Mileage and fuel policy
Some deals include unlimited kilometres, while others set a daily limit. If you plan long drives to Nyungwe or the Ugandan border, a limit can add up fast. Likewise, confirm whether you return the car full or at the same level you received it.

The fourth of the checks before renting a car is the vehicle itself. A small saloon is fine around Kigali. However, it may struggle on the gravel tracks inside national parks or on wet rural roads.

When the car arrives, walk around it with the person delivering it. Take photos of any scratches, dents or chips, and make sure they are noted on the handover form. Then test the lights, wipers, horn, air conditioning and four-wheel-drive switch.
