Kibuye, now officially called Karongi, sits on a series of green peninsulas halfway up Lake Kivu’s Rwandan shore. It is quieter than Rubavu, with islands just offshore and hills that drop straight into the water. With Kibuye car hire you can link it to the rest of the lake by road and stop wherever a viewpoint catches your eye.
Getting From Kigali to Kibuye by Car
The road from Kigali to Karongi is paved all the way. Expect roughly 2.5 to 3 hours without long stops. You head west through Muhanga, then climb and descend a long chain of hills before the lake appears below you.
What the drive is like
- Good tarmac, but many tight bends and steep gradients
- Slow trucks on the climbs, so overtake only with a clear view
- Busy roadside villages where children, bicycles and goats share the verge
- Fuel stations in Kigali, Muhanga and Karongi town
Leave Kigali by mid-morning and you can reach the lake for a late lunch. Avoid the final descent after dark, because the bends are sharper than they look on a map.
Choosing the Right Vehicle for Kibuye Car Hire
On paved roads, you do not strictly need a heavy 4×4 to reach Kibuye. However, the side roads to hotels, viewpoints and fishing villages are often steep gravel. Your choice depends on what else is in the plan.
| Vehicle | Best for |
|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 | Couples, paved roads and short gravel stretches; easy to park in town |
| Land Cruiser Prado | Families, the full lakeshore drive and rainy-season side roads |
| Land Cruiser Safari | Combining the lake with Nyungwe, Volcanoes or Akagera on one trip |
If Kibuye is one stop on a longer circuit, pick the vehicle that suits the roughest leg of the whole route, not just the lake.

Three Scenic Routes Around Lake Kivu
Kibuye sits in the middle of the lake, so it makes a natural base for driving north or south. Each direction has a very different feel.
North to Rubavu on the Congo Nile road
The road from Karongi to Rubavu follows the shoreline through tea slopes, banana groves and small bays. It is now largely paved, yet it twists constantly, so allow a full morning. Stop at the hilltop viewpoints for wide lake panoramas, then finish with a swim at Rubavu’s sandy beaches.
South to Nyamasheke and Rusizi
Heading south, the road winds past coffee washing stations and quiet fishing villages. The scenery is wilder and there is less traffic. From Rusizi you can continue to Nyungwe Forest, which makes this a natural link between the lake and chimpanzee trekking.
Short loops around Karongi itself
If you only have a day, explore the peninsulas close to town. Several gravel lanes lead to lookout points over the islands. In the late afternoon, the light on the water is at its best.

What to Do in Kibuye Once You Arrive
Kibuye is about slowing down. Still, there is plenty to fill two or three days.
- Island boat trips: local boats visit Napoleon Island, known for its fruit bat colony, and Amahoro (Peace) Island. Agree on the price and route before you leave the shore.
- Evening fishermen: at dusk, trimaran-style boats head out, and their singing carries across the water.
- Swimming and kayaking: Lake Kivu is generally considered free of bilharzia, so many travellers swim from hotel jetties.
- Memorial sites: the Kibuye church memorial and the Bisesero memorial in the hills honour victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Visit respectfully.
Practical Driving Tips for the Western Province
The lake roads reward patient drivers. These tips will keep your trip relaxed.
Plan for slower averages
Distances look short on a map, but bends and villages keep your average speed low. Therefore, plan around hours, not kilometres. Rwanda drives on the right, and speed limits drop sharply in built-up areas.
Watch the weather
Afternoon storms are common, especially from March to May and in October to November. Rain makes gravel side roads greasy and reduces visibility on the hills. Drive the longest legs in the morning when skies are usually clearer.
Fuel and cash
Fill up in Karongi before heading to more remote stretches. Mobile money and cards work in towns, but carry some Rwandan francs for boat trips and small shops.
Where to Stay and Park Your Rental in Kibuye
Accommodation in Karongi ranges from simple guesthouses to lakeside hotels with gardens running down to the water. Many sit on the peninsulas a few kilometres from town, reached by short gravel lanes. Ask your hotel whether it has secure parking before you book, because most visitors arrive by road.
In addition, choose a place with a jetty if you want early-morning boat trips or a swim before breakfast. Camping is another option for self-drivers. If you like the idea, our car rental with camping gear packages include a tent and basic kit. Always confirm the campsite in advance, since informal lakeshore camping is not encouraged.
Combining Kibuye With the Rest of Rwanda
Most visitors include Kibuye in a wider loop. A popular route runs from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park and down to Rubavu. From there, follow the lake to Kibuye, then go south to Nyungwe before returning to Kigali. That circuit needs at least a week to enjoy without rushing.
