Weekly car hire in Kigali is one of the simplest ways to get better value from a 4×4 rental in Rwanda. A week gives you time for gorillas, a game drive and a lake weekend without rushing. Also, renting by the week usually costs less per day than booking day by day. Here is how to get the best deal and plan a great seven days.
Why Weekly Car Hire Kigali Saves You Money
Rental pricing in Rwanda, as in most places, rewards longer bookings. When you commit to a week, the company spends less time on handovers, cleaning and paperwork per day of hire. So that saving can be passed on to you.
A week also suits Rwanda’s size. You can cover the main parks comfortably and still have rest days. As a result, many visitors find a seven-day hire better value than a shorter rental plus taxis.
If you need longer, our long and short term car hire covers stays of several weeks or months.

Seven Ways to Get a Better Rate
- Book early. Land Cruisers sell out in the dry seasons. Early bookings get better choice and often better rates.
- Travel in the low season. The rainy months usually bring lower demand. Roads get muddier, but a 4×4 handles them.
- Pick the right size. A RAV4 costs less than a Land Cruiser. If you mainly drive on tarmac, it may be all you need.
- Choose self-drive. Driving yourself avoids driver fees and allowances.
- Extend to two weeks. If your plans are flexible, ask for a quote on a longer hire too.
- Camp instead of lodging. A rooftop tent setup can cut accommodation costs sharply.
- Ask what is included. Compare insurance, support and extras, not just the headline price.

Which Vehicle for a Week in Rwanda?
| Vehicle | Best for | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 | Couples, Kigali and tarmac routes | Lower clearance on rough tracks |
| Land Cruiser Prado | Mixed itineraries, gorilla trips | Good balance of comfort and ability |
| Land Cruiser TXL/GX | Akagera, rainy season, families | Most capable off-road |
| Land Cruiser with rooftop tent | Budget campers | Camp at designated sites only |
| Toyota Hiace | Groups | Usually with a driver |
The Land Cruiser Safari remains the most popular choice for a full week, because it handles every road you are likely to meet.
A Sample Seven-Day Route
Here is an itinerary that fits nicely into a week. Adjust it to your interests and permits.
Day 1: Kigali
Collect your car at the airport or hotel. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then explore markets and cafés.
Days 2–3: Volcanoes National Park
Drive to Musanze, about 2 to 2.5 hours. Trek gorillas the next morning. The Rwanda permit is US$1,500, set by RDB, so book early. Check the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking too.
Days 4–5: Lake Kivu
Head west to Rubavu, roughly 2 hours from Musanze. Relax by the water and take a boat cruise.
Day 6: Back to Kigali or on to Akagera
Return to Kigali, about 3 to 3.5 hours. Alternatively, swap the lake for Akagera National Park, about 2.5 hours from Kigali, for a game drive and a boat trip on Lake Ihema.
Day 7: Return
Drop the car at your hotel or the airport before your flight.
If you prefer forests, replace Lake Kivu with Nyungwe. It is 5 to 6 hours from Kigali, and it offers chimpanzees and the canopy walk.
Budgeting Beyond the Rental Rate
The daily rate is only part of your transport budget. So plan for these costs too, and your week will hold no surprises.
Fuel
Fuel is normally paid by you. A Land Cruiser uses more than a RAV4, so the vehicle choice affects this. Fill up in larger towns such as Musanze, Rubavu, Huye and Kayonza, because rural stations are few.
Park fees and permits
Park entry, vehicle fees and activity permits are set by RDB and change from time to time. Check current rates before you travel, and budget for them separately.
Parking and small extras
Kigali has some paid parking zones, and lodges sometimes charge for secure parking. Also, keep small notes for snacks, tips and car washes after muddy days.
Optional add-ons
Child seats, camping gear, a second driver or a cross-border permit may add to the total. Ask about these when you request a quote, so the price you compare is the real price.
Self-Drive or With a Driver?
Both work well for a week. Self-drive is cheaper and gives you full freedom. Our self-drive Rwanda service includes a briefing and phone support throughout your trip.
However, a driver can be worth it if you are nervous about mountain roads or want to relax. Local drivers also know good lunch stops and viewpoints. Rwanda drives on the right, and the main roads are in good condition, so many visitors happily drive themselves.
Camping to Stretch Your Budget
A 4×4 with a rooftop tent is a great money saver over a week. You get transport and a bed in one package. Our camping kits can include sleeping bags, chairs, a table and cooking gear.
Camp only at official campsites, such as those in Akagera, or at lodges that welcome campers. Also, keep food sealed in the vehicle at night, and set up before dark.
Avoiding Problems With Your Rental
Cheap deals are tempting, but a breakdown can ruin a week. Here is how to protect yourself.
- Book with a company that gives you a clear written agreement.
- Inspect the vehicle at pickup and photograph any marks.
- Check the spare tyre, jack and 4WD controls.
- Confirm who to call for roadside help, and save the number.
- Be wary of deals that ask for full payment to a personal account with no paperwork.
During your week, keep the vehicle clean inside, avoid driving at night outside towns, and report warning lights straight away.
Extending Into Uganda
A week is enough to add a short Uganda leg. The Katuna border is about 1.5 hours from Kigali, and Bwindi is roughly 5 to 7 hours away depending on the route. Cross-border trips need advance paperwork, so tell us early. Remember that Uganda drives on the left.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is weekly hire cheaper than daily hire?
Usually, yes. Longer rentals generally bring a lower daily rate. Ask us for both quotes if you are unsure how long you need.
Can I collect the car at Kigali airport?
Yes. We meet you at arrivals and can collect the car there at the end of your trip.
Do I need a 4×4 for a week in Rwanda?
For Akagera, trailheads and the rainy season, a 4×4 is strongly recommended. For tarmac-only trips, a RAV4 may be enough.
Can I change my dates after booking?
Often, yes, subject to availability. Contact us as soon as your plans change, especially in the busy dry seasons when vehicles are fully booked.
What documents do I need?
Bring your passport and a valid driving licence. An International Driving Permit is recommended, particularly if your licence is not in English.
