A Mount Bisoke day hike is one of the best adventures you can have in Rwanda outside gorilla trekking. In a single day, you climb through bamboo and giant lobelias to a beautiful crater lake at the summit. This guide explains the route, timings, what to pack and how to get there by car.
Why Do a Mount Bisoke Day Hike?
Mount Bisoke, also called Visoke, rises to 3,711 metres (12,175 feet) in Volcanoes National Park. Its name comes from Kinyarwanda and roughly means “soaked in water”. That name fits well, because a crater lake fills the top of the volcano.
Bisoke is part of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of eight main volcanoes along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. Its neighbours include Karisimbi, Sabyinyo and Muhabura. The summit sits right on the Rwanda–Congo border, so you get views into both countries on a clear day.
The hike suits both experienced and first-time hikers. In addition, it fits neatly into a gorilla trip, since it starts from the same park headquarters at Kinigi.
What You See on the Way Up
The trail climbs through several vegetation zones. First, you cross farmland and enter bamboo forest. Next comes the Hagenia–Hypericum forest, draped in moss and old man’s beard. Finally, you reach the alpine zone, where giant lobelias and groundsels grow around the crater.
Wildlife is a bonus rather than a promise. You may spot golden monkeys, buffalo signs and many forest birds. Occasionally, hikers also meet mountain gorillas near the trail, though you need a separate gorilla permit to visit a family.
The crater lake
The summit crater holds a lake roughly 400 metres across. On a clear day, the water looks deep green and the views stretch across the Virunga chain. However, mist often rolls in fast, so enjoy the view while it lasts.
Mount Bisoke Day Hike: Step by Step
Briefing at Kinigi (7:00 am)
Be at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 am. Rangers give a briefing on safety and park rules, which usually ends around 8:00 am. They also assign your group to armed rangers who guide and protect you on the mountain.
The rangers are experienced and often come from the Kinigi area. They usually speak English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili, so ask them plenty of questions.
Drive to the trailhead
From headquarters, it is a drive of about 30–40 minutes to the start of the trail. The last stretch is a rough, rocky road, so a 4×4 makes life much easier. Use this short ride to get your gear ready.
The climb and descent
The lower slopes are gentle, but the trail gets steep and muddy higher up. Most hikers take 3–5 hours to reach the summit and 2–3 hours to come down. Overall, plan for about 6–8 hours, depending on your fitness and the weather.
Walk at your own pace, because the goal is to reach the top safely. Rangers hand out walking sticks for the steep parts. Moreover, you can hire a local porter to carry your bag, which also supports the community.
At the summit
The weather decides how long you stay at the top. On sunny days, many hikers enjoy a picnic lunch beside the crater. If it is cold and misty, you will likely take photos and head down sooner.
Preparing for Your Hike
Bisoke is a tough day out because of the altitude, mud and steep sections. So prepare well and you will enjoy it far more.
- Waterproof hiking boots with good grip.
- Rain jacket and a warm layer for the cold summit.
- Long trousers tucked into socks to protect against nettles and ants.
- Garden gloves for gripping roots and branches.
- At least two litres of water, plus a packed lunch and snacks.
- Your passport, which you need at the park office.
Permits and fees
You need a Bisoke hiking permit from the Rwanda Development Board. Permit prices are set by RDB and change, so check the current fee before you travel. We can book the permit for you as part of your car hire.
Fitness tips
You don’t need to be an athlete, yet regular walking in the weeks before your trip helps a lot. If possible, spend a night in Musanze first so your body adjusts to the altitude.
Best Time to Hike Mount Bisoke
You can hike Bisoke all year. Still, the dry seasons, June to September and December to February, give firmer trails and clearer views of the crater lake. In the rainy months, expect thick mud and more mist at the top.
Whatever the season, the weather can change within minutes. So always carry rain gear, even if the morning looks bright. Early starts also help, because clouds tend to build after midday.
Getting There: Car Hire for a Mount Bisoke Day Hike
Kinigi is about 2–2.5 hours’ drive from Kigali on a good tarmac road through the hills. Because briefing starts at 7:00 am, most hikers stay near Musanze or Kinigi the night before. Alternatively, leave Kigali very early, around 4:30 am.
