Gisenyi Car Rental: Exploring Rubavu and Lake Kivu

Rubavu, still widely called Gisenyi, is Rwanda’s lakeside resort town on the north shore of Lake Kivu. With a Gisenyi car rental you can treat the town as a base for beaches, hot springs, tea hills and forest day trips, instead of just passing through. Here’s how to get there, what to drive and the best outings within an hour or two of town.

Getting Your Gisenyi Car Rental: Kigali Pickup or Local Delivery

Most visitors collect their vehicle in Kigali and drive west. The trip to Rubavu takes about 3–3.5 hours on a paved road through Musanze. It’s a scenic drive, with volcano views on clear mornings.

Another option is to arrive by bus or with a driver, then use a car only for the days in Rubavu. Delivery to the lakeside is possible by arrangement, so ask about it when you request a quote.

Which way suits you

  • Collect in Kigali: best if Rubavu is one stop on a longer road trip.
  • Driver to Rubavu, self-drive locally: good if you dislike long drives but want freedom at the lake.
  • Chauffeur throughout: ideal for families who want to relax on the beach, not behind the wheel.

Best Vehicle for Rubavu and Its Surroundings

Rubavu town has paved main streets and an easy lakeside drive. However, the best day trips climb into hills on dirt and gravel roads. So match the car to your plans.

A compact SUV such as the Toyota RAV4 is easy to park along the lakefront. But if you plan muddy back roads, a full 4×4 is the safer bet.

Exploring Rubavu Town by Car

Rubavu is relaxed and walkable along the shore. A car is mainly useful for getting between the beach strip, the town centre and the edges of town.

The lakefront and beaches

The public beach and lakeside promenade are the heart of town. Hotels line the shore, and evenings bring locals out for a stroll. Lake Kivu is generally considered safe for swimming, and there are no hippos or crocodiles here.

Rubona and the hot springs

Drive south along the shore road to Rubona, a small fishing port. In the evening you may hear fishermen singing as their wooden boats head out. Nearby, natural hot springs bubble up at the lake edge, and locals use them for bathing.

Parking and fuel

Park in hotel car parks overnight rather than on the street. Fill up in town before any rural day trip, because fuel stations thin out quickly in the hills.

Day Trips from Rubavu with Your Rental

This is where having your own wheels really pays off. Several rewarding outings are within easy reach.

  • Tea estate visit: green tea plantations cover the hills near town. A short drive takes you through neat rows of bushes with lake views.
  • Gishwati-Mukura National Park: one of Rwanda’s newer parks, home to chimpanzees and primates. Access involves rural roads, so a 4×4 helps.
  • Musanze and Volcanoes: about 1.5 hours away. Easy for a gorilla trek if your permit allows an early start.
  • Kivu shoreline south: drive towards Karongi for lake views and quiet villages.

If you’re combining gorillas with Lake Kivu, read our Volcanoes National Park guide first. The gorilla permit is US$1,500 and must be booked ahead.

A Simple Three-Day Rubavu Plan

Not sure how to split your time? This easy plan mixes lake time with short drives, so nobody spends the whole holiday in the car.

Day one: arrive and unwind

Drive from Kigali in the morning and check in by lunch. Spend the afternoon on the beach or the promenade. Later, watch the sunset over the lake from your hotel terrace.

Day two: shore road and boats

Head south to Rubona and the hot springs. Arrange a boat trip from the port to the nearby islands, where you can picnic and swim. Return to town before dark, because the shore road is narrow and busy in the evening.

Day three: hills or forest

Choose between a tea estate morning and a Gishwati forest outing. Both get you into the green hills above the lake. After that, either drive on to Musanze or start the return to Kigali.

The DRC Border at Rubavu

Rubavu sits right next to Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two crossings link the towns, and you’ll see heavy foot and trade traffic.

Don’t drive a rental car across without arranging it first. Cross-border travel needs written authorisation and the right papers, prepared before you leave Kigali. Also check current travel advice for eastern DRC, which changes often. Our cross-border car hire page explains the process.

Driving Tips Around Lake Kivu

Rwanda drives on the right, and the main roads into Rubavu are good. Still, local conditions call for care.

  • Watch for cyclists carrying heavy loads down steep hills.
  • Slow down in villages, where children and goats share the road.
  • Expect afternoon showers in the wet seasons, which make dirt roads slippery.
  • Avoid driving hill roads after dark, as lighting is poor.

Speed cameras operate on main highways, so stick to posted limits on the drive from Kigali.

Gisenyi Car Rental FAQs

How long is the drive from Kigali to Gisenyi?

About 3–3.5 hours on paved roads via Musanze. Leave in the morning to enjoy the views in daylight.

Do I need a 4×4 in Rubavu?

Not for the town and lakefront. However, a 4×4 is better for Gishwati, hill villages and rainy-season back roads.

Can I drive my rental into Goma?

Only with prior written permission and proper cross-border papers. Check travel advisories before planning it.

Is Rubavu a good base for gorilla trekking?

It can work, since Volcanoes is about 1.5 hours away. Most trekkers still prefer a night in Musanze or Kinigi.
