Rwanda is small, but its parks sit in opposite corners, so the order you visit them matters. A good Rwanda self drive safari itinerary keeps driving days short, puts permits in the right place and avoids doubling back. Below are three ready-made routes, for 4, 7 and 10 days, plus the planning rules behind them.
Five Rules for Building a Rwanda Self Drive Safari Itinerary
Before you look at the routes, it helps to know the logic. These rules apply whatever length of trip you choose.
- Anchor the trip on your gorilla permit. The date is fixed, so build everything else around it.
- Arrive the night before any trek. Briefings start around 7:00, and nobody waits for late arrivals.
- Keep driving under five hours a day where possible, so you arrive with daylight to spare.
- Treat Akagera and Nyungwe as separate wings. One is east, the other south-west, with Kigali in between.
- Add one buffer day on longer trips for rain, rest or a place you fall in love with.
Core drive times from Kigali
| Destination | Approximate drive |
|---|---|
| Musanze / Volcanoes | 2–2.5 hours |
| Akagera gate | About 2.5 hours |
| Rubavu / Lake Kivu | 3–3.5 hours |
| Nyungwe Forest | 5–6 hours |
The 4-Day Itinerary: Gorillas and Savannah
This short route suits travellers with limited leave. It covers the two experiences most visitors want: gorillas and a classic game drive.
- Day 1: Collect your 4×4 in Kigali early. Drive to Akagera, about 2.5 hours, and do an afternoon game drive.
- Day 2: Morning game drive in Akagera, then return to Kigali and continue north to Musanze. This is a long day, so leave the park by late morning.
- Day 3: Gorilla trek from Kinigi. Rest in the afternoon or visit the twin lakes.
- Day 4: Drive back to Kigali, about 2 to 2.5 hours, and return the car.
For an Akagera-focused short trip, see our 2 days Akagera safari.

The 7-Day Itinerary: Primates, Lake and Savannah
A week lets you add Lake Kivu and slow the pace. Driving days are shorter, and you get a proper rest day.
- Day 1: Kigali. Collect the car, visit the Genocide Memorial and stock up on supplies.
- Day 2: Drive to Musanze. Afternoon at a cultural village or the Musanze caves.
- Day 3: Gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.
- Day 4: Golden monkey trek in the morning, then drive about 1.5 hours to Rubavu.
- Day 5: Lake Kivu rest day. Swim, take a boat trip or visit a coffee farm.
- Day 6: Drive to Akagera via Kigali. This is the longest day, so start early.
- Day 7: Dawn game drive, then return to Kigali.
Why this order works
Doing the north first gets the fixed-date permits done early. If a trek is postponed by weather, you still have spare days. Ending in Akagera also places you close to Kigali for your flight.
The 10-Day Itinerary: The Full Rwanda Loop
Ten days lets you see every major park, including Nyungwe’s chimpanzees and canopy walk.
- Day 1: Kigali city day.
- Day 2: Drive east to Akagera; afternoon game drive.
- Day 3: Full day in Akagera, with a boat trip on Lake Ihema.
- Day 4: Return west through Kigali to Musanze.
- Day 5: Gorilla trek.
- Day 6: Golden monkeys or the Dian Fossey hike, then on to Rubavu.
- Day 7: Drive the Kivu shore south towards Karongi; take it slowly, as the road winds.
- Day 8: Continue to Nyungwe.
- Day 9: Chimp tracking and the canopy walk in Nyungwe.
- Day 10: Drive back to Kigali via Huye, about 5 to 6 hours.
Our Nyungwe National Park page explains the forest activities. For a longer trip that also crosses into Uganda, see the 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari.
Choosing the Right Vehicle for Each Route
The longer and wilder the itinerary, the more a sturdy 4×4 pays off.
- 4-day route: a Toyota RAV4 works well in the dry season.
- 7-day route: a Prado or Land Cruiser adds comfort on the longer Akagera day.
- 10-day route: a Land Cruiser Safari with a pop-up roof is ideal for game drives and rougher tracks.
If you plan to camp, ask for a rooftop tent. It can replace several nights of lodge costs.
A Typical Day on the Road
Self-drive days in Rwanda follow a natural rhythm. Animals are most active early and late, and the light is softer for photos. So plan game drives for dawn and late afternoon.
Use the middle of the day for driving between bases. Stop for lunch in a town, fill the tank, and buy fruit at roadside stalls. Then aim to reach your lodge or campsite by about 17:00, well before the quick equatorial sunset.
Fuel and supplies
Refuel in Kayonza before Akagera, in Musanze before trekking day, and in Huye before Nyungwe. Carry water and snacks for long stretches, as some roads have few shops.
Timing Your Itinerary by Season
The long dry season from June to September brings firm roads and easy game viewing. Mid-December to February is also fairly dry. However, these are the busiest months, so book permits and vehicles early.
In the rainy months, add a buffer day and allow extra time on park tracks. Gorillas can be trekked all year. For more detail, see the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking.
Permits and fees
The Rwanda gorilla permit is US$1,500, issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Other park fees are set by the authorities and change, so check current rates before you finalise the plan.
FAQ
Can I do Akagera and Volcanoes on the same day?
It is possible but tiring, as in the 4-day route. If you can, add a night in Kigali between them.
Is Nyungwe worth it on a short trip?
Only if you have at least seven days. The drive is long, so it fits best in the 10-day loop.
Can I start and end in different places?
Some one-way drops can be arranged. Ask us when you share your route.
