Rwanda Regional Travel Guide with Car Hire and Self Drive

Rwanda is small, but each of its regions feels different: savannah in the east, volcanoes in the north, a great lake in the west and rainforest in the south. With a hire car, you can see them all in one trip. This Rwanda regional travel guide breaks the country into five areas and explains what to see and how to drive each one.

How Rwanda’s Regions Fit Together

Rwanda has five administrative areas: the City of Kigali and the Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern Provinces. Kigali sits in the middle, so most routes start and end there. Main roads fan out from the capital like spokes on a wheel.

Rwanda Adventure Road Trip:

City of Kigali: Your Starting Point

Kigali is clean, green and easy to drive once you learn the roundabouts. Spend at least one day here before heading out. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the markets of Kimironko and the lively streets of Nyamirambo.

Kigali is also where you stock up. Supermarkets, ATMs, forex bureaus and good fuel stations are all easy to find. For ideas, see our 3-day Kigali cultural tour.

Northern Province: Volcanoes and Lakes

The road north climbs through terraced hills to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. It’s paved all the way and very scenic. Gorilla and golden monkey treks start at the park headquarters in Kinigi.

Highlights

  • Gorilla trekking (permit US$1,500, issued by RDB)
  • Golden monkey treks and volcano hikes
  • Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, a short drive east of Musanze
  • Musanze caves and local craft centres

Driving notes

Roads to lodges around Kinigi can be rocky and steep. So a 4×4 with good clearance helps, especially in the rainy months. Read more on our Volcanoes National Park page.

Western Province: Along Lake Kivu

From Musanze, it’s a short drive west to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Alternatively, drive from Kigali in 3–3.5 hours. Rubavu has sandy beaches, lakeside cafés and a relaxed feel.

South of Rubavu, the shore road winds past Karongi and on to Rusizi. It’s one of Rwanda’s most beautiful drives, with coffee farms, fishing villages and island views. However, the road twists constantly, so allow plenty of time. Learn more on our Lake Kivu page.

Highlights

  • Boat trips and swimming at Rubavu and Karongi
  • Coffee farm visits near the lake
  • Sections of the Congo Nile Trail by car or on foot

Southern Province: Forest and Heritage

The south mixes culture and nature. On the way from Kigali, you pass Nyanza, home of the King’s Palace Museum. Next comes Huye, a university town with the Ethnographic Museum.

Further west lies Nyungwe National Park, a vast mountain rainforest. Here you’ll find chimpanzee treks, the canopy walk and forest trails. Nyungwe is wet and misty, so drive in daylight and expect slow sections. Our Nyungwe National Park guide has trail details.

Eastern Province: Savannah Safari

The east is lower, warmer and drier. Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s Big Five reserve, with lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards. The drive from Kigali takes about 2.5 hours.

Inside the park, tracks are gravel and sometimes sandy or muddy. A Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof is ideal for game viewing. Don’t miss a boat trip on Lake Ihema for hippos and crocodiles. See our Akagera National Park page for more.

Linking the Regions: A Rwanda Regional Travel Loop

This ten-day self-drive loop covers all five areas without backtracking too much.

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Kigali; city tour.
  2. Days 2–3: Akagera game drives and boat trip.
  3. Days 4–5: Back through Kigali to Musanze; gorilla trek.
  4. Day 6: Drive to Rubavu on Lake Kivu.
  5. Day 7: Shore road south to Karongi.
  6. Days 8–9: Continue to Nyungwe for chimps and the canopy walk.
  7. Day 10: Return via Huye and Nyanza to Kigali.

Want to add Uganda? Bwindi is reachable via the Katuna or Cyanika borders, but you’ll need cross-border car hire papers. Remember that Uganda drives on the left.

Choosing a Vehicle for Multi-Region Travel

A multi-region trip covers tarmac, gravel and mud. Therefore, pick a vehicle that handles all three.

  • Two travellers, mostly tarmac: Toyota RAV4.
  • Families or mixed roads: Land Cruiser Prado.
  • Safari focus or camping: Land Cruiser Safari with pop-up roof or rooftop tent.

Compare them on our fleet page.

When to Visit Each Region

Rwanda’s two dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, suit every region. Even so, each area reacts differently to the rains.

  • North: trekking trails get muddy in the wet months, but gorillas are seen all year.
  • East: Akagera’s game viewing is best in the dry months, when animals gather near water.
  • West: Lake Kivu is pleasant year-round, though storms can roll in on afternoons.
  • South: Nyungwe is wet in every season, so pack rain gear whenever you go.

In practice, many travellers visit in the shoulder months for quieter roads and lodges. Just leave more time for each drive.

Regional Driving Tips

  • Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras are common.
  • Fill up in regional towns: Musanze, Rubavu, Karongi, Huye and Rusizi.
  • Avoid driving after dark outside Kigali.
  • Carry some Rwandan francs for rural stops.
  • Check road conditions with your lodge in the rainy months.

Regional Travel FAQ

How many days do I need to see every region?

Ten days is comfortable. With seven, skip the Kivu shore road or shorten Nyungwe.

Which region should I skip if time is short?

It depends on your interests. Gorilla fans prioritise the north; first-time safari-goers prioritise Akagera.

Can I drive from Nyungwe straight back to Kigali?

Yes, via Huye. Allow 5–6 hours and leave early.

Is it better to hire one car for the whole loop?

Yes. One vehicle saves time on handovers, and you keep the same setup throughout.
