A good Rwanda self drive itinerary matches your days to realistic drive times, so you spend more hours watching wildlife and fewer staring at the road. Because the country is small, you can see a lot in a week. Below are four ready-made routes, from a three-day taster to a ten-day grand loop, with tips for adapting each one.
How to Read These Routes
Each route starts and ends in Kigali, where most visitors collect their car. Drive times assume normal traffic and a few short stops. In addition, every day is planned to finish before dark, around 6 to 6.30 pm year-round.
Key drive times from Kigali
| Destination | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Musanze (Volcanoes) | 2–2.5 hours |
| Akagera main gate | About 2.5 hours |
| Rubavu (Lake Kivu) | 3–3.5 hours |
| Nyungwe | 5–6 hours |
| Katuna border with Uganda | About 1.5 hours |
Three-Day Rwanda Self Drive Itinerary: Gorillas and the Lake
This short route suits travellers with a gorilla permit and a few spare days.
- Day 1 – Kigali to Musanze: Morning in Kigali, then drive north in about 2–2.5 hours. Check in near Kinigi and prepare for an early start.
- Day 2 – Gorilla trek and Lake Kivu: Report to park headquarters early for your trek. After lunch, drive west to Rubavu for a lakeside evening.
- Day 3 – Rubavu to Kigali: Enjoy a slow morning by the water, then return to Kigali in about 3–3.5 hours.
The gorilla permit costs US$1,500 and is set by the Rwanda Development Board. See our Volcanoes National Park guide for trek details.
Five-Day Route: Savannah and Mountains
This plan adds Akagera, so you combine big game with primates.
- Day 1 – Kigali to Akagera: Leave early, refuel in Kayonza and enter the park. Afternoon game drive and a boat trip on Lake Ihema.
- Day 2 – Akagera: Dawn drive towards the northern plains, then exit and return to Kigali for the night.
- Day 3 – Kigali to Musanze: Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial in the morning, then head north.
- Day 4 – Volcanoes: Gorilla trek, golden monkey tracking or a hike.
- Day 5 – Musanze to Kigali: Stop at the twin lakes viewpoints on the way back.
For more on the east, read our Akagera National Park page.

Seven-Day Route: The Western Lakes and Forest
This route swaps Akagera for Nyungwe and the scenic Lake Kivu shore. It suits travellers who love forests, hiking and views.
- Day 1 – Kigali to Musanze: Afternoon arrival and a short walk in town.
- Day 2 – Volcanoes: Gorilla trek or a volcano hike.
- Day 3 – Musanze to Rubavu: Short drive west and an afternoon on the lake.
- Day 4 – Rubavu to Karongi: Drive south along the hilly lakeside road, part of it unpaved.
- Day 5 – Karongi to Nyungwe: Continue south through tea country to the forest.
- Day 6 – Nyungwe: Canopy walk, chimpanzee tracking or a forest trail.
- Day 7 – Nyungwe to Kigali: The long drive back, about 5–6 hours, with a stop in Huye.
The lakeside sections are slow and steep, so a 4×4 is the right tool. Learn more on our Nyungwe National Park page.
Ten-Day Grand Loop of Rwanda
With ten days, you can link all the highlights at a comfortable pace.
| Days | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Akagera | Game drives and a boat trip. |
| 3 | Kigali | Memorial, markets and cafés. |
| 4–5 | Musanze | Gorillas, golden monkeys and the twin lakes. |
| 6 | Rubavu | Lake Kivu beaches and sunsets. |
| 7 | Karongi | Island boat trips and lake views. |
| 8–9 | Nyungwe | Canopy walk and chimpanzees. |
| 10 | Kigali | Return via Huye and drop off the car. |
This loop covers savannah, mountains, lake and rainforest in one trip. Similar ideas appear on our road trips in Rwanda page.
Adding Uganda to Your Route
Many travellers extend their trip into Uganda, for example to Bwindi or Lake Bunyonyi. The Katuna border is about 1.5 hours from Kigali. However, remember that Uganda drives on the left, while Rwanda drives on the right.
Cross-border travel needs extra documents for the vehicle, so tell us when you book. Our 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari shows one way to combine both countries.
Matching the Vehicle to Your Route
Each of these routes asks something different of the car. So pick the vehicle after you pick the route, not before.
- Three-day gorilla route: mostly tarmac, so a RAV4 or Prado is enough in dry weather. A Land Cruiser adds margin on the steep trailhead roads.
- Five-day savannah and mountains: Akagera’s sandy tracks favour a Land Cruiser, ideally with a pop-up roof for game viewing.
- Seven-day lakes and forest: the unpaved Kivu shore and long Nyungwe drive call for a comfortable, high-clearance 4×4.
- Ten-day grand loop: a Land Cruiser handles every section and has room for luggage on a long trip.
If you plan to camp on any route, add a rooftop tent and camping kit when you book.
Tips for Adapting Any Itinerary
- Anchor on permits. Fix your gorilla and chimp dates first, then build the days around them.
- Avoid back-to-back long drives. Follow a long day with a shorter one.
- Refuel in towns. Kayonza, Musanze, Rubavu and Huye are reliable stops.
- Allow for rain. In wetter months, leave spare time on dirt sections.
- Keep one flexible day on longer trips for weather or a place you love.
