Rubavu sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, with sandy beaches, palm-lined streets and views across to the Congolese hills. A Rubavu Lake Kivu car rental lets you reach it in about three to three and a half hours from Kigali, then explore the shoreline at your own pace. Here is how to plan the drive, pick a vehicle and spend your days by the lake.
Getting to Rubavu by Road
Most travellers drive from Kigali via Musanze. The road is paved and scenic, climbing through tea and potato country before dropping to the lake at Gisenyi, Rubavu’s main town. Allow three to three and a half hours without stops.
Because the route passes Musanze, it pairs naturally with gorilla trekking. Many visitors trek in Volcanoes National Park first, then continue about an hour and a half west to relax by the water.
Driving tips for the western road
- Rwanda drives on the right; the descent into Rubavu has sharp bends, so use lower gears.
- Trucks heading for the Congo border move slowly on climbs. Overtake only with clear sight.
- Fuel is easy to find in Musanze and Rubavu.
- Plan to arrive in daylight; the lakeside roads are busy with pedestrians in the evening.

Picking a Vehicle for a Rubavu Lake Kivu Car Rental
Your choice depends on whether you stay in town or head down the lakeshore. The road from Kigali is tarmac, so almost any car manages the main drive. However, the side roads along the lake are another matter.
Compact SUV for town and tarmac
If you plan to stay around Gisenyi’s beaches and cafés, a compact SUV such as a RAV4 is enough. It is easy to park, light on fuel and comfortable on the paved highway. Our SUV car rental in Kigali covers these options.
Land Cruiser for the lakeshore road
The road south from Rubavu to Karongi and Rusizi winds over steep ridges. Sections are paved, but detours, landslides and rough patches appear in the rainy season. A Safari Land Cruiser or Prado handles these with ease and carries more luggage.
Rooftop tent 4×4
Several lakeside lodges and campsites welcome campers. A rooftop tent vehicle lets you wake up to sunrise over the water and keep accommodation costs down. Ask the site before arrival, as space is limited.
Things to Do in Rubavu
Rubavu is a place to slow down after the mountains. Still, there is plenty to fill two or three days.
On the water
Boat trips leave from the Gisenyi waterfront and nearby hotels. Popular outings visit small islands, fishing villages and hot springs at the lake edge. Evening trips let you watch fishermen set off, singing as they row their wooden boats in formation. For a fuller look at cruise options, read about the Lake Kivu boat cruise experience.
On land
- Public beach: swim or kayak in calm water near the town centre.
- Coffee tours: visit a washing station in the hills and see beans processed.
- Rubavu market: browse fabrics, fruit and local crafts.
- Brewery and hot springs: short drives along the lakeshore north of town.
- Congo Nile Trail: hike or cycle stages of this long route along the shore.
A simple three-day plan
On day one, drive from Kigali or Musanze and settle in with a sunset walk along the waterfront. On day two, take a morning boat trip to the islands, then visit a coffee washing station in the afternoon. On day three, swim or kayak early, then either drive back to Kigali or head south along the lake.
Driving the Lakeshore South
With your own 4×4, the lakeshore road becomes one of Rwanda’s great drives. It runs from Rubavu to Karongi (Kibuye) and on to Rusizi near Nyungwe. Every bend reveals another bay, island or terraced hillside.
Suggested stages
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Rubavu to Karongi | Winding hills, coffee farms, many viewpoints. Allow most of a morning. |
| Karongi | Calm bays, island boat trips, quiet guesthouses. |
| Karongi to Rusizi | Remote stretches and tea estates; good base for Nyungwe. |
Drive slowly and plan full days. Distances are short, but the bends and photo stops add up. From Rusizi, you can enter Nyungwe National Park for chimpanzees and the canopy walk.
Where to Stay and Park Safely
Rubavu has options from beachfront hotels to small guesthouses. Most have secure parking, but always confirm when you book. Park inside a compound overnight rather than on the street.
In busy areas near the beach, keep bags out of sight and lock the car each time you leave it. Also note that the Grande Barrière border with Goma is in town. Do not drive into DR Congo without written cross-border permission on your rental agreement.
Best Time to Visit Lake Kivu
The dry months, June to September and December to February, bring clear skies and easier driving. The lakeshore road is at its best then. However, rain in March to May and October to November rarely lasts all day, and the hills turn deep green.
If you travel in the wet season, choose a 4×4 for the lakeshore route. Also leave extra time between towns in case of road works or slow traffic.
