Lake Kivu Road Trip: Car Hire Routes and Scenic Stops

Lake Kivu stretches along almost the whole of Rwanda’s western border, and a road follows its shore from north to south. A Lake Kivu road trip links three very different towns: lively Rubavu, peaceful Karongi and the quiet border town of Rusizi. This guide lays out the routes, the best stops on each stretch and how many days you really need.

Planning Your Lake Kivu Road Trip Route

Think of the trip as three legs. First you drive from Kigali to the lake, then you follow the shore south, and finally you loop back to Kigali. The direction is up to you, but each order has advantages.

North to south

Start in Rubavu via Musanze, drive down the shore to Karongi and Rusizi, then return through Nyungwe. This suits travellers who want gorillas at the start and chimps near the end.

South to north

Head first to Nyungwe and Rusizi, then work north to Rubavu and return via Musanze. It’s a good choice if your gorilla permit falls late in the trip.

How many days?

  • Four days: lake only, with one night in each town.
  • Six days: lake plus gorillas or chimps.
  • Eight days or more: lake, Volcanoes and Nyungwe at a relaxed pace.

Leg One: Kigali to the Northern Shore

The drive from Kigali to Rubavu takes around 3–3.5 hours on a good paved road. You pass through Musanze, where the Virunga volcanoes rise on clear days. It’s a natural place to stop for lunch or stay a night for gorilla trekking.

Rubavu itself is the most developed lake town, with beaches, hotels and a busy waterfront. Spend at least one night here before heading south. For a closer look at the town, see our Lake Kivu guide.

Leg Two: Rubavu to Karongi Along the Shore

This is the most beautiful stretch of the trip. The road climbs high above the water, then drops into bays lined with banana groves and fishing villages. Expect tight bends and steep gradients, so allow most of a morning or afternoon.

Stops worth making

  • Viewpoints above the lake: pull over safely for wide views of islands and the DRC hills opposite.
  • Coffee and tea country: the hills grow both, and some washing stations welcome visitors.
  • Village markets: great for fresh fruit and a feel for local life.

The Congo Nile Trail, a long hiking and biking route, runs through this area too. If you like walking, park up and do a short section before continuing.

Karongi: The Calm Middle of the Lake

Karongi, once called Kibuye, sits on a deep, island-dotted bay. It’s quieter than Rubavu and perfect for a slow day. Many travellers say it’s their favourite stop.

  • Take a boat to Napoleon Island, home to a large colony of fruit bats.
  • Visit Amahoro Island or simply swim from your hotel’s jetty.
  • Paddle a kayak in the sheltered bays early in the morning.
  • Pause at the Kibuye memorial church, a quiet place of remembrance.

Boats and guides are easy to arrange in town. Leave the car at your hotel and enjoy a day on the water. Two nights here is ideal if your schedule allows, because the drive in and out takes up much of each travel day.

Leg Three: Karongi to Rusizi and Back to Kigali

South of Karongi, the shore road continues towards Rusizi, formerly Cyangugu. This section is quieter, with fewer tourists and more rural scenery. It’s again slow going, so treat it as a full travel day with breaks.

Rusizi sits at the lake’s southern tip, beside the DRC border town of Bukavu. From here, the road east climbs straight into Nyungwe National Park. Chimp tracking and the canopy walkway make a great final highlight.

The drive from Nyungwe back to Kigali takes about 5–6 hours. Break it with a night in Huye if you want to see the national museum there.

Best Car Hire for a Lake Kivu Road Trip

The main roads along the route are now largely paved, but they’re narrow, steep and winding. Side roads to viewpoints, coffee stations and lodges are often dirt.

Driving Tips for the Lakeshore Roads

  • Rwanda drives on the right. Speed cameras and police checks are common on main roads.
  • Drive in daylight only, because bends are sharp and street lighting is rare.
  • Use a low gear on long descents to save your brakes.
  • Fill the tank in Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi, as rural fuel stops are scarce.
  • Download offline maps, since signal fades in some valleys.

Also, keep cash for boat trips and small shops, which may not take cards.

Best season for the lake

The dry months from June to September give clear views across the water and dusty but firm side roads. December to February is also pleasant. In the rainy seasons, the scenery turns deep green, yet afternoon storms can roll in fast over the lake. So plan boat trips for the morning and drive the twistiest sections before the clouds build.

Lake Kivu Road Trip FAQs

Is the lakeshore road paved all the way?

The main road is now largely paved. However, side tracks to viewpoints and some lodges are dirt and can be muddy after rain.

Which lake town should I choose if I only have one night?

Karongi for calm and islands, or Rubavu for beaches and nightlife. Both are lovely.

Can I do a one-way trip and drop the car elsewhere?

Ask when booking. Most travellers loop back to Kigali, but other arrangements may be possible.

How do I add gorilla trekking to the route?

Stop in Musanze on the way to Rubavu. The gorilla permit is US$1,500 and must be booked for a fixed date.
