The Kigali to Nyungwe road trip is Rwanda’s longest classic drive, and also one of its most rewarding. In about 220 kilometres, you pass royal history, university towns and endless tea terraces before climbing into one of Africa’s oldest mountain rainforests. This guide covers the route, where to stop, the right vehicle and how to plan your days in the forest.
The Route at a Glance
From Kigali, you head south-west on the main paved highway through Muhanga, Nyanza and Huye. After Huye, the road turns west through Nyamagabe and begins its climb into the forest. The same road crosses Nyungwe and continues to Rusizi on Lake Kivu.
Allow 5–6 hours to reach the park, including a couple of short breaks. The road is tarmac all the way, but it twists and climbs steeply after Huye. As a result, average speeds drop, and the last hours feel longer than the map suggests.
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Kigali to Muhanga | Busy main road through rolling hills. |
| Muhanga to Nyanza | Farmland and small towns; good coffee stops. |
| Nyanza to Huye | Easy driving; last large town for fuel and supplies. |
| Huye to Nyungwe | Winding climb, tea estates, then dense forest. |
Worthwhile Stops on the Kigali to Nyungwe Road Trip
Breaking the drive makes it more enjoyable. Besides, the southern route has some of Rwanda’s best cultural sites.
Nyanza: the King’s Palace
The reconstructed royal palace at Nyanza shows how Rwanda’s kings once lived. Its long-horned Inyambo cattle are a highlight. A visit takes about an hour.
Huye: museums and a lunch break
Huye, Rwanda’s university town, is home to the Ethnographic Museum, one of the best in the region. It is also the ideal place for lunch and a full tank of fuel.
Tea country
Between Nyamagabe and the forest edge, bright green tea plantations cover the hills. Pull over safely for photos, as the views are spectacular on clear days.
Choosing a Car for the Drive
The highway itself suits any well-maintained car. However, comfort matters on a 5–6 hour drive, and some lodges sit at the end of steep dirt roads. Mist and heavy rain are also common in the forest.
- Land Cruiser: the most comfortable on long, winding roads and steep lodge tracks.
- Prado: a smooth ride and easier handling for couples.
- RAV4: a sensible budget choice if your lodge has a paved approach.
If you would rather enjoy the views than the bends, consider a driver. Our car hire with driver option is popular for this route. To compare models, see our Land Cruiser Prado page.

Driving Through the Forest Safely
Once inside Nyungwe, the road becomes a narrow ribbon through the trees. It is beautiful, but it needs care.
- Expect sharp bends with limited visibility; keep well to the right.
- Watch for monkeys on the road, especially L’Hoest’s and colobus.
- Use dipped headlights in mist, even during the day.
- Don’t stop on bends; use the marked pull-offs instead.
- Plan to arrive before dark, as the forest road is unlit.
Rain can arrive suddenly at any time of year. So slow down when the surface is wet, and allow extra stopping distance on descents.
What to Do Once You Arrive
Nyungwe rewards at least two nights. That gives you one full day for activities without rushing the drive.
- Canopy walk: a suspended walkway high above the forest at Uwinka.
- Chimpanzee tracking: early-morning treks to find habituated chimps.
- Forest trails: waterfall and ridge hikes for all fitness levels.
- Birdwatching: the forest is famous for its Albertine Rift species.
Activity fees are set by the park authorities and change, so check current rates when you book. More details are on our Nyungwe National Park page.
Sample Itineraries
Three days: Kigali and back
- Day 1: Drive south with stops at Nyanza and Huye; arrive at Nyungwe by late afternoon.
- Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in the morning and the canopy walk after lunch.
- Day 3: Return to Kigali in 5–6 hours.
Five days: forest and lake
Instead of returning the same way, continue west to Rusizi and then north along Lake Kivu to Karongi and Rubavu. From Rubavu, the drive back to Kigali takes about 3–3.5 hours. This loop avoids repeating the road and adds lake scenery. Our 5 days budget chimps and gorillas trip shows a similar idea.
Best Time of Year for the Drive
Nyungwe is a rainforest, so it rains here more than anywhere else in Rwanda. Even so, the drier months, roughly June to August and December to February, bring clearer views over the tea hills and firmer forest trails. Chimpanzees can be harder to find then, as they range further for food.
In the wetter months, the forest is lush and the waterfalls are at their best. On the other hand, mist often hangs over the road in the afternoon. So start early, aim to reach the forest by mid-afternoon and accept that some views will be hidden in cloud.
Practical Tips Before You Leave Kigali
- Fill the tank in Huye; fuel options thin out after that.
- Pack a warm layer, as the forest is cool and damp.
- Download offline maps, because signal drops in the forest.
- Carry snacks and water for the final stretch.
- Book lodges and activities in advance, especially in the dry seasons.
