Lake Bunyonyi in south-western Uganda is one of the most beautiful lakes in East Africa and an easy road trip from Kigali. Terraced hills, quiet islands and calm water make it perfect for a few days of rest. With a cross-border car from 4×4 Car Rental Rwanda, you can drive there in a morning and explore at your own pace.
About Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi lies near Kabale, close to the Rwanda border. It is often described as one of Africa’s deepest lakes, and its name means “place of many little birds”. The water is free of crocodiles and hippos, so swimming is popular.
The lake works well as a rest stop between gorilla treks in Bwindi or Mgahinga and the drive back to Rwanda. In addition, it is a lovely base for canoe trips, walks and village visits.
Things to Do at Lake Bunyonyi
Explore the islands by boat

The lake has 29 islands, each with its own story. You can hire a motorboat or a traditional dugout canoe to visit several in one morning. For example, Punishment Island has a sad history, while Bwama Island once housed a leprosy centre.
Paddling at sunrise or late afternoon is especially peaceful. Most lodges arrange boat trips and life jackets for you.
Bird watching and nature walks
Over 200 bird species have been recorded around the lake. Look for the African harrier-hawk, great blue turaco, grey crowned crane and many kingfishers. Guided walks along the hills give great views and chances to spot birds up close.
Cultural visits

The Bakiga communities around the lake welcome visitors. You can join a village walk, visit a local school, or meet the Batwa people and learn about their forest heritage. These visits add real depth to your trip.
Many community projects sell crafts, so bring some cash to support local families.
Swimming and relaxing
Finally, give yourself time to do nothing. Many lodges have decks over the water, hammocks and swimming spots. It is the ideal place to rest tired legs after a gorilla trek.
How to Drive to Lake Bunyonyi From Kigali
The most direct route runs north from Kigali to the Gatuna (Katuna) border, which takes about 1.5 hours. After crossing into Uganda, it is a short drive on to Kabale and up the hill to the lake. In total, allow around 3 to 4 hours, depending on border queues.
The main road is tarmac, but lodge access roads around the lake are steep and gravel. So a 4×4 or a high-clearance SUV is the best choice, especially in the rain.
Border tips
- Bring your passport and a valid Uganda visa, or the East Africa Tourist Visa if it suits your trip.
- Carry your yellow fever certificate.
- Keep the vehicle’s cross-border documents and insurance ready to show.
- Remember that Uganda drives on the left, while Rwanda drives on the right.
Best Time to Visit and Where to Stay
Lake Bunyonyi is pleasant all year, thanks to its altitude of almost 2,000 metres. The drier months, June to August and December to February, bring clearer skies and easier roads. However, the green seasons are quieter and the hills look their best.
Evenings can be cool, so pack a warm layer. Also bring insect repellent and sunscreen for days on the water.
Accommodation options
You can choose from simple campsites, mid-range lakeside lodges and a few island retreats. Some lodges sit on islands, so you leave the car at a jetty and take a boat across. Ask us which lodges have safe parking before you book.
