux
The Hilux shines on routes that mix tarmac with gravel and dirt. Here are some favourites.
Akagera National Park
About 2.5 hours from Kigali to the gate. Camping in Akagera puts you close to the wildlife, and the Hilux copes well with the park’s dusty tracks. Book campsites ahead and camp only at designated sites.
Lake Kivu shore
Rubavu is about 3–3.5 hours from Kigali. From there, the road south along the lake passes hills, fishing villages and quiet lakeside spots. The Congo Nile Trail area is especially scenic.
Volcanoes and the Twin Lakes
Musanze is about 2–2.5 hours from Kigali. Use it as a base for gorilla trekking and hikes, then explore the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Remember that the gorilla permit is US$1,500 and is set by RDB.
Nyungwe and the southwest
Nyungwe is 5–6 hours from Kigali on a winding mountain road. The Hilux’s spare capacity is useful here, since camping supplies are limited near the forest.
When to go camping with a pickup
The dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, are the easiest for camping. Campsites are firm, tracks are dusty rather than muddy, and evenings are pleasant. However, this is also peak season, so book campsites and your Hilux early.
In the rainy months, roughly March to May and October to November, camping is still possible but needs more care. Pitch tents on higher ground, cover the load bed fully and allow extra time on dirt roads. On the plus side, parks are greener and much quieter.
Cold nights in the hills
Rwanda is high, and nights near Volcanoes and Nyungwe can be surprisingly cold. So pack warm layers, a hat and a good sleeping bag, even if Kigali feels warm.
Driving a loaded pickup safely
A pickup handles differently when the bed is full. The extra weight improves the ride on rough roads but lengthens braking distances. So slow down earlier for bends and downhill sections.
- Engage 4WD before you reach mud, not once you are stuck.
- Drive slowly on corrugated roads to protect your load.
- Check straps and covers at every stop.
- Avoid driving outside towns after dark.
Rwanda drives on the right. If you cross into Uganda, remember that traffic switches to the left.

- At least 20 litres of drinking water.
- Head torches and spare batteries.
- A first aid kit and insect repellent.
