Many international rental companies insist on a credit card for the deposit. That shuts out travellers who use debit cards, prefer cash, or come from countries where credit cards are uncommon. In Rwanda, car hire without credit card is possible, and this guide explains the payment options, how deposits work and how to stay safe when paying.
The aim is simple: you secure the right vehicle with a payment method that suits you, and you get your deposit back without fuss.

Why Car Hire Without Credit Card Works in Rwanda
Big global brands use credit cards mainly to place a security hold. Local Rwandan companies often work differently. They know the customer, the vehicle and the route, so they can accept other forms of deposit.
That flexibility helps many people: backpackers with debit cards only, residents paying locally, NGOs paying by invoice, and travellers who simply prefer not to use credit. Always confirm the accepted methods for your booking in your written quote.
Payment Options Explained
| Method | When it works best | Things to note |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer | Paying a booking deposit from abroad | Allow several days to clear; your bank may charge fees |
| Mobile money | Residents and visitors with a local SIM | Fast and traceable; keep the confirmation message |
| Cash at handover | Travellers who prefer cash | Count it together and get a signed receipt |
| Debit card | Travellers without a credit card | Check your daily limit and foreign transaction fees |
Bank transfers
International transfers are reliable but slow. So send booking deposits early, ideally a week or more before arrival. Also send us the payment confirmation, so we can match it to your booking quickly.
Mobile money
Mobile money is used everywhere in Rwanda. If you buy a local SIM at the airport, you can register and pay this way during your stay. It is handy for extending your rental mid-trip.
Before sending money, double-check the registered name that appears on screen. If it does not match the company you booked with, stop and call us to confirm.
Cash
Cash works well, especially for the security deposit at handover. Carry it safely, and do not hand it over without a receipt. US dollars in good condition or Rwandan francs are the usual options; confirm which in your quote.
How the Security Deposit Works
Almost every rental includes a refundable security deposit. It covers fuel shortfalls, late return or damage within your excess. With a credit card, this is a hold. Without one, it is usually paid and then refunded.
- The deposit amount is stated in your written quote.
- You pay it at handover by an agreed method.
- You receive a receipt showing the amount and method.
- At return, we check the vehicle and fuel together.
- The deposit is refunded, minus any agreed charges, by the method agreed.
Ask how long the refund takes for your method. Cash refunds are immediate, while bank refunds take longer.
A Step-by-Step Booking Example
Here is how a typical booking works for a traveller without a credit card.
- You send your dates, route and preferred vehicle by WhatsApp or email.
- We reply with a written quote, including the deposit and accepted payment methods.
- You pay the booking deposit by bank transfer or mobile money and send the slip.
- We confirm the booking in writing.
- At handover, you pay the balance and the security deposit, in cash or by debit card, and receive receipts.
Every step leaves a paper trail. As a result, both sides know exactly what has been paid and what remains.
Paying for Costs During Your Trip
Beyond the rental itself, you will pay for fuel, parking, food and park fees. Fuel stations in towns usually accept cash, and many also take cards or mobile money. Parking attendants in Kigali generally prefer small cash notes.
Park and permit fees are paid to the park or the Rwanda Development Board, not to us. Check which payment methods they accept before you arrive, so you are not caught out at the gate.
Documents You Still Need
Paying without a credit card does not remove the need for identification. In fact, it makes good paperwork more important.
- A valid passport or national ID.
- A valid driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if you have one.
- Your flight details or local address.
- For companies and NGOs, an official letter or purchase order.
These documents give both sides confidence. They also speed up the handover.
Staying Safe When Paying Without a Credit Card
Credit cards offer chargeback protection. Without one, you need to be careful about who you pay. Follow these rules:
- Pay only a registered company, never a stranger on social media.
- Get a written quote and agreement before sending money.
- Check that the account name matches the company name.
- Keep every receipt, transfer slip and mobile money message.
- Be wary of anyone demanding full payment by urgent transfer.
A genuine operator will welcome these checks. You can read more about our process on the car rental Rwanda page.
Car Hire Without Credit Card for Budget Travellers
Travellers on a budget often have debit cards only. The good news is that budget-friendly vehicles are easy to book this way.
The Toyota RAV4 is a popular choice for couples. It is economical, easy to drive and fine for main roads and good gravel. Our cheap car rental page lists more affordable options.
Cross-Border Trips and Payment
If you plan to drive into Uganda or Tanzania, extra documents and regional insurance are needed. These add costs, so include them in your quote and pay them before travel.
Remember that Uganda and Tanzania drive on the left, unlike Rwanda. Learn more on our cross-border car hire page.
