Rwanda Safari Camping Guide Using Rooftop Tent Vehicles

Camping turns a Rwanda safari into something wilder and more personal. You cook under the stars, hear the bush wake up at dawn, and choose your own pace. This Rwanda safari camping guide covers how to plan a full camping safari with a rooftop tent vehicle: the route, the shopping, wildlife safety and the habits that keep camp life easy.

How a Rooftop Tent Safari Works

Your vehicle is both transport and bedroom. A tent folds out on the roof each evening, and you climb a ladder to a mattress above the ground. In the morning, you pack it away in minutes and drive on.

Most rooftop tent vehicles are Land Cruisers or Hilux pickups. Both come with 4WD, which matters on campsite access tracks. Camping kits can include a stove, cookware, chairs, a table and a cool box, but contents vary. So check the full list in your quote before you pack.

Compared with a lodge safari, you trade some comfort for freedom and closeness to nature. Many travellers mix the two: camping in the parks, with the odd lodge or hotel night for a hot shower and a proper bed.

A Seven-Day Camping Safari Route

Rwanda is compact, so a week covers the highlights without exhausting drives. Here is a route built around camping, with lodge nights where camping is limited.

DayPlanSleep
1Collect vehicle in Kigali, shop for supplies, drive to Akagera (about 2.5 hours)Akagera campsite
2Full day of game drives and a boat trip on Lake IhemaAkagera campsite
3Dawn drive in the north of the park, then back to KigaliKigali hotel

6Drive to Lake KivuLakeside camping
7Relax by the lake, then return to Kigali (about 3–3.5 hours)End of trip

Add Nyungwe if you have more time. It is 5–6 hours from Kigali, so give it at least two nights. For details on each park, see our Akagera and Volcanoes guides.

Stocking Up in Kigali

Kigali has well-stocked supermarkets, and Kimironko Market is great for fresh produce. Once you leave the city, choice drops quickly, especially near Akagera. So do one big shop before you set off.

Shopping list for a week

  • Drinking water in large bottles, plus a refill plan.
  • Easy one-pot meals: pasta, rice, sauces, tinned beans.
  • Breakfast basics: oats, bread, eggs, coffee and tea.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables that travel well, like bananas, avocados and carrots.
  • Snacks for long game drives.
  • Ice for the cool box, topped up in towns.
  • Rubbish bags, washing-up liquid and a sponge.

Also buy firelighters and matches if you plan campfires, but check campsite rules first.

Wildlife Safety at Camp

Camping in or near a game park means sharing space with wild animals. Most encounters are harmless if you follow simple rules.

  • Camp only at designated sites, and follow ranger advice.
  • Never leave food in the tent or outside overnight. Store it in the vehicle.
  • Do not walk around camp after dark without a torch.
  • Keep a safe distance from hippos near the lake shore, especially at night.
  • Never feed animals, including monkeys and baboons.

Sleeping on the roof keeps you off the ground and away from curious visitors. Still, zip the tent fully and keep shoes inside so nothing crawls into them.

Weather and Seasons for Camping

Rwanda’s climate is mild, but altitude and rain make a big difference to camp life.

  • June to September: the main dry season. Best for camping, with clear skies and dry tracks.
  • December to February: a shorter dry season, also very good.
  • March to May: the long rains. Expect muddy campsites and plan more lodge nights.
  • October to November: short rains, usually in afternoon bursts.

Akagera is warm, while the Volcanoes area and Nyungwe get cold at night. Therefore, pack a fleece, a warm hat and a sleeping bag liner whatever the season.

Camp Routines That Make Life Easy

A little structure saves a lot of time. After a couple of nights, these habits become second nature.

  1. Arrive by mid-afternoon. Set up in daylight and enjoy the evening.
  2. Divide jobs. One person opens the tent, another starts the stove.
  3. Cook simply. One-pot dinners mean less washing up.
  4. Pack the night before. Early game drives start before sunrise.
  5. Leave no trace. Take all rubbish with you and dispose of it in town.

Rwanda Safari Camping Guide to Water, Power and Washing

These three basics decide how comfortable your trip feels. Plan for them, and camping stays fun rather than tiring.

Water

Carry more than you think you need. Allow several litres per person per day for drinking, plus extra for cooking and washing up. Refill in towns, and do not count on drinkable tap water at campsites.

Power

Ask whether your vehicle has a charging socket or inverter. Bring a power bank and charging cables for phones and cameras. Then charge everything while you drive.

Washing

Some campsites have showers, but facilities vary. Pack biodegradable soap, a quick-dry towel and wet wipes. A hotel night every few days also helps.

Choosing a Vehicle for This Rwanda Safari Camping Guide

Your vehicle choice depends on what matters more: game viewing or carrying gear.

  • Land Cruiser with rooftop tent: pop-up roof versions are best for Akagera game drives.
  • Hilux with rooftop tent: an open load bed for gear, ideal for practical campers.

Our car rental with camping gear page explains the options. Either way, ask for a demonstration of the tent at pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I camp anywhere in Rwanda?

No. Wild camping is generally not allowed, especially in national parks. Use designated campsites or hotels that allow camping.

Do I need to book campsites in advance?

For Akagera, yes, especially in the dry season. Other sites are often more flexible, but call ahead.

Is camping cheaper than lodges?

Usually, yes, because campsite fees are lower than lodge rates. However, you also pay for the camping equipment, so compare total costs.

Can we camp near the gorillas?

Not inside the park. Most campers stay in a lodge near Volcanoes for the trekking day.
