Money questions often come up just before a booking: can I pay by card, do I need dollars, and how does the deposit work? Getting these answers early avoids surprises at the pickup desk. This guide explains the main Rwanda car rental payment options, from cards and cash to mobile money and refundable deposits.

What You Pay, and When
Payments usually happen in three stages. Knowing them helps you plan cash flow before and during the trip.
- At booking: a booking deposit secures your vehicle and dates, which matters most in peak season.
- Before or at pickup: you settle the balance and provide the refundable security deposit.
- At drop-off: any extras are settled, such as an extra day, a fuel top-up or an approved repair.
We confirm each amount in writing, so you always know what is still due.
Traffic fines during your hire
Rwanda uses many speed cameras, and fines are linked to the vehicle’s plate. If a fine arrives for your rental period, it is your responsibility. It may be settled from your deposit or paid directly, so drive within the limits and keep your agreement handy.
Paying by Card
Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in Kigali for bookings and hotel bills. Many travellers pay the booking deposit by card online, then settle the balance before pickup.
Avoid a blocked card
Banks often block card payments from Rwanda as a precaution. So tell your bank your travel dates before you leave. Also carry a second card from a different bank in case one fails.
Card fees
Some international card payments attract processing fees. Ask us when you book whether a card fee applies, so the total is clear upfront.
Paying in Cash
Cash still matters in Rwanda, especially outside Kigali. You can pay a rental balance in US dollars or Rwandan francs.
US dollar notes
If you bring dollars, use notes dated 2013 or later. Older, torn or marked notes are often refused by banks and businesses. Larger denominations also tend to get better exchange rates.
Rwandan francs
Withdraw francs from ATMs at the airport or in town. You will need them for fuel upcountry, parking, snacks and small tips. Fuel stations in smaller towns may not take cards.
Mobile Money
Mobile money is part of daily life in Rwanda. Many shops, fuel stations and restaurants accept it. If you are staying for a while, a local SIM with a mobile money account is very handy.
Ask us whether mobile money suits your booking, as it depends on the payment stage. For short-stay visitors, cards and cash are usually simpler. However, longer-term renters and expats often use mobile money for extensions or small extras.
How the Security Deposit Works
Most self-drive rentals need a refundable security deposit. It covers possible damage, traffic fines or a missing fuel top-up during the hire.
Card hold or cash deposit
The deposit can be a hold on your card or a cash payment. A card hold is not charged unless there is a problem, but it does reduce your available credit. A cash deposit is returned at drop-off once the car passes inspection.
Getting the full deposit back
- Inspect and photograph the car with our staff at pickup.
- Return the car on time and with the agreed fuel level.
- Report any damage or incident to us straight away.
- Keep receipts for any repairs we approved by phone.
If everything matches the pickup report, the deposit is released promptly. Card holds can take some days to disappear, depending on your bank.
Deposits for Chauffeur and Cross-Border Trips
A car hire with driver usually has simpler deposit terms, because our driver remains responsible for the vehicle. Ask us about the details for your booking.
Cross-border trips are different. Taking a car into Uganda, Tanzania or Kenya adds permits and insurance, and the deposit terms may change. Our cross-border car hire page explains the process.
Payments for Companies and NGOs
Organisations often need invoices, quotations and bank transfer details for procurement. We can issue documents in your organisation’s name. For longer contracts, payment schedules can be agreed in advance.

Budgeting Tips for Rwanda Car Rental Payment Options
- Keep enough credit free on your card to cover the deposit hold.
- Carry a mix of payment methods, never just one.
- Budget fuel separately, as most self-drive quotes exclude it.
- Remember park fees are paid to the parks, not to us; the gorilla permit is US$1,500.
- Ask for a written breakdown of every charge before you pay.
