How many days do you really need to see mountain gorillas, and how should the rest of the trip fit around them? Good gorilla trekking trip planning answers those questions before you book a single lodge. Here we look at trip length, where to stay, fitness, combinations with other parks and how a rental car ties it all together.
How Long Should a Gorilla Trip Be?
Volcanoes National Park is only 2–2.5 hours from Kigali. That makes Rwanda one of the quickest places in Africa to reach the gorillas. Still, the right trip length depends on what else you want to see.
| Trip length | What it covers | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Dawn drive from Kigali, trek, return the same evening. | Business travellers with one free day. |
| 2–3 days | Gorillas plus golden monkeys or the Dian Fossey hike. | Short holidays focused on primates. |
| 5 days | Gorillas, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe chimpanzees. | First-time visitors wanting variety. |
| 7+ days | Add Akagera for savannah game drives. | Travellers wanting a full Rwanda safari. |
The one-day option works, but it is tiring. You leave Kigali around 4:30 a.m., trek for several hours, then drive back. For most people, at least one night near the park is worth it.
Gorilla Trekking Trip Planning: Where to Stay
Where you sleep shapes the whole experience. There are three main bases.
Kinigi, next to the park
Lodges here sit minutes from park headquarters. As a result, your trek morning is relaxed. Options range from simple guesthouses to some of Africa’s most exclusive lodges.
Musanze town
About 20–30 minutes from Kinigi, Musanze has hotels for every budget, plus restaurants, banks and fuel. It is a practical base for self-drivers.
Twin lakes or Lake Kivu
Lakes Burera and Ruhondo offer scenic, quiet stays within reach of the park. Rubavu on Lake Kivu is further away, so treat it as a next-day destination rather than a trek-day base.

Fitness and What the Trek Is Like
Treks start at altitude, often above 2,500 metres. Depending on which family you visit, the hike can take from about one hour to several hours each way. Paths are steep, muddy and covered in nettles.
At the briefing, rangers try to match groups to fitness levels. So tell them honestly if you prefer a shorter walk. Hiring a porter helps a lot, because they carry your bag and lend a steady hand on slippery slopes. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old.
Prepare at home
- Walk hills or stairs for a few weeks before the trip.
- Break in waterproof hiking boots.
- Pack gloves, long sleeves and a rain jacket.
Combining Gorillas With Other Parks
Most visitors add at least one more region. Rwanda is compact, so combinations are easy by car.
Gorillas and chimpanzees
Nyungwe Forest is the place for chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk. It is a long drive, so many travellers go via Lake Kivu and break the journey. Our 5 days budget chimps and gorillas trip follows this route.
Gorillas and the savannah
Akagera, about 2.5 hours east of Kigali, offers big game and boat trips. Pair it with Volcanoes for a classic “primates and plains” itinerary.
Rwanda and Uganda together
Some travellers trek in both countries. Uganda’s Bwindi and Mgahinga are reachable from Musanze through the Cyanika border. Remember that Uganda drives on the left. See the 15 days Uganda and Rwanda safari for ideas.
Budgeting the Trip
The permit is the largest single cost. The widely published Rwanda price is US$1,500 per person, set by RDB, so confirm it when you book. After that, your main costs are lodges, the vehicle and any guides or porters.
A self-drive rental keeps transport costs down for couples and families. On the other hand, a car with a driver adds a daily fee but saves you stress on early starts. Either way, book permits and vehicles early for June to September.
Choosing a Car for the Trip
A 4×4 matters most on trek day, when you drive from Kinigi to the trailhead. Some of these village tracks are steep and rocky. For the rest of the trip, paved roads dominate.
- Couples, dry season: a Toyota RAV4 is usually enough.
- Families or rainy months: a Land Cruiser Prado gives more clearance.
- Adding Akagera: a Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof is ideal.
Prefer not to drive? Our car hire with driver option suits short trips well.
Common Mistakes in Gorilla Trekking Trip Planning
We see the same few errors every season. Fortunately, each one is easy to avoid.
- Booking flights before permits. Permits sell out first in peak months, so confirm the date before anything else.
- Trekking on arrival day. Long-haul flights and a 7 a.m. briefing do not mix. Allow at least one night to rest.
- Underestimating drive times. Hilly roads are slow, and Nyungwe is 5–6 hours from Kigali.
- Packing only for heat. Mornings near the volcanoes are cold and often wet.
- Forgetting cash. Porters, tips and village craft stalls usually need Rwandan francs.
Also, avoid planning a long drive on the afternoon after your trek. Many people return tired and muddy, so a short hop to a nearby lodge is kinder. If you must move on, go no further than Lake Kivu that day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is one day enough to see the gorillas?
It is possible, but a night near the park makes the day far easier and safer.
What is the best month for a gorilla trip?
June to September is driest. However, gorillas can be seen all year, and wet months are quieter.
Can children join the trek?
Only from age 15. Younger children can enjoy nearby activities such as the twin lakes or the caves.
Do I need to book everything in advance?
Yes. Secure the permit first, then lodges and your car, especially in peak season.
