Rwamagana sits on the main road east of Kigali, and it’s the natural base for exploring Rwanda’s sunnier, flatter Eastern Province. With a Rwamagana car rental you can reach Lake Muhazi, Akagera National Park and the quiet farming country beyond, all at your own pace. This guide covers the routes, road conditions and day trips that make the east worth a few days.
Why Base Yourself in Rwamagana?
Rwamagana is the administrative centre of Eastern Province and an easy drive from Kigali. It has fuel stations, banks, small supermarkets and simple places to eat. As a result, it works well as a stop for supplies before you head deeper east.
The landscape also changes here. The steep hills of central Rwanda soften into rolling country, with banana groves, lakes and wide valleys. The climate is generally warmer and drier than in the north and west.
Getting there from Kigali
The drive from Kigali to Rwamagana follows the main paved highway east toward Kayonza. Allow around 1–1.5 hours, depending on how long it takes to clear Kigali traffic. The road is busy with lorries heading to Tanzania, so overtake with care.

Day Trips by Road From Rwamagana
Eastern Rwanda rewards slow exploring. Most highlights sit within a short drive of town, so you can return each evening or move on as you like.
Lake Muhazi
This long, narrow lake stretches north of Rwamagana and west toward Kigali. Its shores have a few lakeside resorts, fishing villages and quiet picnic spots. Access roads to the shore are often gravel, and some get muddy after rain.
Lake Mugesera and the southern lakes
South of the highway, a network of smaller lakes and wetlands attracts birdwatchers. The roads here are mostly unpaved and see little traffic. Therefore, carry water, fill up in town and travel in daylight.
Rural markets and farm country
Weekly markets in eastern towns are colourful and busy. Drive slowly through them, as people, bicycles and goats fill the road. Ask before taking photographs of people.
Akagera National Park From Rwamagana
For most visitors, the real draw of the east is Akagera National Park. From Rwamagana, continue east to Kayonza, then turn off toward the park’s main gate. The total drive from Kigali to the gate is about 2.5 hours, so Rwamagana is already roughly halfway.
The last stretch to the gate is gravel, and park tracks range from good to rough. A 4×4 with good ground clearance makes game drives far more comfortable. It also keeps you moving after a heavy rain.
Making the most of a game drive
Leave Rwamagana early to reach the gate soon after it opens. Animals are most active in the cool morning hours. You can self-drive or hire a guide at reception, and park entry fees are set by the park, so check current rates before you go.

Choosing Your Rwamagana Car Rental Vehicle
The right car depends on how far off the main road you plan to go. The eastern highway is excellent tarmac, yet the side roads to lakes and the park are not.
| Your plan | Suggested vehicle |
|---|---|
| Rwamagana town and highway only | Toyota RAV4 |
| Lake Muhazi shores and back roads | RAV4 in dry weather, Prado after rain |
| Akagera game drives | Land Cruiser Safari or Prado |
| Camping by lakes or near the park | Land Cruiser with rooftop tent |
Camping is a lovely way to enjoy the east’s open skies. Our car rental with camping gear package adds a rooftop tent and kit. Always check campsite rules and permissions first.
Collecting the car
Most guests collect their vehicle in Kigali or at the airport, then drive east. Delivery to other towns may be possible, so ask about it and confirm any fee in your quote.
Driving Tips for Eastern Rwanda Roads
- Heavy trucks: the eastern highway is a major freight route. Be patient on climbs.
- Speed cameras: limits drop sharply through towns and trading centres.
- Cyclists: bicycle taxis are common and often carry heavy loads.
- Dust: in the dry season, gravel roads get dusty, so keep windows up and lights on.
- Night driving: avoid it outside towns because of poor lighting.
Going further east
The highway beyond Kayonza leads toward Rusumo and the Tanzania border. Crossing needs advance paperwork from us, and Tanzania drives on the left. Our cross-border car hire page explains the process.
Best Season for an Eastern Road Trip
The east is one of Rwanda’s drier regions, which makes it pleasant for much of the year. Still, the seasons affect both road conditions and wildlife viewing. Plan around them and your trip will run more smoothly.
The long dry season, roughly June to September, is the classic time for Akagera. Grass is shorter, animals gather near water and gravel roads are firm. December to February is another good window.
During the rains of March to May and around November, the countryside turns green and beautiful. However, lake access roads and some park tracks get slippery. Afternoon storms are common, so plan gravel sections for the morning and keep a 4×4 in mind.
A Sample Three-Day Eastern Loop
If you have a few days, this loop shows the best of the east without long drives.
- Day 1: leave Kigali after breakfast, stop in Rwamagana for supplies and spend the afternoon at Lake Muhazi.
- Day 2: drive early to Akagera for a full day of game viewing, staying near the park.
- Day 3: enjoy a morning game drive, then return to Kigali via Kayonza and Rwamagana.
This loop also fits well before or after a gorilla trip in the north. For more ideas, browse our road trips in Rwanda.
