When you book a safari vehicle Rwanda travellers rely on, timing is everything. Book too late and the pop-up roof Land Cruiser you wanted is gone. Book without lining it up with permits and lodges, and you may end up with a car but nowhere to drive it. This guide explains when to secure your vehicle and how to coordinate it with the rest of your trip.
Why the Order of Booking Matters
A Rwanda safari has a few fixed pieces and a few flexible ones. The fixed pieces should be locked in first, because everything else depends on them.
- Gorilla permits. They are limited per day and set your trekking date. The Rwanda permit is US$1,500, issued through RDB.
- Lodges near the parks. Good options near Volcanoes and inside Akagera fill up quickly in peak months.
- Your safari vehicle. Once dates and stops are fixed, book the car that fits that route.
- Flights. Ideally, confirm flights at the same time as the vehicle, so the airport pickup lines up.
In practice, many travellers secure permits and vehicles together. That way, if the permit date shifts, the car booking moves with it.

Book a Safari Vehicle Rwanda: Timing by Season
Demand for 4x4s rises and falls with the seasons. So your booking window depends on when you travel.
| Travel period | Demand | Booking advice |
|---|---|---|
| June to September | Highest, peak dry season | Book as soon as permits are confirmed. |
| December to February | High, holiday season | Book early, especially around Christmas and New Year. |
| March to May | Lower, long rains | A few weeks ahead is often enough. |
| October to November | Moderate, short rains | Book a few weeks ahead; earlier for groups. |
Also watch for events. For example, the Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony draws extra visitors to Musanze, and large conferences in Kigali can tie up executive vehicles.
Which vehicles sell out first
Specialist vehicles go fastest. These include Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, cars fitted with rooftop tents, and larger vehicles for families or groups. In contrast, compact SUVs like the RAV4 are usually easier to find at shorter notice.
Coordinating the Vehicle with Your Itinerary
Once your dates are set, share the full plan with us. Good coordination avoids wasted days and long, tiring drives.
- Volcanoes (gorillas): Kigali to Musanze is 2–2.5 hours. Stay nearby the night before, as you must reach Kinigi by 7:00 AM.
- Akagera (game drives): about 2.5 hours to the gate. A pop-up roof Land Cruiser Safari makes a big difference.
- Nyungwe (chimps and canopy walk): 5–6 hours from Kigali. Plan a full travel day.
- Lake Kivu: Rubavu is 3–3.5 hours from Kigali and pairs well with Volcanoes.
For sample routes, look at our 5 days Rwanda gorilla safari itinerary. It shows how drive days and trekking days fit together.
Self-drive or a driver-guide?
Decide this before you book, because it changes the quote. Self-drive suits confident drivers who want freedom. On the other hand, car hire with a driver is better if you want local knowledge, early-morning trailhead runs handled for you, or a guide for Akagera.
Need to Book a Safari Vehicle Rwanda Last Minute?
Plans change, and sometimes you only decide on a safari after landing. A short-notice booking can still work, especially outside peak months. However, be flexible.
- Consider a different model if your first choice is taken.
- Shift your park order, for example Akagera first and Volcanoes later.
- Ask about a driver-guided vehicle, which may be available when self-drive cars are not.
Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, and we will tell you quickly what is available.
Matching the Vehicle to Your Group
Group size affects both timing and choice. A couple can usually find a Prado or RAV4 at short notice. However, a family of six with luggage needs a larger Land Cruiser, and those are fewer.
For bigger groups, two vehicles are often better than one crowded car. Everyone gets a window seat for game viewing, and you have a backup if one car needs attention. Book both together so they travel as a convoy.
Camping safaris need extra lead time
If you want a rooftop tent, ask early. Each setup is fitted and checked before handover, and the tents, mattresses and cooking kit must be ready. See our car rental with camping gear page for what is included.
Changing or Extending Your Booking
Gorilla permit dates can sometimes move, and flights get rescheduled. If that happens, contact us as soon as possible. Changes are easier the earlier we know, and we will update your confirmation in writing.
Likewise, if you want to add a few days at Lake Kivu or extend into Uganda, ask before your rental ends. Cross-border trips need paperwork, so give us notice. Our long and short term car hire page explains flexible rental lengths.

FAQ
Should I book the car before or after my gorilla permit?
Ideally, at the same time. If not, secure the permit first, then book the vehicle immediately for those dates.
How early should I book a pop-up roof Land Cruiser for July or August?
As early as you can. These are the most requested vehicles in the peak dry season, so book once your dates are firm.
Can I book a safari vehicle after arriving in Kigali?
Often yes, especially in the rainy months. However, choice is limited, so be ready to switch models or dates.
What happens if my permit date changes?
Let us know right away. We will try to move your vehicle booking to match the new date.
