Ruhengeri, now officially called Musanze, is the gateway town for Volcanoes National Park and Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. Getting around here is different from Kigali: early starts, rough feeder roads and trailheads scattered across the foothills. This guide to Ruhengeri car hire explains how to reach the town, how trekking-day transport works, and which vehicle makes life easiest.
Getting from Kigali to Ruhengeri
The drive north takes about 2–2.5 hours on a good paved road. It climbs through terraced hills with wide views, so plan a photo stop or two. Leave Kigali by early afternoon to arrive well before dark.
You have three main options:
- Self-drive: collect your car in Kigali and drive yourself. This gives you full freedom once you arrive.
- Driver-guide: a local driver takes you north and stays with you for trekking days.
- Public bus to Musanze, then a local car: cheaper for the transfer, but you still need transport to the park.
Most gorilla trekkers choose one of the first two. Public transport does not reach Kinigi or the trailheads at the hours you need.

How Ruhengeri Car Hire Works on Trekking Day
Gorilla trekking day follows a set pattern, and your vehicle is part of every step.
- Early start: leave your lodge before dawn to reach the park headquarters at Kinigi for the morning briefing. Check the reporting time on your permit.
- Group assignment: rangers assign you to a gorilla family and introduce your guide.
- Drive to the trailhead: you then drive to the starting point for your group. Some trailheads are close; others are a bumpy ride away on rocky village roads.
- The trek: you hike with your group, while the car stays parked at the trailhead.
- Return: after your hour with the gorillas, you hike back and drive to your lodge.
Because trailhead roads are rough, a high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended. In wet weather, these roads can be slippery and rutted. A permit costs US$1,500, so it is worth having a reliable vehicle to get you there on time.
Where to Stay: Musanze Town or Kinigi?
Your base affects how early you leave and how much you drive.
| Base | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Musanze town | More hotels, restaurants and fuel stations; wider price range | Longer drive to Kinigi in the dark |
| Kinigi area | Minutes from the park office; quiet, scenic lodges | Fewer shops and services; often pricier |
If you stay in town, fill your tank the evening before trekking. In Kinigi, ask your lodge for directions to the park office the night before.
Choosing a Vehicle for Ruhengeri Car Hire
The best vehicle depends on your group and the season.
- Land Cruiser Safari: the most capable choice for rough trailhead roads, with room for up to six and their gear.
- Land Cruiser Prado: comfortable and capable for couples and small families.
- Toyota RAV4: fine for town driving and paved roads, and manageable on trailhead roads in the dry season if you drive carefully.
During the rainy months, March to May and October to November, choose a Land Cruiser or Prado. Mud on the volcanic slopes is slick, and extra clearance helps.
Other Trips Around Ruhengeri
With a car in Musanze, you can fill your non-trekking days easily.
Golden monkey trekking
Treks start from Kinigi too, and the monkeys live in the bamboo zone. It is shorter and cheaper than gorilla trekking.
Twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo
A scenic drive north-east of town leads to these two lakes, framed by volcanoes. The roads are partly unpaved, so a 4×4 helps.
Dian Fossey hike
This hike climbs to the research site and grave of the famous primatologist. Like other treks, it starts with a briefing at Kinigi.
Musanze caves and town walks
The lava caves near town make a good half-day outing. The local market is also worth a wander.
Crossing into Uganda
The Cyanika border post is close to Musanze. It is the quickest route to Mgahinga and southern Bwindi. Cross-border travel needs extra paperwork, so tell us when you book. See Mgahinga and Bwindi for more.
A Sample 3-Day Plan with Your Own Car
Here is how three days in the Volcanoes area can flow when you have a vehicle.
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze
Leave Kigali after lunch and drive north. Check into your lodge, then visit the town market or the lava caves in the late afternoon. Fill the fuel tank and pack your trekking bag for the morning.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Drive to Kinigi before dawn for the briefing, then on to your trailhead. After the trek, return to the lodge for a late lunch and a rest. In the evening, look at your photos over dinner.
Day 3: Twin lakes or golden monkeys
Choose a morning golden monkey trek or a scenic drive to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. After lunch, either head back to Kigali or continue to Lake Kivu, about 1.5 hours away.
Practical Tips for Driving in the Volcanoes Area
- Pack your trekking gear in the car the night before.
- Leave extra time for slow farm traffic and people walking on village roads.
- Mist can roll in fast, especially early morning; use dipped headlights.
- Park only where rangers or guides direct you at trailheads.
- Keep valuables out of sight while you trek.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ruhengeri the same as Musanze?
Yes. Ruhengeri is the old name for the town and district now called Musanze. Many maps and signs still use both names.
Can I do gorilla trekking as a day trip from Kigali?
Yes, but it means leaving Kigali very early, in the dark. Staying a night in Musanze or Kinigi is far more relaxed.
Can I hire a car in Musanze itself?
It is usually easier to collect in Kigali and drive north. However, delivery to Musanze may be possible; ask when you request a quote.
Do I need a 4×4 for golden monkey trekking?
A 4×4 is the safer choice, as trailhead roads are similar to those used for gorilla treks.
