An Akagera National Park tour is the easiest way to see big game in Rwanda. The park lies in the east of the country, about 2.5 hours from Kigali, and it is home to the Big Five. This guide covers wildlife, activities, where to stay and how to get there in a rental 4×4.
Rwanda is famous as the land of a thousand hills, with green landscapes and rich wildlife. However, many visitors don’t realise it also has a classic savannah park. With a vehicle from 4×4 Car Rental Rwanda, you can explore it at your own pace. Our fleet of 4×4 vehicles is built for these roads.
About Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park sits in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. It covers more than 1,200 square kilometres. Inside, you will find savannah, swamps, lakes and woodland.
Because the habitats are so varied, the park supports a wide range of animals. So it is a must for nature lovers, especially if you are also tracking gorillas elsewhere in Rwanda.
Wildlife you can see
Akagera is home to the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos. In addition, you can see giraffes, zebras, many antelope species and hippos. The park also records over 500 bird species, including the rare shoebill.
Lions and rhinos were reintroduced in recent years, and numbers are growing. Even so, sightings are never guaranteed, so give yourself enough time in the park.

Things to Do on an Akagera National Park Tour
1. Game drives
Game drives are the main activity. You can drive yourself, or hire a park guide to ride with you. Early morning and late afternoon are best, because animals are most active then. The northern plains are usually the most productive area for big game.
2. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema
A boat trip on Lake Ihema shows you hippos, crocodiles and many water birds up close. It gives you a different view of wildlife that you can’t see from the road. Book a slot when you arrive at the park gate, as trips run at set times.
3. Bird watching
With its mix of wetlands and open plains, Akagera is a birdwatcher’s dream. Bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom. The lake shores and papyrus swamps are especially rewarding.
4. Camping
For a more immersive trip, spend a night under the stars at one of the park campsites. Our self-drive and camping safaris include rooftop tents and gear. You can also read about our car rental with camping gear.
Self-Drive Safari in Akagera: Tips
A self-drive safari gives you freedom to stop wherever you like. Our vehicles handle the park’s gravel and sandy tracks well. Still, a few simple rules make the day smoother.
- Enter early. Arrive at the south gate soon after opening for the best wildlife.
- Allow the full day. The drive from south to north takes several hours with game stops.
- Stay in the car. Only get out at marked spots, because dangerous animals live here.
- Fill up in Kigali or Kayonza. There is no fuel inside the park.
- Carry water and snacks. Shops are few once you leave the main road.
Park entry and activity fees are set by the park authority and change from time to time. So check current rates before you go.

Accommodation Options
Akagera offers a range of places to stay for different budgets. You can choose comfortable lodges, tented camps or simple campsites. If you prefer a planned trip, see our 2-day Akagera 4×4 wildlife safari, and we can help with bookings.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit is the dry season, from June to September. During these months, grass is short and animals gather near water. However, the park is open year-round, and the green season brings fewer crowds and lovely birding. Our travel advice section helps you plan.
Getting to Akagera National Park from Kigali
Akagera is about a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali to the south gate. That makes it ideal for a long day trip or a relaxed weekend. The road is tarmac most of the way, then gravel for the final stretch.
We can meet you on arrival with Kigali airport car rental. Alternatively, we deliver in the city or arrange airport transfer services. See also our Kigali Airport page.
Which vehicle should you choose?
- Land Cruiser Safari: pop-up roof for game viewing, best for families and groups.
- Toyota RAV4: a budget choice for couples on a dry-season trip.
- Land Cruiser Prado: comfortable and capable for mixed city and park driving.
