Kigali multi-nation car hire services operated for dedicated safari

Some safari fans want more than one country from a single trip. Kigali multi-nation car hire lets you collect one 4×4 in Rwanda’s capital and drive it through Uganda, Tanzania or Kenya without changing vehicles at the border. This guide covers the routes, paperwork and driving changes you need to plan for.

Kigali

Why Start a Multi-Country Safari in Kigali

Kigali sits at the centre of the Great Lakes region. Uganda’s border at Katuna is about 1.5 hours away, and Tanzania’s Rusumo crossing lies to the east. As a result, Rwanda makes a neat hub for a loop through two or three countries.

There are practical reasons too. Kigali is clean, safe and easy to arrive in. Moreover, starting here lets you track gorillas in Volcanoes before the long border days begin, while you are still fresh. Finally, returning the car to the same city avoids the high fees of a one-way international drop-off.

Popular Routes for Kigali Multi-Nation Car Hire

Most dedicated safari travellers pick one of three loops. Each needs a different amount of time and driving stamina.

Rwanda and Uganda: the primate circuit

This is the most popular pairing. You can visit Volcanoes and Lake Kivu in Rwanda, then cross at Cyanika or Katuna into southwest Uganda. Kigali to Bwindi takes roughly 5 to 7 hours, depending on the border and the sector you visit. From there, Queen Elizabeth National Park and its tree-climbing lions are within reach. Allow at least 10 days, and look at our 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari for a tested plan.

Rwanda and Tanzania: Akagera to the Serengeti

Start with a game drive in Akagera, about 2.5 hours from Kigali. Then head east through Rusumo into Tanzania. The roads to the northern parks are long, so this works best for travellers with two weeks or more. Plan overnight stops rather than pushing through.

Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya: the grand overland

Experienced drivers sometimes link all three, crossing from Uganda into Kenya and continuing to the Maasai Mara. This is a serious expedition of several weeks. It suits people who enjoy the drive as much as the destinations.

Cross-Border Paperwork You Must Arrange Early

You cannot simply drive a Rwandan rental across a border. The vehicle needs its own documents, and some take days to prepare. Therefore, tell us every country on your route when you book.

  • Owner’s authorisation letter. This confirms you may take the vehicle out of Rwanda.
  • Copy of the registration logbook. Border officers check that the plate and chassis match.
  • Regional third-party insurance. This usually means a COMESA Yellow Card or the cover each country requires.
  • Temporary vehicle import permit. You get this at the border, and fees vary by country.
  • Your passport and visas. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya on one sticker. Tanzania needs its own visa.
  • Driving licence plus an International Driving Permit. Carry both in every country.

Our cross-border car hire page explains how we prepare each file. Rules and fees are set by each government and can change, so we confirm details close to your travel date.

Switching Sides of the Road at the Border

Here is the detail that surprises many visitors. Rwanda drives on the right. However, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania all drive on the left.

So the moment you leave the border post at Katuna or Rusumo, you change sides. Take it slowly for the first hour. Roundabouts are the trickiest part, because you must now go round clockwise. Also, overtaking feels unnatural at first, since your view of oncoming traffic changes.

A simple habit helps. Say “keep left” aloud each time you pull out of a fuel station or junction. It sounds silly, yet it prevents the most common mistake.

Choosing a Vehicle for Long Multi-Country Distances

A loop through several countries puts real kilometres on a vehicle. Comfort, fuel range and spares matter more than on a short Rwanda trip.

Land Cruiser PradoCouples wanting comfortSmooth on tarmac, capable on park tracks

Whichever you choose, ask for two spare tyres on longer routes. Also carry a basic tool kit and a tyre pressure gauge.

Self-Drive or Driver-Guide Across Borders?

Both work, and the choice depends on your confidence and budget. Self-drive gives you total freedom and privacy. On the other hand, you handle border queues, left-hand traffic and navigation yourself.

A driver-guide knows each crossing, speaks local languages and spots wildlife you would miss. Many travellers split the difference. They self-drive in Rwanda, then add a driver for the longer foreign legs. Our car hire with driver option can cover part or all of the route.

Budgeting the Extra Costs of a Multi-Nation Trip

Crossing borders adds costs that a Rwanda-only rental does not have. Plan for them up front so nothing catches you out.

  • Cross-border admin and insurance for the vehicle.
  • Temporary import and road fees at each border post.
  • Visas for every country on your route.
  • Park entry fees, set separately by RDB in Rwanda, UWA in Uganda and the park authorities elsewhere.
  • Extra fuel for long transit days.

Gorilla permits are the largest single cost. Rwanda’s permit is US$1,500, while Uganda sets its own price through UWA. Check current rates before you budget.

Multi-Nation Car Hire FAQs

Can I take a Rwandan rental into the DRC?

Only in specific cases, and travel advice for eastern DRC changes often. Ask us first, and check your government’s latest guidance before planning a crossing at Goma.

How much notice do you need for cross-border paperwork?

Give us at least a week, and more in busy months. That allows time to prepare insurance and the authorisation letter properly.

Which border is fastest for Uganda?

Katuna, also called Gatuna, is the main crossing and is about 1.5 hours from Kigali. Cyanika is handier if you go straight from Volcanoes to Mgahinga or Bwindi.

Can I return the car in another country?

Sometimes, but a one-way international return costs much more. Most travellers plan a loop that ends back in Kigali.
