Sleeping on the roof of a Land Cruiser in Akagera is one of the most memorable ways to see Rwanda. This guide helps you plan a Rwanda camping safari Land Cruiser trip park by park. You’ll learn where you can camp, what the kit includes and how to drive the routes safely.
It’s written for self-drivers and small groups who want to trade some lodge comfort for freedom, early starts and a lower accommodation bill.
How a Rwanda Camping Safari Land Cruiser Is Set Up
A camping Land Cruiser is a normal safari 4×4 with a rooftop tent bolted to a roof rack. The tent folds out in a few minutes and sits on a ladder at the side or rear. Because you sleep off the ground, you stay dry on wet nights and away from insects and curious animals.

What the camping package usually includes
- Rooftop tent with a foam mattress
- Sleeping bags or bedding and pillows
- Gas stove, pots, plates, cups and cutlery
- Camping table and folding chairs
- Cool box or fridge (confirm which when you book)
- Water container and a torch or lantern
Confirm the exact list before you leave Kigali. You can see the full setup on our car rental with camping gear page.
Which Land Cruiser model to pick
The Land Cruiser Safari with a pop-up roof is the classic choice for game drives. It has room for luggage, water and food boxes. A Prado or TXL also carries a rooftop tent well and suits couples. For two tents and four people, ask about a Hilux Double Cab with a canopy for storage.
Camping Park by Park
Rwanda doesn’t allow wild camping inside its national parks. Instead, you use designated campsites or lodges that welcome campers. Here is how that works in each park.
Akagera National Park
Akagera is the best park in Rwanda for a camping safari. It has designated campsites inside the park, and you book them through park reception or the official park booking channels. Expect basic facilities, so arrive with water and firewood rules checked in advance.
Akagera’s main gate is about 2.5 hours from Kigali. Plan to arrive by early afternoon, pitch the tent, then do a late game drive. Self-drivers must be at camp before dark, while guided night drives are run by the park. Our Akagera National Park guide covers the tracks and wildlife in more detail.
Volcanoes National Park
You can’t camp inside Volcanoes National Park itself. However, several lodges and community campsites around Kinigi and Musanze accept rooftop-tent vehicles. That puts you close to the park headquarters for the early gorilla briefing.
Musanze is about 2–2.5 hours from Kigali on good tarmac. Gorilla permits are issued by RDB and cost US$1,500 per person, so book them long before your car.
Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe is high, cool and very wet. Camping options are limited and change, so check with the park before you rely on them. Many campers spend a night at a guesthouse nearby, then camp again on the drive back. Allow 5–6 hours from Kigali.
Lake Kivu
Kivu isn’t a wildlife park, but it is a popular stop between parks. Some lakeside guesthouses in Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi let you camp in their grounds. Rubavu is around 3–3.5 hours from Kigali.
A Sample 6-Day Camping Loop
This route links Rwanda’s two savannah-and-forest extremes and keeps daily drives manageable.
- Day 1: Collect the Land Cruiser in Kigali, shop for food, drive to Akagera and camp.
- Day 2: Full day of game drives in the north of Akagera. Second night at camp.
- Day 3: Early drive out, back through Kigali to Musanze. Camp near Kinigi.
- Day 4: Gorilla or golden monkey trek. Evening by the campfire.
- Day 5: Drive to Rubavu and camp by Lake Kivu.
- Day 6: Return to Kigali and drop off the vehicle.
For longer trips with Nyungwe added, our Rwanda road trip ideas give more route options.
Practical Tips for Camping From a Land Cruiser
Food and water
Stock up in Kigali, where supermarkets are well supplied. Musanze and Rubavu also have shops, but choice is smaller. Carry at least 20 litres of drinking water, especially in Akagera, where taps can be far apart.
Weather and seasons
The long dry season runs from June to September, and it’s the easiest time to camp. The short dry spell in December to February is also good. In the rainy months, tents stay dry on the roof, but campsite ground turns muddy and tracks get slippery.
Driving rules
- Rwanda drives on the right.
- Don’t drive after dark between towns or inside parks.
- Keep the tent folded and strapped before moving the car.
- Check roof clearance at fuel stations and lodge gates with the tent closed.
Wildlife safety at camp
Store food in the vehicle, not in the tent or on the table. Never feed animals, and keep a torch beside you at night. If an animal comes close, stay in the tent or the cab and wait quietly.
Budgeting a Rwanda Camping Safari Land Cruiser Trip
Camping saves money on beds, yet some costs stay the same. Your main spending lines are the vehicle hire, the camping kit add-on, fuel, park entry and campsite fees. Park and activity fees are set by RDB and change, so check current rates before you go.
To keep the total down, travel in a group of three or four and share the vehicle. Cooking your own meals also helps a lot. Our cheap car rental tips explain where else you can save.

Camping Safari FAQ
Can I camp anywhere along the road?
No. Use designated campsites or lodges and guesthouses that give permission. Roadside camping can cause problems with local authorities and landowners.
How many people fit in one rooftop tent?
Most rooftop tents sleep two adults. For a family of four, ask for a second tent or a ground tent as an extra.
Is it safe to camp in Akagera with lions and elephants around?
Yes, when you follow park rules. Stay at the official campsite, keep food locked in the car and stay inside after dark.
Do I need a driver for a camping safari?
Not necessarily. Many couples self-drive. However, a driver-guide helps with spotting wildlife and setting up camp if this is your first trip.
